Each row contains information on species taxonomy, body size and hunting strategy within a single trial.</p> <p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p>Trophic interactions are often deduced from body size differences between predators and potential prey, assuming predators prefer prey smaller than themselves because larger prey are more difficult to subdue. This hypothesis has mainly been confirmed in aquatic ecosystems, but rarely in terrestrial ecosystems, especially in arthropods. Our goal was to validate whether body size ratios can accurately predict trophic interactions in a terrestrial, plant-associated arthropod community. Additionally, we tested whether predator hunting strategy and prey taxonomy could explain possible deviations from this general rule.</p> <p>We collected arthropods from marram grass in coastal dunes and conducted pairwise feeding trials to explicitly test whether two individuals, of the same or different species, would predate each other. From the trial results, we constructed one of the most complete, empirically derived food webs for terrestrial arthropods associated with a single plant species. We contrasted this empirical food web with a theoretical web based on body size ratios, literature and expert knowledge.</p> <p>In our feeding trials, predator-prey interactions were indeed largely size-based. Moreover, the theoretical food web based on body size, activity period, microhabitat and expert knowledge converged quite well with the food web based on experimental feeding trials for both predator and prey species. However, predator hunting strategy, but mainly prey taxonomy improved predictions of predation events. Well-defended taxa, such as hard-bodied beetles, were less frequently consumed than expected based on their body size.</p> <p>Body size ratios predict trophic interactions among plant-associated arthropods fairly well. However, traits such as hunting strategy and anti-predator defences can explain why certain trophic interactions do not adhere to size-based rules. Feeding trials can generate insights into multiple traits underlying real-life trophic interactions among arthropods. Such insights are much needed as the dramatic global decline in arthropod species richness and abundance is knocking out many trophic interactions on which services such as pest control and nutrient cycling depend.</p>

Patient-specific induced pluripotent stem cell properties implicate Ca2+-homeostasis in clinical arrhythmia associated with combined heterozygous RYR2 and SCN10A variants
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>We illustrate the use of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) as platforms for investigating cardiomyocyte phenotypes in a human family pedigree exemplified by novel heterozygous RYR2-A1855D and SCN10A-Q1362H variants occurring alone and in combination. The proband, a four-month-old boy, presented with </span><span>polymorphic</span><span> ventricular tachycardia (</span><span>P</span><span>VT). Genetic tests revealed double novel heterozygous RYR2-A1855D and SCN10A-Q1362H variants inherited from his father (F) and mother (M) respectively. His father showed ventricular premature beats (VPB); his mother was asymptomatic. Molecular biological characterisations demonstrated greater <em>TNNT2</em> mRNA expression in the iPSCs-induced cardiomyocytes (iPS-CMs) than in the iPSCs</span><span>.</span><span> </span><span>c</span><span>TNTs became progressively organised, but cytoplasmic RYR2 and SCN10A aggregations occurred in the iPS-CMs. Proband-specific iPS-CMs showed decreased <em>RYR2</em> and <em>SCN10A</em> mRNA expression. The RYR2-A1855D variant resulted in premature spontaneous sarcoplasmic reticular (SR) Ca<sup>2+</sup> transients (PCTs), Ca<sup>2+</sup> oscillations (COs), and increased action potential durations (APDs). SCN10A-Q1362H did not confer any specific phenotype. However, the </span><span>combined </span><span>heterozygous RYR2-A1855D and SCN10A-Q1362H variants in the proband iPS-CMs resulted in accentuated Ca<sup>2+</sup> homeostasis disorders, AP prolongation and susceptibility to early afterdepolarisations (EADs) at high stimulus frequencies. These findings attribute the clinical phenotype in the proband to effects of the heterozygous <em>RYR2</em> variant exacerbated by heterozygous <em>SCN10A</em> modification. </span></p>

