Locating a National Collection - Schools survey and interview

<p>Questions posed as part of a&nbsp;survey of schools (teachers and pupils) conducted by Locating a National Collection and funded by the AHRC.</p> <p>The survey consisted of a series of questions to be completed anonymously online via&nbsp;Google Forms by teachers and pupils in response to an invitation on&nbsp;the Historical Association website. The survey was intended to take around&nbsp;around 15&nbsp;minutes. The survey aimed to investigate attitudes and behaviours in two areas: history/cultural heritage and digital technologies, with a clear focus on location and eliciting responses to both class room and out of school behaviours. Teachers were invited to participate in a&nbsp;follow-up interview&nbsp;posing more indepth questions about engagement with heritage in teaching, use of sources, use of technology and ways of improving accessibility for schools and their understanding of history.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>The research has been led by Historic Royal Palaces&nbsp;in collaboration with the British Library and the National Trust.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Odor cueing during sleep improves consolidation of a history lesson in a school setting

<p>Sleep is a key factor in memory consolidation. During sleep, information is reactivated, transferred, and redistributed to neocortical areas, thus favoring memory consolidation and integration. Although these reactivations occur spontaneously, they can also be induced using external cues, such as sound or odor cues, linked to the acquired information. Hence, targeted memory reactivation during sleep represents an advantageous tool for improving memory consolidation in real-life settings. In this study, our goal was to improve the consolidation of complex information such as that of a history lesson, using a school study session in the presence of an odor, and a reactivation round while sleeping at home on the same night of the acquisition, without using additional study sessions. We found that complex information can be associated with an odor in the classroom and that one session of reactivation during the first night of sleep in the students&rsquo; houses improves its consolidation. These results bring new evidence for the implementation of reactivation during sleep in real-life settings.</p>

Data from: Validity of bioelectrical impedance analysis in predicting total body water and adiposity among Senegalese school-aged children

Introduction: Childhood obesity is currently a serious public health challenge in developing countries. Therefore, an accurate assessment of adiposity is required. The objective of this study was to validate BIA prediction equations for the assessment of total body water and adiposity or percentage of body fat for the first time in Senegalese school-aged children. Methods: One-hundred-fifty-one (151) pupils who were 8-11 years old were randomly selected from four public schools in Dakar. The body composition measured by deuterium dilution method (DDM) was used as the reference method and compared to that predicted by BIA using a multi-frequency analyser. Stepwise backward multiple linear regression was performed to calculate TBW and %BF in a subsample, which were then validated it in the rest of the sample. The Bland and Altman approach was used to assess the agreement between the two methods (bias and limits of agreement). Results: FFM was higher in boys (24.6±6.9 kg) compared to girls (21.2±3.3 kg; P&lt;0.001), and %BF was lower in boys (5.1±4.6 kg) compared to girls (5.3±3.8 kg; P&lt;0.05). Overall, 11.3% of children were obese (%BF ≥25% in boys, and ≥30% in girls) and 4.6% were overweight/obese according to their BMI-z score (&gt;+1). The equations developed were as follows: TBW=0.376(Height²/Z50)-0.470 (sex) +0.076(weight) +0.065(height)-2.28. %BF= -1.10(height²/Z50) +3.14(sex)+1.57(weight)-4.347. These specific equations showed good precision and a low and non-significant mean bias (0.11 kg, P=0.279; and 0.19 kg, P=0.764) for TBW and %BF, respectively. Conclusion: The newly developed equations can be used as an accurate and alternative tool for screening for obesity among African school-aged children in various settings

Going to School at Better Schools can Improve Children's Health: The Health benefits of the 2009 Right to Education Act in India

<p>This work demonstrates the unintended benefits to health that can result from school policy. We evaluate the impact of a large education reform (Right to Education Act, 2009) in India on children&rsquo;s health, measured as height-for-age z-scores. Using data from the India Human Development Surveys, we employ a difference-in-differences approach that exploits differential timing in the adoption of the reform across states. We find positive health effects due to the reform with larger impacts in states that adopted it earlier. The benefits do not differ across boys and girls but is larger for children from lower castes, and those who live farther from school. Our findings are robust to multiple robustness checks, including a regression discontinuity design that uses children&rsquo;s birth-year as a source of variation for their potential exposure to the mandates of the Right to Education Act.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

She is an interdisciplinary researcher focusing on using informatics, data science, machine learning, and digital information systems to solve real-world healthcare challenges. She is the academic lead of a large collaborative project of Improving the Quality of Healthcare through an Integrated Clinical Pathway Management Approach and Cloud based Digital Data Integration Platform, which was awarded ESRC O2RB Excellence in Impact Award in 2018 for her research impact on healthcare quality improvement. She is the academic lead of machine learning based decision support system for outpatient management which has successfully been implemented in Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust and has received Research Engagement and Impact award in 2020. Swimming and schooling data of golden shiners in variable water temperatures

<p>Temperature is highly influential on the physiology and behaviour of ectotherms. In fish, temperature affects social interactions such as schooling behaviour, a common defence against predation. However, the effect of temperature on the ability of schooling fish to collectively respond to a predator is unknown. Here we used a loom stimulus to simulate an approaching predator that elicited a fleeing response in schooling fish over a range of water temperatures (9-29°C) and group sizes (1-16 fish). While speed and acceleration always exhibited a positive curvilinear response to temperature, the optimal temperature at which performance peaked was different during the predation threat versus when they were unperturbed. Similarly, group-level metrics were sensitive to temperature immediately after a loom stimulus but showed no response to temperature during unperturbed swimming. The time taken for fish to respond to the loom stimulus was minimal at 20°C. The proportion of fish that startled, during a loom, peaked at 13°C – around the same temperature at which speed and acceleration were maximum. Taken together, our results suggest that ectothermic fish may be able to compensate for their slower swim speeds at lower temperatures during unperturbed swimming by increasing their sensitivity to startle in response to a predation threat. More generally, we show that in ectotherms the qualitative and quantitative effect of temperature on a behavioural trait may be dependent on the context.</p>
