Hydrochemistry of the Leverett Glacier proglacial river, Southwest Greenland (2009-2012)
<p>This dataset describes the dissolved major ion (Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, Na+, Cl-, SO4 2-), nutrient (NO3-, NH4+, PO4 3-, DSi, TDN) and organic carbon (DOC) concentrations in the proglacial rivers of the Leverett Glacier (LG) in Southwest Greenland for the 2009, 2010 and 2012 melt seasons. The data have already been part of 3 different publications (Lawson et al. 2014, Hawkings et al. 2015, Wadham et al. 2016) but are archived here for the first time.</p> <p>For similar data at LG and/or Kiattut Sermia (South Greenland) for the 2015 and 2013 melt seasons, respectively, see Hatton et al. 2018 (see 'related identifiers').</p>

Data from: Seasonality in the equatorial tropics: Flower, fruit and leaf phenology of montane trees in the highlands of southwest Uganda
<p>Phenology influences many forest functions and can inform forest conservation and management, yet representative phenological data for most common tropical forest tree species remain sparse or absent. Between June 2011 and December 2013, we investigated flowering, fruiting and leafing patterns in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a montane forest located near the equator in Uganda, drawing on 16,410 observations of 530 trees of 54 species located between 2,066 and 2,527 m in elevation. The park's climate is equatorial with two wet and dry seasons each year. Flowering and fruiting were strongly seasonal while patterns in leafing were less pronounced. Flower occurrence peaked at the beginning of the short dry season followed by a pronounced trough during the beginning and the middle of the short wet season. Fruit occurrence had a pronounced peak during high rainfall months in March through April with most fruits ripening during drier months in May through July. Fruit scarcity was observed for a 4-month period spanning September to December and most flushing of leaves noted at the end of the wet season in November and December. Our binomial generalised linear mixed models (GLMM) indicated that flowering and fruiting were negatively associated with temperature and that leafing activity was positively associated with rainfall and temperature. These findings are consistent with the insolation- and water-limitation hypotheses suggesting that the seasonally varying availability of resources such as light, water and nutrients determines these phenological patterns. Ideally, prolonged, multi-year community-level studies would be supported so as to better characterise the influence of climate and of climate variability.</p>

