Data and plot scripts for "Rising complexity and falling explanatory power in ecology"

Analyses of published research can provide a realistic perspective on the progress of science. By analyzing more than 18 000 articles published by the preeminent ecological societies, we found that (1) ecological research is becoming increasingly statistically complex, reporting a growing number of P values per article and (2) the value of reported coefficient of determination (R2) has been falling steadily, suggesting a decrease in the marginal explanatory power of ecology. These trends may be due to changes in the way ecology is studied or in the way the findings of investigations are reported. Determining the reason for increasing complexity and declining marginal explanatory power would require a critical review of the scientific process in ecology, from research design to dissemination, and could influence the public interpretation and policy implications of ecological findings.

Read More: http://www.esajournals.org/doi/abs/10.1890/130230

Datasets used for analysis and plotting in the study by Zhou et al. "Antarctic vortex dehydration in 2023 as a substantial removal pathway for Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai water vapour"

These data are model simulated water vapour (H2O) and ozone (O3) model mixing ratios between 2022 and 2023 that were used to create figures for the study by Zhou et al. "Antarctic vortex dehydration in 2023 as a substantial removal pathway for Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai water vapour".

We use the TOMCAT/SLIMCAT 3-D off-line chemical transport model (Chipperfield, 2006) to represent the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai (HTHH) H2O plume and quantify its longevity and ozone impacts. The model was run at a horizontal resolution of 2.8 degrees and 32 levels from the surface to about 60 km forced with ECMWF ERA5 meteorology.

A control simulation (file name with "MPC741") without treatment of HTHH was integrated from 1980 to October 2023. Output from run control for January 1st, 2022 was used to intialise a HTHH H2O perturbed run (run HT, file name with "MPC744") until October 2023 with the injection of 150 Tg of H2O into the low-mid stratosphere at southern subtropical latitudes. To test the possible future evolution of the HTHH H2O three further model runs were performed. These were integrated from January 1st, 2023 until 2030 using repeating ERA-5 meteorology for 2022. Run Con_2022 (file name with "MPC741__2022pd") was an extension of run control; run HT2022 was an extension of run HT (file name with "MPC744_2022pd"), and run HT2022ns (file name with "MPC744_2022pdns") was the same as run HT_2022 but had sedimentation of PSC particles turned off. Please see our paper for more information about the simulations.

Data from: Winter game crop plots for gamebirds retain hedgerow breeding songbirds in an improved grassland landscape

The cause of recent population declines in some farmland / hedgerow breeding bird species in the UK is related to a lack of cover and food resources in winter. In improved grassland areas some of those declines have been particularly acute and some have been shown to be related to the availability of grass and weed seed in winter. The provision of seed-bearing crops as part of AES options has been shown to benefit some of these birds. Game crop plots sown on shooting estates for holding and driving gamebirds in autumn and winter have been shown to hold relatively high densities of farmland and wood-edge birds during the winter.

We studied breeding songbirds in hedges in a primarily improved grassland area in the SW of England where there are some large shooting estates that sow relatively large game crop plots (1 - 5 ha) in the landscape. In this study we found that otherwise similar hedges in terms of size and density near to those winter game crop plots, had between 1.5 and 2 times as many breeding resident songbirds per unit length the following spring compared to hedges further away from game crop plots. This was despite game management in these plots being wound down during February and in many cases, the crops themselves being removed by mid-March. Hedges within approximately 350m from game crop plots had more breeding birds. We discuss possible mechanisms and suggest that some passerines preferentially establish breeding territories in hedges near to game crops in late winter. We suggest how to distribute game crop plots to maximise any benefit in an improved grassland landscape.

Diagnostic plots of cross-matches between Fermi-LAT (4FGL-DR4) and SRG/eROSITA sources (eRASS:4)

This repository provides diagnostic plots used for visual inspection accompanying the paper "Searching for X-ray counterparts of unassociated Fermi-LAT sources and rotation-powered pulsars with SRG/eROSITA" by Martin G. F. Mayer and Werner Becker, published in Astronomy & Astrophysics in 2024.

The attached tarball contains ~ 500 PDF files, one per Fermi source with at least one possible X-ray counterpart. In each file, the top row of panels displays the eROSITA (eRASS:4) X-ray image of the Fermi-LAT uncertainty region in the energy bands 0.2-0.6, 0.6-2.3, and 2.3-5.0 keV, overlaid with the 1 sigma (blue dashed line) and 95% error ellipse of the 4FGL source (blue solid line), and the position of the detected X-ray sources (red). The pixel size is 12 arcsec.

For each X-ray source, the bottom panels show the local distribution of optical sources from Gaia DR3 (left), mid-infrared sources from CatWISE2020 (center), as well as SIMBAD entries and radio sources (right) around the respective X-ray source position (error bars). In the left and center panels, the size of the markers is proportional to the source brightness, and their color reflects the photometric colors (with bluer markers indicating bluer colors). In the left panel, pentagonal (triangular) markers correspond to sources with statistically significant (insignificant) proper motion or parallax, circular markers indicate the lack of a complete astrometric solution for a source.
