Alt Penedès environmental data collected between 2017 and 2021

<p>The&nbsp;dataset contains different meteorological variables extracted from the website meteo.cat from &quot;el Servei Meteorol&ograve;gic de Catalunya&quot;. Those&nbsp;meteorological variables extracted are recorded daily by the stations located in the Alt Penedes (Font Rub&iacute;, la Granada, Canaletes, Sant Mart&iacute; Sarroca and Sant Sadurn&iacute; d&rsquo;Anoia) between 2017 and 2021.</p> <p>It is important to note that not all stations are prepared to collect the same information, that is, not all are equipped with the same instruments, therefore, there are cases without&nbsp;of the&nbsp;variables reported, e.g. Font Rub&iacute; provides data on average atmospheric pressure&nbsp;while the rest do not. Moreover, not all stations have been installed on the same data, so data may not be available for all the desired time period&nbsp;for some&nbsp;stations. Specifically, the&nbsp;station located in Sant Sadurn&iacute; d&rsquo;Anoia, the data is available from 07/05/2021, the date on which the station was operational.</p>

Data from: Delegation to artificial agents fosters prosocial behaviors in the collective risk dilemma

<p>Home assistant chat-bots, self-driving cars, drones or automated negotiation systems are some of the several examples of autonomous (artificial) agents that have pervaded our society. These agents enable the automation of multiple tasks, saving time and (human) effort. However, their presence in social settings raises the need for a better understanding of their effect on social interactions and how they may be used to enhance cooperation towards the public good, instead of hindering it. To this end, we present an experimental study of human delegation to autonomous agents and hybrid human-agent interactions centered on a non-linear public goods dilemma with uncertain returns in which participants face a collective risk. Our aim is to understand experimentally whether the presence of autonomous agents has a positive or negative impact on social behaviour, equality and cooperation in such a dilemma. Our results show that cooperation and group success increases when participants delegate their actions to an artificial agent that plays on their behalf. Yet, this positive effect is less pronounced when humans interact in hybrid human-agent groups, where we mostly observe that humans in successful hybrid groups make higher contributions earlier in the game. Also, we show that participants wrongly believe that artificial agents will contribute less to the collective effort. In general, our results suggest that delegation to autonomous agents has the potential to work as commitment devices, which prevent both the temptation to deviate to an alternate (less collectively good) course of action, as well as limiting responses based on betrayal aversion.</p>

Six years of wild bee monitoring collections data using Blue Vane traps in Southern Pennsylvania, USA

<p><span><span>Turley NE, Biddinger DJ, Joshi NK, López-Uribe MM. 2022. Six years of wild bee monitoring shows changes in biodiversity within and across years and declines in abundance. Ecology and Evolution.   </span></span></p> <p><span>Wild bees form diverse communities that pollinate plants in both native and agricultural ecosystems making them both ecologically and economically important. The growing evidence of bee declines has sparked increased interest in monitoring bee community and population dynamics using standardized methods. Here, we studied the dynamics of bee biodiversity within and across years by monitoring wild bees adjacent to four apple orchard locations in Southern Pennsylvania, USA. We collected bees using passive Blue Vane traps continuously from April to October for six years (2014-2019) amassing over 26,000 bees representing 144 species. We quantified total abundance, richness, diversity, composition, and phylogenetic structure. There were large seasonal changes in all measures of biodiversity with month explaining an average of 72% of the variation in our models. Changes over time were less dramatic with years explaining an average of 44% of the variation in biodiversity metrics. We found declines in all measures of biodiversity especially in the last 3 years, though additional years of sampling are needed to say if changes over time are part of a larger trend. Analyses of population dynamics</span> <span>over time for the 40 most abundant species indicate that about one third of species showed at least some evidence for declines in abundance. Bee family explained variation in species-level seasonal patterns but we found no consistent family-level patterns in declines, though bumble bees and sweat bees were groups that declined the most. Overall, our results show that season-wide standardized sampling across multiple years can reveal nuanced patterns in bee biodiversity, phenological patterns of bees, and population trends over time of many co-occurring species. These datasets could be used to quantify the relative effects that different aspects of environmental change have on bee communities and to help identify species of conservation concern</span><span>. </span></p>

An inventory of school buildings in Central Sulawesi (Indonesia) developed through a mixed-mode data collection approach

<p>Urban disaster risk management and reduction requires the development and periodic updating of regional building inventories. However, the development of such inventories can be very cost-intensive and time-consuming, making this a challenging task, particularly for low- and middle-income countries.</p> <p>We used a combination of side-walk and remote survey methods to develop an inventory of 2536 school buildings in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. The Central Sulawesi region was affected by the 28th September 2018 Palu earthquake. The moment magnitude (Mw) 7.5 earthquake caused intense ground shaking in the epicentral area, triggering liquefaction, tsunami and major landslides, leading to over 4,000 fatalities and 165,000 displaced people. At least 1299 schools were reported to have been damaged or collapsed, affecting about 184,000 students.</p> <p>The developed inventory includes information on location, number of stories, occupancy characteristics (building use and population), age, type of lateral load resisting systems, building materials, structural vulnerabilities, and structural conditions following the 2018 earthquake.</p> <p>The developed database can be used in pre-event/long-term risk analysis and management, post-event/near-real-time loss estimation, and regional-level decision-making on school assets and related policies. The database has been made available for public use and can be readily harmonised with similar databases for other regions.</p> <p>This data repository also contains information on interviews with 30 school principals in the region. The interview details the damage states and functional recovery trajectory of school buildings in the 30 schools.</p>

