Abbeyville - TN004-022001 - Latin Inscription

Lackeen Castle is an important site in Irish history. An O'Kennedy stronghold (Smyth 1985, 118) of sixteenth-century date which belonged to Brian Ua Cinneide Fionn, Chieftain of Ormond who died in 1588 (Harbison 1970, 230). Described in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as an 'old ruined castle & bawne of Leackeene the walls onely standing an orchard and garden' (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 315). Donogh Kenedy is listed as proprietor in 1640 (ibid.) The Stowe Missal was held at this site at one time. An Irish illuminated manuscript written mainly in Latin with some Gaelic in the late eighth or early ninth century, probably after 792. In the mid-11th century it was annotated and some pages rewritten at Lorrha Monastery in County Tipperary, Ireland. Also known as the Lorrha Missal. This medieval grafithi appears to show the name of Dermot Kenneddy, who returned to the site after being expelled by the English. The carving inlcudes Kennedys name and the date 1651 or 7. Castle of Los Vélez inscription (Mula, Murcia)

Mula castle was built on the 16th century remains of a medieval Islamic castle. The castle is the work of Pedro Fajardo y Chacón, I Marqués de Los Vélez, who showed his power to the town of Mula by building it. However, in order to build it, it was necessary to deceive the king, since at that time Spanish nobles were prohibited from building new fortresses. This inscription, written in Latin, affirms that the Marques de Los Vélez rebuilt a previous fortress from Roman times that had been built by the Roman emperor Antonino Augusto Pio. Archeology has shown this is completely false, as there are no Roman remains here. The full text of the inscription is as follows: Marchio Petrus Fagiardus Primus hanc turrin erexit, marcentenque arcem olim ab Antinino Augusto Pio structam reaedificavit, inmperante Carolo Caesare IIIII. Hispaniarum Rege domino suo. 3D model made using 47 images processed in Reality Capture. Additional processing was completed in Geomagic Wrap, InstantMeshes, Substance Designer, and Blender. Penzance Market Cross - Enhanced inscriptions

Penzance Market Cross could date from the 11th century. It has been moved many times, and has suffered much damage along the way. In this 3D scan, the texture of the stone has been removed and enhanced, revealing the detail of the decorations, inscriptions and damage. There has been much discussion in the past over the meaning of the inscriptions and decorations, notably from R. A. S. Macalister and Prof Charles Thomas. The Celtic Inscribed Stones Project draws together what was known about the stone until the late 1990s: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/archaeology/cisp/database/stone/pnzan_1.html The cross now lays permanently outside Penlee House Gallery and Museum in Penzance. The geometry has been decimated to allow sharing here. If you download and us the data, please credit Tom Goskar and link here, as per the Creative Commons licence. There are hints of letters and decorations yet to be recorded, and there is much to be done on understanding this enigmatic stone. Please let me know of any new readings.
