DEM, rock point clouds, and 3D morphological features of Martian rocks in the landing region of Zhurong rover

Rocks on the Martian surface and their three-dimensional (3D) morphology record the geological evolution of Mars and its interaction history with outer space. China's Zhurong Mars rover has traveled on Mars for nearly 2 kilometers and obtained a wealth of data, enabling the fine-scale measurement and morphological analysis of 3D Martian rocks. With 178 high-resolution Zhurong NaTeCams stereo images acquired in rings covering large circular areas, we extracted 6,185 3D rocks from centimeter-scale to meter-scale distributed along the traverse of the Zhurong rover using an automatic approach. This dataset includes the digital elevation model (DEM), extracted rocks in point clouds, and the 3D morphological features of rocks derived from the Zhurong NaTeCams images, obtained in six areas along the traverse of the Zhurong rover.

To use this dataset, please cite "Li, Y., Xiao, Z., Ma, C., Zeng, L., Zhang, W., Peng, M., & Li, A. Extreme Climate Risks and Financial Tipping Points

This repository contains the data and the source code for the simulations and figures of the article.

Abstract

Designing climate change policies requires considering the feedback loops between mitigation and adaptation, since more mitigation efforts today will trigger lower adaptation costs. In this framework, carbon taxes are often seen as promising tools but at the risk of financially overburdening the private sector, depriving it of important economic resources. However, analyzing the financial feasibility of mitigation-adaptation policies using conventional Integrated Assessment Models (IAM) is limited, as they do not simultaneously endogenize economic growth, emissions, and damages.

Here, we present IDEE (Integrated Dynamic Environment-Economic), a new IAM based on the coupling of an Earth Model of Intermediate Complexity and a non-linear macroeconomic model in continuous time. Then, we analyze the simultaneous effects of carbon taxes and public spending, both on climate and on the world economy. We show that, above a warming about +2.3°C, damages drastically foster the need for additional investments in productive capital—an adaptation necessity—that potentially leads private firms to a debt overhang and a worldwide cascade of defaults. This suggests that the Paris Agreement target should not only be motivated by the climatic non-linearities and tipping points arising beyond the +2°C threshold, but also by the emergence of financial tipping points. We also show that, provided public subsidies are high enough, a tax of usd 300 per tCO2e by 2030 enables reaching net-zero emissions in 2050, preventing firms from suffering global bankruptcy.

We anticipate IDEE to be a starting point for a new class of IAMs that better represent the reciprocal feedback loops between the environment and the economy.

Development of a national point-of-care ultrasound training course for physicians in Japan: A 3-year evaluation

Purpose: Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) allows bedside clinicians to acquire, interpret, and integrate ultrasound images into patient care. Although the availability of POCUS training courses has increased, the educational effectiveness of these courses is unclear.

Methods: From 2017 to 2019, we investigated the educational effectiveness of a standardized 2-day hands-on POCUS training course and changes in pre- and post-course exam scores in relationship to participants’ (n = 571) clinical rank, years of POCUS experience, and frequency of POCUS use in clinical practice.

Results: The mean pre- and post-course examination scores were 67.2 (standard deviation [SD] 12.3) and 79.7 (SD 9.7), respectively. Higher pre-course examination scores were associated with higher clinical rank, more years of POCUS experience, and more frequent POCUS use (p < 0.05). All participants showed significant changes in pre- to post-course exam scores. Though pre-course scores differed by clinical rank, POCUS experience, and frequency of POCUS use, differences in post-course scores according to participant baseline differences were non-significant.

Conclusion: A standardized hands-on POCUS training course is effective for improving POCUS knowledge regardless of baseline differences in clinical rank, POCUS experience, or frequency of POCUS use. Future studies shall evaluate changes in POCUS use in clinical practice after POCUS training.

Open Data of the article "Literal vs. default translation. Challenging the constructs with Middle Egyptian translation as an extreme case in point"

The file contains the datasets and the code generated for the analyses presented in the article "Literal vs. default translation. Challenging the constructs with Middle Egyptian translation as an extreme case in point", to be published in Sendebar in 2023.

Abstract of the article:

This paper presents the results of a study that compares the constructs of literal translation (Schaeffer & Carl, 2014) and default translation (Halverson, 2019) by means of an observational, exploratory study with Middle Egyptian translation as an extreme case in point. Two graduating students of the MA in Egyptology at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and three recent graduates of the same MA took part in the study. They translated two excerpts from two Middle Egyptian literary texts into Spanish. InputLog was used to collect translation-process data and derive word-level indicators of cognitive effort (typos per word, word typing speed, and within-word pause) from them. Results showed a clear link between default translations and cognitive effort (low number of typos, low number of respites, and fast writing speed). However, the assumption that deviations from literality cause greater cognitive effort was not observed. Hence, default translation may serve as a more adequate construct to describe the regular way translators perform.

Experimental data: Single- and double-wythe brick masonry walls subjected to four-point bending tests under different support conditions: Simply supported, rigid, non-rigid

This dataset contains the results of laboratory quasi-static monotonic four-point bending tests conducted at RISE Research Institutes of Sweden on eleven natural-scale unreinforced brick masonry walls. The walls were spanning vertically between two reinforced concrete slabs and were tested under three different support conditions defined according to the American manual UFC 3-340-02: simply supported, rigid, non-rigid. The influence of these support conditions on the out-of-plane behavior of the walls was studied on elements with varying thickness – single and double wythe – and subjected to different levels of axial compression (or overload). The walls were tested inside of a bi-axial test setup that allowed not only the lateral, out-of-plane force but also the axial, arching action to be measured throughout the tests. Optical full-field displacement measurements were also acquired by two systems of cameras making use of the 2D and 3D Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique.

The data generated from these tests are made here available to support further investigations on masonry structures subjected to extreme lateral, out-of-plane actions. The dataset includes 3 compressed folders, ordered from 01 to 03, along with an auxiliary document describing the content and organization of the dataset.

The data presented here are described in the following research article:

Godio M, Flansbjer M, Williams Portal N (2023).
