You are what your host eats: The trophic structure and food chain length of a symbiont community are coupled with the plastic diet of the host ant

<p>Food chain length provides key information on the flow of nutrients and energy in ecosystems. Variation in food chain length has primarily been explained by environmental drivers such as ecosystem size and productivity. Most insights are obtained from theory or aquatic systems, but the importance of these drivers remains largely untested in terrestrial systems.</p> <p>We exploited red wood ant nests markedly differing in size as natural experiments to quantify the drivers of trophic structure and food chain length of their symbiont arthropod communities. Using stable isotopes, we explored the variation in the trophic positions of four symbiont species with the trophic position of the top predator as a proxy for food chain length of the symbiont community. </p> <p>Nest size did not affect food chain length, nor trophic distance between the symbionts. Instead, food chain length and the trophic positions of the symbionts were strongly affected by the host's foraging decisions. When the host diet shifted from predominantly herbivorous to more predacious, the trophic position of the symbionts and food chain length strongly increased.</p> <p>We show for the first time that a food web can be structured by biotic interactions with an engineering species rather than by abiotic environmental variable</p>

Data from Quantitative Analyses of Coupling in Hybrid Zones

<p>This data set comprises simulated and empirical genetic data and associated metadata that were analyzed for the publication &quot;Quantitative Analyses of Coupling in Hybrid Zones&quot; (doi:10.1101/cshperspect.a041434).</p> <p>The data set includes two compressed directories (tar.gz files).</p> <p>dfuseSims.tar.gz contains the simulated data. These are the main (.main) output files from the program dfuse. The simulation conditions are encoded in the file names, this includes the number of demes (number after d), the number of loci (number after L), theta (number after theta) and the replicate number (number after rep). The genetic map size (M) is given if not 1 and the migration rate (m) is given if not 0.1. The directory includes 2250 simulated data sets.</p> <p>data.tar.gz contains the empirical data sets re-analyzed for this paper. We specifically include the final input files needed for analysis. The file formats vary slightly but are described in detail in the supplemental material for the publication and in the R scripts used for analysis. The latter are available from GitHub (https://github.com/zgompert/ClineCoupling). There is one directory per data set within the main compressed directory.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

PI3K block restores age-dependent neurovascular coupling defects associated with cerebral small vessel disease

<p class="MsoNormal">Neurovascular coupling (NVC), a vital physiological process that rapidly and precisely directs localized blood flow to the most active regions of the brain, is accomplished in part by the vast network of cerebral capillaries acting as a sensory web capable of detecting increases in neuronal activity and orchestrating the dilation of upstream parenchymal arterioles. Here, we report a <em>Col4a1</em> mutant mouse model of cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD) with age-dependent defects in capillary-to-arteriole dilation, functional hyperemia in the brain, and memory. The fundamental defect in aged mutant animals was the depletion of the minor membrane phospholipid phosphatidylinositol 4,5 bisphosphate (PIP<sub>2</sub>) in brain capillary endothelial cells, leading to the loss of inwardly rectifier K<sup>+</sup> (Kir2.1) channel activity. Blocking phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase (PI3K), an enzyme that diminishes the bioavailability of PIP<sub>2</sub> by converting it to phosphatidylinositol (3,4,5)-trisphosphate (PIP<sub>3</sub>), restored Kir2.1 channel activity, capillary-to-arteriole dilation, and functional hyperemia. In longitudinal studies, chronic PI3K inhibition also improved the memory function of aged <em>Col4a1</em> mutant mice. Our data suggest that PI3K inhibition is a viable therapeutic strategy for treating defective NVC and cognitive impairment associated with cSVD.</p>

Cytoplasmic male sterility and abortive seed traits generated through mitochondrial genome editing coupled with allotopic expression of atp1 in tobacco

<p>Genome editing tools have recently been developed that are capable of generating deletions and/or rearrangements in plant mitochondrial genomes. We utilized custom-designed meganuclease constructs targeting the essential mitochondrial gene <em>atp1</em> in tobacco plants carrying a version of atp1 that had been repurposed to function as a nuclear gene. Leaf extracts enriched in mitochondria from three independent genome editing events were evaluated by PacBio sequencing and analysis. Contigs that display sequence homology to the reference mitochondrial genome BA000042 are deposited here. Some of the contigs correspond to the tobacco mitochondrial genome as expected, while others corresponded to sequences from the nucleus where the ancient transfer of portions of the mitochondrial genome became incorporated into the nuclear genome. Still other contigs correspond to the chloroplast genome, or pieces of the chloroplast genome anciently transferred to the nucleus, as small fragments of the chloroplast genome are interspersed in plant mitochondrial genomes. Analysis of contigs of genuine mitochondrial origin demonstrated that the double-strand breaks imposed by the genome editing enzymes resulted in the deletion of <em>atp1</em> and neighboring sequences, along with rearrangements in overall genome structure.</p>

