Trace gas on the Resource Gradient Study at the Kellogg Biological Station, Hickory Corners, MI (2001 to 2003)
Dataset Abstract This study provides a gradient of nitrogen fertilization under rainfed and irrigated conditions. Nitrogen applications range from 0 to 291 kg N/ha . Plots are 5×30 m arranged in each of 4 replicate blocks. The crop rotation (wheat, corn, soybean) follows the pattern of the main site. The study started in 2002 as a rainfed only study on the south end of the main site. In 2005 a new rainfed and irrigated study was started at the south end of the lysimeter field. The original study site was discontinued in 2006. Crop yields, nitrous oxide and soil temperature, moisture and nitrogen data are available for this study. Treatments are numbered as follows: 1 = 0 kg N/ha, 2= 34 kg N/ha, 3= 67 kg N/ha, 4= 101 kg N/ha, 5= 134 kg N/ha, 6= 168 kg N/ha, 7 = 202 kg N/ha, 8= 246 kg N/ha, 9= 291 kg N/ha. original data source http://lter.kbs.msu.edu/datasets/79
Trace gas emissions from alpine tundra soils: Gas concentration data.
Trace gas samples were collected from 3 alpine tundra vegetation community types (dry meadow, moist meadow, wet meadow) on Niwot Ridge during the summer months of 1992 and 1993. In addition, samples were collected from a set of control and nitrogen amended plots in both dry and wet meadow community types. Soil temperatures were measured in conjunction with the trace gas sampling.
Trace Gas Analyzer Data for Cobb Mill Creek in Oyster, VA 2007-2009
A Trace Gas Analyzer (TGA) was used to collect data on fluxes of nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide emanating from a salt marsh in Oyster, VA. This data contains 1/2-hour summaries of the raw data.

Data from: Tectonic evolution of the Tethyan region created the Eurasian extratropical biodiversity hotspots: tracing Pireneitega spiders' diversification history
The withdrawal of the Tethys Sea and the formation of the Alpine-Himalayan orogenic belt profoundly impacted the distribution and composition of terrestrial biota in Eurasia. However, studies that have explicitly addressed the potential links between the series of tectonic activities in the Tethyan region and the formation of extratropical biodiversity hotspots in the Alpine-Himalayan belt are rare. The Pireneitega spiders (Agelenidae) are found throughout Eurasia and show high species richness in these hotspots. Thus, using Pireneitega spiders as a model group, we can shed light on how past tectonic events shaped Eurasian hotspots. To reconstruct the spatial and temporal evolution of Pireneitega spp., an integrative historical biogeographical analysis has been conducted using thousands of novel DNA sequences and five novel transcriptome sequences from different species. Species distribution modelling based on complete geographical distribution information was used to assess the ecological preferences and the potential ecological interchangeability of Pireneitega species. Our study suggests that the rapid expansion of Pireneitega in Eurasia benefitted from the Tethys Sea regression in the early Oligocene. Most Pireneitega species are distributed allopatrically, but in similar niches. The diversification of Pireneitega species relied on invading numerous new isolated habitats created by the uplift of Alpine-Himalayan mountains during the Miocene (wet valley model). These results imply that the formation of Alpine-Himalayan hotspots was driven by the series of tectonic events in the Tethyan region during the Oligocene–Miocene.

Pulse labelling of deep soil layers in forest with 13CH4: testing a new method for tracing methane in the upper horizons, understorey vegetation and tree stems using laserbased spectrometry
<p>Methane is one the main greenhouse gases and upland forests are one of its main biological sinks. However, vegetation could reduce this sink by allowing a direct path for the methane produced in deep soils to escape into the atmosphere. By tracing emissions with <sup>13</sup>CH<sub>4</sub>, we show for the first time that methane emitted by trees in upland forest could have a deep soil origin even though the soil is an overall methane sink. However, we found that the trees and understorey vegetation at our site had only a small impact on the methane budget.</p>

Traces of air and body temperature in six hummingbird species in the Andes
<p>Torpor is thought to be particularly important for small endotherms occupying cold environments and with limited fat reserves to fuel metabolism. It remains mysterious why, among birds, torpor is both rare and variable in extent. We investigated torpor in a hummingbird community at ~3,800 m a.s.l. in the tropical Andes by monitoring body temperature (<i>T</i><sub>b</sub>) in 26 individuals of six species held captive overnight and experiencing natural air temperature (<i>T</i><sub>a</sub>) patterns. All species used pronounced torpor, with one <i>Metallura phoebe</i> reaching a minimum <i>T</i><sub>b</sub> of 3.26 °C, the lowest value yet reported for any bird or non-hibernating mammal. The extent and duration of nocturnal torpor varied among species, with overnight body mass (<i>M</i><sub>b</sub>) loss negatively correlated with both minimum <i>T</i><sub>b</sub> and bout duration. We found a significant phylogenetic signal for minimum <i>T</i><sub>b</sub> and overnight <i>M</i><sub>b</sub> loss, consistent with evolutionarily conserved thermoregulatory traits. Our findings suggest deep torpor is routine for high Andean hummingbirds, but evolved species differences affect its depth.</p>
National Grid frequency trace
<p>The attached dataset provides the GB grid frequency every second for two hours (02.00-04.00) on 1 September 2015 (at some location that I do not remember). I used it to test some linear stochastic process models for the frequency as a function of time. On the 2-hour timescale the trace fit reasonably well to an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU) process with a decay time of around 30 minutes. On a shorter timescale, in particular the first 3 minutes 20 seconds, the trace looked smooth so I fitted it to a first-order filtered OU process, which gave me time constants of 11 minutes and 1.9 seconds. This was important evidence that a useful model for power imbalance as a function of time is a filtered white noise. Furthermore, the power spectrum of the 2-hour trace showed a regime with slope around -4 for periods shorter than 25 seconds, consistent with being a first-order filtered OU process, until the Nyquist cutoff at 2 seconds.</p>
Data from: Paleolimnological assessment of wildfire-derived atmospheric deposition of trace metal(loid)s and major ions to subarctic lakes (Northwest Territories, Canada)
<p>Wildfires release terrestrial elements to the atmosphere as aerosols, and these events are becoming more frequent and intense in the Arctic boreal forest as the climate is warming. We quantified the impact of atmospheric deposition of aerosols from local wildfires on metal(loid) fluxes using macroscopic charcoal accumulation rates, historical fire mapping, and element concentrations in <sup>210</sup>Pb‐dated lake sediment from five subarctic lakes with small catchments. Lake sediments showed small but significant increases in fluxes (median = 5–10%) for 22 trace metals, metalloids, or major ions following fire events. The impact of wildfire aerosols on element fluxes was mostly due to short‐term (≤2 years) increasing sedimentation rate (6 ± 41% increase), whereas sediment element concentrations were not strongly impacted. Wildfire‐associated deposition to lake sediments was mainly composed of Ca, Al, Fe, Mg, K, Mn, and Na, which are major constituents of ash from burned biomass, but changes in sediment flux were greatest for Sb, As, Ni, Ba, Mn, Mo, and Sr compared to pre‐disturbance conditions. Compared to anthropogenic sources of pollution, wildfire‐associated atmospheric fluxes of metal contaminants to the lakes (e.g., Hg, Pb, As, Sb, and Cd) were low. This study provides quantitative estimates of wildfire impacts on atmospheric geochemical fluxes to subarctic lakes, which can be used for modeling larger‐scale impacts under changing fire regimes.</p>