Baltic Sea stable isotope ecology meta-data collection

<p>Stable isotope analysis (SIA) has become a pivotal method in food web and ecological research, leading to the establishment of the research field "stable isotope ecology". We conducted the first systematic review of stable isotope studies in this field in the Baltic Sea macro-region (Eglite et al. 2022). The meta-data collection provided here includes the information extracted from all 164 studies identified in the systematic review across various dimensions (topic, space, time, taxonomic, and technical focus), but not primary stable isotope data. The first published version of this meta-data collection represents the status as of July 10, 2021, and was used to filter and extract meta-data to produce the figures and tables in the review by Eglite et al. (2022). The meta-data collection is a resource for both experienced isotope ecologists and newcomers to grasp and access all published Baltic Sea SIA work on any fundamental or applied research topic, sub-region, taxon, or trophic group of interest. It also represents an ideal foundation for an envisioned "Baltic Isobank" database of primary stable isotope data, following the vision outlined in Eglite et al. (2022). We will provide regular updates of the meta-data collection in the Dryad repository, based on new runs of the systematic review query and including any additions of research papers and corrections received from the stable isotope ecology community. For this purpose, we encourage researchers to inform us about newly published research papers employing stable isotopes in the Baltic Sea ecology field by sending an e-mail with the publication reference to baltic-isobank@geomar.de.</p>

Carolina Collective survey data

<p>Despite many innovative ideas generated in response to COVID-19, few studies have examined community preferences for these ideas. Our study aimed to determine university community members' preferences for three novel ideas identified through a crowdsourcing open call at the University of North Carolina (UNC) for making campus safer in the pandemic, as compared to existing (i.e. pre-COVID-19) resources. An online survey was conducted from March 30, 2021 – May 6, 2021. Survey participants included UNC students, staff, faculty, and others. The online survey was distributed using UNC's mass email listserv and research directory, departmental listservs, and student text groups. Collected data included participant demographics, COVID-19 prevention behaviors, preferences for finalist ideas vs. existing resources in three domains (graduate student supports, campus tours, and online learning), and interest in volunteering with finalist teams. In total 437 survey responses were received from 228 (52%) staff, 119 (27%) students, 78 (18%) faculty, and 12 (3%) others. Most participants were older than age 30 years (309; 71%), women (332, 78%), and white (363, 83.1%). Five participants (1%) were gender minorities, 66 (15%) identified as racial/ethnic minorities, and 46 (10%) had a disability. Most participants preferred the finalist idea for a virtual campus tour of UNC's lesser-known history compared to the existing campus tour (52.2% vs. 16.0%). For graduate student supports, 41.4% of participants indicated no preference between the finalist idea and existing supports; for online learning resources, the existing resource was preferred compared to the finalist idea (41.6% vs. 30.4%). Most participants agreed that finalists' ideas would have a positive impact on campus safety during COVID-19 (81.2%, 79.6%, and 79.2% for finalist ideas 1, 2 and 3 respectively). 61 (14.1%) participants indicated interest in volunteering with finalist teams. Together these findings contribute to the development and implementation of community-engaged crowdsourced campus safety interventions during COVID-19.</p>

<p>The dataset for DATA&nbsp;2022 paper &quot;Dataset: An Indoor Smart Traffic Dataset and Data Collection System&quot;</p> <p>This archive contains a traffic light dataset that can be used for traffic light detection/classification. The dataset is collected from an indoor smart traffic testbed.&nbsp;In this testbed, we use fences to simulate the road&#39;s boundaries and use movable toy traffic signs and traffic lights to simulate those in real-world traffic scenes. An F1TENTH vehicle drives along the fence autonomously. Two cameras are mounted on both sides of the vehicle, which capture images of traffic lights and traffic signs on both sides of the track.</p> <p>This dataset contains 3507 images captured by the F1TENTH vehicle. Each image comes with ground truth bounding boxes that enclose the traffic lights and a label indicating the current state of the traffic light, 0 for a green light and 1 for a red light.</p> <p>Please cite our paper if you are using this dataset.</p>

Data from: Orchid trade at the source: Epiphytic species with conspicuous flowers in low-elevation forests are more locally collected in a Philippine key biodiversity area

<p>Orchids are the most heavily traded plant group globally, putting pressure on wild populations in many source countries like the Philippines. Despite its rich orchid diversity, there remains a notable gap in understanding the factors driving orchid trade within the country. To address this knowledge gap and support orchid conservation efforts, we utilized a five-year orchid diversity dataset extensively collected through floristic field and village garden surveys in one of the largest key biodiversity areas in the southern Philippines. We employed a trait-based approach to investigate ecological drivers of local orchid collection within this source area. Our results show that around 36% of local orchid diversity have predicted collection risks of ≥50%. Notably, locally collected orchid species exhibited multiple, large, and conspicuously colored flowers that are found in low-elevation forests and higher up in forest stratum. Elevational distribution and flower size emerged as the strongest predictors, potentially influencing collection preferences. Our analysis of predicted collection risks underscores the vulnerability of both threatened and non-threatened orchid species to local collection pressures. Moreover, we highlight the practical utility of our trait-based approach in predicting risks and informing management strategies for local orchid conservation. This research marks a significant step towards identifying ecological drivers influencing orchid trade at its source, providing insights that can inform targeted conservation strategies across many key biodiversity areas for this highly diverse, charismatic, and threatened plant family.</p>