Acetone can be used to extract lipophilic from natural fibre surfaces and as a solvent for surface modification of fibres. For instance, the cellulose acetate/acetone solution can be used for interfacial toughening of flax-epoxy composites:<br> https://doi.org/10.1016/j.compositesa.2021.106628</p> <p>However, it is essential to minimise the dip-coating time of the fabrics in acetone, to e.g., 5 seconds. Physico-chemical properties of the top 120 m of two ice cores in Dronning Maud Land (East Antarctica)
<p>We provide in this dataset the complete records from the top 120 m of two ice cores drilled on two adjacent ice rises (Hammarryggen and Lokeryggen, ~100 km apart) located in coastal Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica. Density, water stable isotopes (δ<sup>18</sup>O, δD and d-excess), ions concentrations (Na<sup>+</sup>, K<sup>+</sup>, Mg<sup>+</sup>, Ca<sup>+</sup>, MSA, Cl<sup>-</sup>, SO<sub>4</sub><sup>2-</sup> and NO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup>), and continuous electrical conductivity measurement (ECM) records, as well as age models and resulting surface mass balance (SMB) are presented here. These ice cores are dated back to the end of the eighteenth century (CE 1793 ± 3 years for FK17and 1780 ± 5 years for TIR18) by manual and automatic multivariable layer counting and volcanic tie points validation. The SMB is calculated after correction for vertical strain rates.</p> <p>A detailed description of the measurement procedures, data treatments and uncertainties can be found in: Wauthy S., Tison, J.-L., Inoue, M., El Amri, S., Sun, S., Claeys, P., and Pattyn, F.: Physico-chemical properties of the top 120 m of two ice cores in Dronning Maud Land (East Antarctica): an open window on spatial and temporal regional variability of environmental proxies, submitted to Earth System Science Data (ESSD).</p> <p>These new records can be compared to those from other coastal ice cores in DML and to regional or global model results, and represent a great opportunity for further studies addressing the mechanisms behind SMB spatial and temporal variability in East Antarctica.</p> <p>The study was funded in the framework of the Mass2Ant project, contract n° BR/165/A2 by the Belgian Science Policy BELSPO.</p>

Valgarður: A Database of the Petrophysical, Mineralogical, and Chemical Properties of Icelandic Rocks
<p>PLEASE NOTE: There was an issue with some of the total porosity data in a previous version of the database (the decimal place was shifted). Please use this version of the database. Please contact samuelwarrenscott--at--gmail.com if there are any questions. </p> <p>The <em>Valgarður </em>database is a compilation of data describing the physical and geochemical properties of Icelandic rocks. The dataset comprises 1072 samples obtained from fossil and active geothermal systems, as well as relatively fresh volcanic rocks erupted in sub-aerial or sub-aqueous environments. The database includes petrophysical properties (effective and total porosity, grain density, permeability, electrical resistivity, acoustic velocities), as well as mineralogical and geochemical data obtained by point-counting, X-ray Fluorescence (XRF), quantitative X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC) analyses. The motivation behind this database is threefold: (i) aid in the interpretation of geophysical data including uncertainty estimations, (ii) facilitate the parameterization of numerical reservoir models, and (iii) improve our understanding of the relationship between rock type, hydrothermal alteration and petrophysical properties.</p>
Effects of powdered cactus pear pruning amendment on the physical and hydraulic properties of two contrasting Mediterranean soils
<p>Full database.</p> <p>A production and consumption paradigm known as "circular economy" (CE) emphasizes sharing, renting, reusing, repairing, refurbishing, and, in particular, recycling materials as much as feasible. Traditional agriculture relied totally on the CE, progressively the search for maximization of yields has produced more and more by-products. Their recovery and reuse are possible with approaches that refer to the CE, for example, with the use of pruning biomasses. The cultivation of the cactus pear annually produces large quantities of pruning residues, which have been shown to be useful for the recovery and reuse of nutrients. This study investigates the hydraulic properties of benchmark soils in which this by-product is incorporated. Here we show that the amendment with powdered cactus pear pruning waste (PCPPW) positively affects soil water retention. However, observable benefits require very high amendment proportions, more than 20% by volume. These quantities make use in the open field unrealistic but offer perspectives in the horticultural and floricultural sectors. These results reveal agreement in direct comparison to what was thought to be the case previously, i.e., a decrease in soil bulk density, an increase in plant available water capacity and an increase in soil swelling. A few per cent application of PCPPW improves the drainable water capacity only in the case of not very clayey soils, where their use becomes useless. The principles of the CE are important, but they must not be pursued a priori. For example, in the use of soil amendments, the behavior in the different soils conditions the suitability of their use.</p>
