Biochemical health profile of workers occupationally exposed to printing press inks in KP, Pakistan
<p><b>Background</b>: Printing press workers are occupationally exposed to potentially hazardous chemicals and solvents. Present study was designed to determine the biochemical health profile of printing press workers.</p> <p><b>Methods:</b> Cross sectional study was performed in 50 printing press (male) workers (Exposed) and 20 Unexposed (male), age matched, individuals, who were not exposed to printing press environment but lived all around the printing press area. Non-fasting blood samples were collected, from both Exposed and Unexposed, for determining full blood counts, lipid profile, Uric acid and Creatinine.</p> <p><b>Results:</b> Mean levels of cholesterol [Mean (SD) mg/dl: 213 (13.0) vs 146 (5.50), P=0.04], triglycerides [Mean (SD) mg/dl: 303 (16.9) vs 196 (7.13), P=0.03] and LDL [Mean (SD) mmol/l: 103 (3.32) vs 42.9 (2.57), P=0.01] were significantly higher in printing press workers than in Unexposed. Additionally, mean total leukocyte count and total lymphocytes, were significantly higher (Mean (SD): 8590 (830) vs. 7100 (542) per cmm, P = 0.04 and 44.8 (2.17) % vs. 33.1 (1.85) % respectively, P = 0.02) while mean neutrophil count was significantly lower (Mean (SD): 46.3 (1.97) % vs. 59.7 (1.88) % respectively, P= 0.03) in printing press workers than in Unexposed.</p> <p><b>Conclusion</b>: Exposure to various chemicals in inks may put printing press workers at risk of poor biochemical profile which is an important risk factor for developing non-communicable diseases.</p>

This is a printing press that was destroyed by fire in the Sanshusha Printing Plant, which was located in Midoshiro-cho, Kanda-ku (present-day Chiyoda Ward) at that time. It is displayed in the "Earthquake Memorial Outdoor Gallery" next to the memorial hall. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Reconstruction Memorial Hall was built in 1931 as an auxiliary facility to the Earthquake Memorial Hall (now the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Memorial Hall) in order to pass on the devastation of the Great Kanto Earthquake to future generations and to permanently commemorate the great work that was done by the public and private sectors to reconstruct Tokyo from the ashes of the disaster. 3D Printing of Strong and Tough Double Network Granular Hydrogels
<p>Many soft natural tissues display a fascinating set of mechanical properties that remains unmatched by manmade counterparts. These unprecedented mechanical properties are achieved through an intricate interplay between the structure and locally varying the composition of these natural tissues. This level of control cannot be achieved in soft synthetic materials. To address this shortcoming, a novel 3D printing approach to fabricate strong and tough soft materials is introduced, namely double network granular hydrogels (DNGHs) made from compartmentalized reagents. This is achieved with an ink composed of microgels that are swollen in a monomer-containing solution; after the ink is additive manufactured, these monomers are converted into a percolating network, resulting in a DNGH. These DNGHs are sufficiently stiff to repetitively support tensile loads up to 1.3 MPa. Moreover, they are more than an order of magnitude tougher than each of the pure polymeric networks they are made from. It is demonstrated that this ink enables printing macroscopic, strong, and tough objects, which can optionally be rendered responsive, with high shape fidelity. The modular and robust fabrication of DNGHs opens up new possibilities to design adaptive, strong, and tough hydrogels that have the potential to advance, for example, soft robotic applications.</p>
Is there a better alternative for Ti-6Al-4V in titanium 3D printing?
<p>Ti-6Al-4V (Ti64) is the 'go-to' alloy for many applications, particularly in aerospace industries. But this alloy is designed for cast and wrought processes like forging and not for 3D printing (additive manufacturing). So, should we just assume Ti64 is still our best option for most applications? -Probably not. In this video I compare two titanium alloys deposited using high-deposition-rate 3D printing (additive manufacturing) - Ti-6Al-4V (Ti64) & Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo-0.1Si (Ti6242) - to answer this question.</p> <p>Original research paper: https://doi.org/10.1007/s11661-022-06811-1 Research credits: A. Ship Lines teaching aid - to be 3D printed
A teaching aid 3D file, to be printed and used for teaching the concept of ship lines. These are standardised lines used to design or record the curvature of a ship hull. This model is a simple double-ended boat shape (of no particular vessel type), with raised edges representing the stations, buttock lines and sheer lines of a hull. This was made for use in teaching maritime archaeologists at Flinder University but has been made freely available for use and download here.