Data for: Human activity coupled with climate change strengthens the role of lakes as an active pipe of dissolved organic matter

<p>This dataset contains data from an investigation to resolve the relative importance of multiple environmental drivers on the quantity and quality of chromophoric DOM in lakes at the continental scales. The study is described in the paper: "Du Y., Chen F., Zhang Y., He H., Wen S., Huang X., Song C., Li. K., Wang J., Kellings D., and Lu Y. 2023. Human activity coupled with climate change strengthens the role of lakes as an active pipe of dissolved organic matter, Earth's Future, in press". </p> <p>The primary objectives of the study were to (i) quantity the magnitude of environmental drivers modulating lacustrine DOM quantity and quality at a continental scale, including climate, land cover, societal development, and water retention time, and (ii) unravel individual and interactive effects of the environmental drivers.</p> <p>Firstly, we constructed a structural equation model framework that incorporated both direct and indirect pathways.</p> <p>Secondly, we collected a continental-scale dataset of lake DOM quantity and quality, along with the corresponding environmental driver variables from a group of carefully selected lakes (n=182).</p> <p>Lastly, we established structure equation models to analyze DOM quantity and quality variations as a function of the four environmental drivers.</p> <p>The main results include: (1) land cover and societal development both exhibit positive direct effects on lake CDOM quantity, highlighting the significant role of well-vegetated soils and anthropogenic activities as sources of lake DOM on a continental scale. (2) Climate has two strong but opposite effects –a warming and wet climate facilitates soil OM production and export but also enhances CDOM in-lake transformation. (3) Three proxies are proposed as indicators of the magnitude of biogeochemical drivers influencing lake DOM across ecoclimatic zones, including fluorescent DOM/DOC indicating economic activity, percentages of a degraded fluorescent DOM component indicating solar irradiation, and percent tyrosine-like DOM reflecting DOM processing time within the watershed and lake.</p>

Sensory neurons couple arousal and foraging decisions in C. elegans

<p>Foraging animals optimize feeding decisions by adjusting both common and rare behavioral patterns. Here, we characterize the relationship between an animal's arousal state and a rare decision to leave a patch of bacterial food. Using long-term tracking and behavioral state classification, we find that food leaving decisions in <em>C. elegans</em> are coupled to arousal states across multiple timescales. Leaving emerges probabilistically over minutes from the high arousal roaming state, but is suppressed during the low arousal dwelling state. Immediately before leaving, animals have a brief acceleration in speed that appears as a characteristic signature of this behavioral motif. Neuromodulatory mutants and optogenetic manipulations that increase roaming have a coupled increase in leaving rates, and similarly acute manipulations that inhibit feeding induce both roaming and leaving. By contrast, inactivating a set of chemosensory neurons that depend on the cGMP-gated transduction channel TAX-4 uncouples roaming and leaving dynamics. In addition, <em>tax-4-</em>expressing sensory neurons promote lawn-leaving behaviors that are elicited by feeding inhibition. Our results indicate that sensory neurons responsive to both internal and external cues play an integrative role in arousal and foraging decisions.</p>

Evidence of migratory coupling between grey wolves and migratory caribou

<p>Large-scale animal migrations influence population and community dynamics along with ecosystem functioning. The migratory coupling concept posits that movement of migrant prey can lead to large-scale movements of predators. In northern ecosystems, spatial patterns and behavioral responses of grey wolf to spatio-temporal changes in its primary prey distribution, the migratory caribou, remain poorly documented. We used a long-term GPS dataset (2011–2021) of 59 wolves and 431 migratory caribou from the declining Rivière-aux-Feuilles herd (Québec, Canada) to investigate movement patterns and space use of wolves related to caribou seasonal distribution. Wolves home ranges overlapped with areas used by caribou year-round, especially in May and winter. Wolves exhibited 3 annual tactics: sedentary (17%), long-distance migration (&gt;700 km) between wintering areas and the tundra (36%), and a medium-distance migration, stopping their northward movement near the treeline (47%). Migratory wolves started spring migration northward earlier than caribou, intercepting their prey on their way to calving grounds, but departed southward for fall migration later than caribou, tracking them on their way back to wintering areas. Wolves near or overlapping areas used by caribou exhibited lower monthly movement rates compared to wolves located further away. Overlap of home range among wolves was higher during migrations and winter but decreased in summer when wolves rear pups and caribou are dispersed on summer grounds. We provide evidence of migratory coupling between grey wolves and migratory caribou, with most wolves adjusting their space use patterns to match their primary prey distribution. Although predation pressure may affect the dynamics of declining caribou herds, the global decline of that prey may in turn impact predators on the long-term, potentially enhancing intraspecific competition for new resources. Highlighting this migratory coupling is a key step to developing appropriate conservation and management measures for both guilds in the context of large-scale migratory prey decline.</p>

A global hybrid tropical cyclone risk model based upon statistical and coupled climate models - Supporting figures and data
