Dataset: Occupancy Detection, Tracking, and Estimation Using a Vertically Mounted Depth Sensor [Sample Dataset]

<p>[Sample Dataset File.]</p> <p>Occupancy detection, tracking, and estimation has a wide range of applications including improving building energy efficiency, safety, and security of the occupants. As depth sensors are getting cheaper, they offer a viable solution to estimate occupancy accurately in a non-privacy invasive manner. Even though there are publicly available depth datasets, they do not consider placing the sensor in the ceiling looking downwards to estimate occupancy. We deployed four Kinect for XBOX One in four CMU classrooms and conference rooms for a period of four weeks in 2017 and collected over 6 TB of depth data. We annotate this huge dataset by labelling bounding boxes around occupants and release the annotated dataset.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The datasets contains the ouput simulation data of the Exo-FMS GCM and of the post-processing with gCMCRT for Effects of the internal temperature on vertical mixing and on cloud structures in Ultra Hot Jupiters</p> <p>Context. The vertical mixing in hot Jupiter atmospheres plays a critical role in the formation and spacial distribution of cloud particles<br>in their atmospheres. This affects the observed spectra of a planet through cloud opacity, which can be influenced by the degree of<br>cold trapping of refractory species in the deep atmosphere.<br>Aims. We aim to isolate the effects of the internal temperature on the mixing efficiency in the atmospheres of Ultra Hot Jupiters (UHJ)<br>and the spacial distribution of cloud particles across the globe.<br>Methods. We couple a simplified tracer based cloud model, picket fence radiative-transfer scheme and mixing length theory to the<br>Exo-FMS general circulation model. We run the model for five different internal temperatures at typical UHJ atmosphere system<br>parameters.<br>Results. Our results show the convective eddy diffusion coefficient remains low throughout the vast majority of the atmosphere, with<br>mixing dominated by advective flows. However, some regions can show convective mixing in the upper atmosphere for colder interior<br>temperatures. The vertical extent of the clouds is reduced as the internal temperature is increased. Additionally, a global cloud layer<br>gets formed below the radiative-convective boundary (RCB) in the cooler cases.<br>Conclusions. Convection is generally strongly inhibited in UHJ atmospheres above the RCB due to their strong irradiation. Convective<br>mixing plays a minor role in keeping cloud particles aloft in ultra hot Jupiters with warm interiors. Our results suggest isolated upper<br>atmosphere regions above cold interiors may exhibit strong convective mixing, allowing aerosols to be better retained in these areas.</p>

Data from: Mutualism effectiveness and vertical transmission of symbiotic fungal endophytes in response to host genetic background

Certain species of the Pooideae subfamily develop stress tolerance and herbivory resistance through symbiosis with vertically-transmitted, asexual fungi. This symbiosis is specific, and genetic factors modulate compatibility between partners. Although gene flow is clearly a fitness trait in allogamous grasses, since it injects hybrid vigor and raw material for evolution, it could reduce compatibility and thus, mutualism effectiveness. To explore the importance of host genetic background in modulating the performance of symbiosis, Lolium multiflorum plants, infected and non-infected with Neotyphodium occultans, were crossed with genetically distant plants of isolines (susceptible and resistant to diclofop-methyl herbicide) bred from two cultivars, and exposed to stress. The endophyte improved seedling survival in genotypes susceptible to herbicide, while it had a negative effect on one of the genetically resistant crosses. Mutualism provided resistance to herbivory independently of the host genotype, but this effect vanished under stress. While no endophyte effect was observed on host reproductive success, it was increased by inter-population plant crosses. Neither gene flow nor herbicide had an important impact on endophyte transmission. Host fitness improvements due to gene flow do not appear to result in direct conflict with mutualism while this seems to be an important mechanism for the ecological and contemporary evolution of the symbiotum.

Data from: Bouldering: an alternative strategy to long-vertical climbing in root-climbing hortensias

In the Neotropics, the genus Hydrangea of the popular ornamental hortensia family is represented by climbing species that strongly cling to their support surface by means of adhesive roots closely positioned along specialized anchoring stems. These root-climbing hortensia species belong to the nearly exclusive American Hydrangea section Cornidia and generally are long lianescent climbers that mostly flower and fructify high in the host tree canopy. The Mexican species Hydrangea seemannii, however, encompasses not only long lianescent climbers of large vertical rock walls and coniferous trees, but also short 'shrub-like' climbers on small rounded boulders. To investigate growth form plasticity in root-climbing hortensia species, we tested the hypothesis that support variability (e.g. differences in size and shape) promotes plastic responses observable at the mechanical, structural and anatomical level. Stem bending properties, architectural axis categorization, tissue organization and wood density were compared between boulder and long-vertical tree-climbers of H. seemannii. For comparison, the mechanical patterns of a closely related, strictly long-vertical tree-climbing species were investigated. Hydrangea seemannii has fine-tuned morphological, mechanical and anatomical responses to support variability suggesting the presence of two alternative root-climbing strategies that are optimized for their particular environmental conditions. Our results suggest that variation of some stem anatomical traits provides a buffering effect that regulates the mechanical and hydraulic demands of two distinct plant architectures. The adaptive value of observed plastic responses and the importance of considering growth form plasticity in evolutionary and conservation studies are discussed.

Data from: Landscape structure influences urban vegetation vertical structure

Vegetation vertical structure is important for biodiversity and ecosystem service provision. In cities, however, while variation in the spatial extent and distribution of vegetation has been widely investigated, vertical vegetation structure and its potential drivers have not. Understanding how vegetation vertical structure varies across cities and identifying the potential drivers of this variation will improve the management of urban vegetation for biodiversity and ecosystem services. We used light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data to quantify the vertical structure of vegetation across Brisbane, Australia, at 1-km2 and 1-ha spatial scales and investigated how this structure varied in response to biophysical, socioeconomic, urban form and landscape structure variables. Using model selection techniques, we found that landscape structure variables related to tree cover (tree cover extent and spatial configuration) best explained the vegetation vertical structure at both spatial scales. Biophysical and urban form variables were also important, but only in combination with landscape structure. Mean vegetation vertical complexity, foliage projective cover and canopy height at a site all decreased as the treed proportion of the surrounding urban landscape decreased. In general, these vertical structure variables also increased where patches of vegetation were clustered together spatially. Synthesis and applications. Using light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data and model selection techniques, we show that the extent and vertical structure of urban vegetation are not independent and that reduced extent and increased fragmentation of urban vegetation are associated with simplification of its vertical structure. If common, this relationship means that managing urban vegetation for biodiversity and ecosystem services should not focus solely on the amount of tree cover or green space present across cities, but also on identifying where interventions to improve vegetation vertical complexity are required. Our study provides important insights into where these locations may be in cities.