Sunda-Sahul floristic exchange and pathways into the Southwest Pacific: New insights from wet tropical forest trees
<p><strong>Aim</strong> Recent investigations on the floristic exchange between Southeast Asia and Australia have shown a clear dispersal directionality bias (West to East) of wet-adapted plant taxa. However, dispersal routes and directions of wet forest taxa into the South Pacific remain insufficiently known. We here aimed to establish the most likely routes and directions of plant dispersal into the Southwest Pacific islands.</p> <p><strong>Location</strong> Southeast Asia, East Asia, Australia, Southwest Pacific.</p> <p><strong>Taxon</strong> <em>Dysoxylum</em> s.l. (Meliaceae). This includes <em>Dysoxylum</em> s.s., <em>Didymocheton</em>, <em>Epicharis</em>, <em>Goniocheton</em>, <em>Pseudocarapa</em> and <em>Prasoxylon</em>.</p> <p><strong>Method</strong> We sampled 75% of the species diversity in <em>Dysoxylum</em> s.l., covering the entire distribution range, all genera and major lineages. Phylogenetic relationships of 149 accessions were reconstructed using Bayesian Evolutionary Analysis and two internal constraints. The dispersal–extinction–cladogenesis variant, founder-event speciation (DEC+J), was used for reconstructing the biogeographic history, and 100 BSMs were simulated.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong> <em>Dysoxylum</em> s.l. originated and firstly diversified in the western part of its current distribution range (incl. Indochina) during the Miocene to Pliocene, followed by an overall eastern range expansion towards Malesia, Australia and the Southwest Pacific in the Pliocene.</p> <p><strong>Main</strong> <strong>conclusions</strong> The south-eastward expansion of lineages into Wallacea and Australia is in temporal agreement with the convergence of the Asian and Australian tectonic plates since the Miocene. Long-distance dispersal is the main mechanism that led to the current distribution. Two dispersal pathways into the Southwest Pacific are identified, (1) through New Guinea and the Solomon Islands to Fiji, and (2) from New Zealand to Fiji. For both routes, Fiji was an important secondary source area for dispersal into the Southwest Pacific.</p>
Sea-Level Rise in Southwest Greenland as a Contributor to Viking Abandonment
<p>Data and code to accompany the journal publication "Sea-Level Rise in Southwest Greenland as a Contributor to Viking Abandonment" in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS). This dataset includes data sets, computer codes and associated scripts, necessary to reproduce results in the article: (1) the surface computational grid; (2) model Greenland Ice Sheet history in time steps of 20 years from 1000 CE to present-day; (3) code to compute the relative sea-level change at any user specified set of sites across the same time steps; (4) code to map (2) and (3) on to conventional grids (e.g., latitude-longitude; Gauss-Legendre, etc.) based on a non-linear interpolation of data on a triangular grid via a second-order scheme; (5) code to convert sea level changes into time series of past topography from which flooding geometry (i.e., shoreline migration) can be tracked; and (6) code to integrate the flood geometries in (5) to compute time series of total flood area. Elevation and phylogeny shape herbaceous seed dormancy in a biodiversity hotspot of southwest China
<p><span>Seed dormancy contributes greatly to successful establishment and community stability and shows large variation over a continuous status scale in mountain ecosystems. Although empirical studies have shown that seed dormancy status (SDS) is shaped by elevation and phylogenetic history in mountain ecosystems, few studies have quantified their combined effects on SDS. Here, we collected mature seeds from 51 populations of 11 <em>Impatiens</em> species (Balsaminaceae) along an elevational gradient in the Gaoligong Mountains of southwest China and estimated SDS using mean dormancy percentage of fresh seeds germinated at three constant temperatures (15, 20, and 25 °C). We downloaded 19 bioclimatic variables from WorldClim v.2.1 for each <em>Impatiens</em> population and used internal transcribed spacer (ITS), atpB-rbcL, and trnL-F molecular sequences from the GenBank nucleotide database to construct a phylogenetic tree of the 11 species of <em>Impatiens</em>. Logistic regression model analysis was performed to quantify the effects of phylogeny and environment on SDS. Results identified a significant phylogenetic SDS signal in the <em>Impatiens</em> species. Furthermore, elevation and phylogeny accounted for 63.629% of the total variation in SDS among the <em>Impatiens</em> populations. The best logistic model indicated that temperature was the main factor influencing variation in SDS among the <em>Impatiens</em> species, and model residuals were significantly correlated with phylogeny, but not with elevation. Our results indicated that seed dormancy is phylogenetically conserved, and climate drives elevational patterns of SDS variation in mountain ecosystems. This study provides new insights into the response of seed plant diversity to climate change.</span></p>
Estimated mortality of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) pandemic on Northern gannets (Morus bassanus) in southwest Ireland
<p><span>The 2022 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) outbreak that occurred in 2022 in many European countries affected several seabird species. Among them, Northern gannets (<em>Morus</em> <em>bassanus</em>), were particularly impacted. We conducted aerial surveys in waters around the two largest gannet colonies in Ireland (Little Skellig and Bull Rock, together representing 87% of the national population) in September 2022. During surveys, 184 dead gannets were recorded on survey effort, representing 3.74% of the total number of gannets recorded. We estimated the abundance of dead gannets in the surveyed area at 1,526 (95% CIs 1,299–1,793) individuals. The percentage of dead gannets observed was used to estimate a minimum local population mortality of 3,118 individuals across both colonies. Aerial surveys proved a reliable methodology providing key information on gannet mortality derived from HPAI at sea. The study provides the first estimate of gannet mortality in the two largest gannetries in Ireland.</span></p>

Factors affecting the recovery of Mexican wolves in the Southwest United States
<ol> <li>Recovering and maintaining large carnivore populations is a global conservation challenge that requires better knowledge of the factors affecting their populations, particularly in shared landscapes (i.e., non-protected areas where people occupy and or utilize the land).</li> <li>The Mexican wolf (<em>Canis</em> <em>lupus</em> <em>baileyi</em>) is an endangered wolf subspecies being recovered on shared landscapes in the Southwest United States and Mexico. We used data from the U.S. program to model population growth, evaluate the impact of management removal and illegal killing relative to other demographic factors, and test hypotheses about factors influencing rates of management removal and illegal killing.</li> <li>From 1998–2019, the population growth averaged 12% per year. Rates of natural reproduction, illegal killing, and other mortality remained consistent over the 22 years; while releases, translocations, and management removals varied markedly between two time periods, phase 1: 1998–2007 and phase 2: 2008–2019.</li> <li>The number of wolves removed for conflict management was higher during phase 1 (average ~13 per year, rate = 24.8%) than phase 2 (average of ~5 per year, rate = 5.2%). This decrease in management removal resulted in the wolf population resuming growth after a period of population stagnation. Two factors influenced this decrease, a change in policy regarding removal of wolves (stronger modeling support) and a decrease in the number of captive-reared adult wolves released into the wild (weaker modeling support).</li> <li>Illegal mortality was relatively constant across both phases, but after the decrease in management removal, illegal mortality became the most important factor (relative importance shifted from 28.2% to 50.1%). Illegal mortality was positively correlated with rates of reintroduction and translocation of wolves and negatively correlated with the rate of management removal.</li> <li> <em>Synthesis and applications</em>. Using management removal to reduce human-carnivore conflict can have negative population impacts if not used judiciously. Recovering and maintaining carnivore populations in shared landscapes may require greater tolerance of conflict and more emphasis on effective conflict prevention strategies and compensation programs for affected stakeholders.</li> </ol>
