Data from: The success of a habitat specialist biological control agent in the face of disturbance

A field study was conducted in alfalfa fields in the Arlington Agricultural Research Station, Dane County, Wisconsin, USA.

Three fields were studied. Each field was divided into three sections and in each section a one of three treatments was implemented:

1. Control – harvesting normally, once a month (medium disturbance)

2. Insecticide – harvesting as in the control + implementing insecticide spray (permethrin insecticide Pounce 32 EC (8 oz/ac)) immediately after harvest (high disturbance)

3. Strips – harvesting in strips (low disturbance)

In each field and each section insects were collected during the summer of 2001 (exact dates are in the files). Insects were collected with sweep nets, the number of sweeps changed in according to the number of aphids in the field, and is given in the files for each sample. Mummies of Apidius ervi were collected by visual searches of three minutes.

Behavioral analysis for market anomalies with heterogeneous agent model

This paper investigates the effect of heterogeneity and bounded rationality on market anomalies in price formation. We establish a heterogeneous agent model under prospect theory, where asset price fluctuation is determined by evolutionary dynamics system embedded in the model. Specifically, our model includes three types of expectation schemes related to different decision-making progresses: the rational scheme, the emotional scheme and the noise scheme. Agents under emotional scheme make decisions based on the cumulative prospect theory framework, which makes psychological factor tractable. By analyzing the distribution of return rate under selected parameters, we show that the model return shares the same pattern as those of SSE 50 Index. Furthermore, we investigate the factors of option implied volatility smile based on dynamic system, and the results suggest that the smile anomaly may be associated with the tail risk of the underlying asset's return distribution, which is effected by market stability and psychological factors.

Does the presence of the biological control agent, Hypena opulenta (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) on Swallow-Worts deter Monarch oviposition?

Abstract Invasive black and pale swallow-worts (Vincetoxicum nigrum (L.) Moench, and Vincetoxicum rossicum Kelopow), which are related to milkweeds, can act as ecological traps for monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus L. (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae)) as they lay eggs on them that fail to develop. A recently approved biological control agent against swallow-worts, Hypena opulenta Christoph, occupies the same feeding guild on swallow-worts as monarch larvae and could be perceived as a competitor to monarchs. We tested how the presence of this defoliating moth on swallow-worts may influence monarch host selection. In a two-year field experiment, we placed pale swallow-wort plants that were either infested with H. opulenta or noninfested as well as common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca L.), into monarch habitats to assess oviposition rates. In the laboratory, monarchs were either given a choice or not between milkweeds and black swallow-worts with or without H. opulenta. While monarchs strongly preferred common milkweed in the field, up to 25% of the eggs we observed were laid on pale swallow-wort, without preference for swallow-wort with (10.7%) or without (14.3%) H. opulenta. In laboratory choice and no-choice tests, monarchs did not lay any eggs on black swallow-wort, likely because of the long-term laboratory rearing on common milkweeds. Our results confirm that pale swallow-wort may act as an oviposition sink to monarchs in Michigan as well. Since the biological control program is still in its infancy, the nature of interactions between monarchs and H. opulenta may change as the biocontrol agent becomes more widespread.

Data from: Space and rank: infants expect agents in higher position to be socially dominant

Social hierarchies exist throughout the animal kingdom, including among humans. Our daily interactions inevitably reflect social dominance relationships between individuals. How do we mentally represent such concepts? Studies show that social dominance is represented as vertical space (i.e., high=dominant) by adults and preschool children, suggesting a space-dominance representational link in social cognition. However, little is known about its early development. Here, we present experimental evidence that 12- to 16-month-old infants expect agents presented in a higher spatial position to be more socially dominant than agents in a lower spatial position. After infants repeatedly watched the higher and lower agents being presented simultaneously, they looked longer at the screen when the lower agent subsequently outcompeted the higher agent in securing a reward object, suggesting that this outcome violated their higher-is-dominant expectation. We first manipulated agents' positions by presenting them on a podium (Experiment 1). Then we presented the agents on a double-decker stand to make their spatial positions directly above or below each other (Experiment 2), and we replicated the results (Experiment 3). This research demonstrates that infants expect spatially higher-positioned agents to be socially dominant, suggesting deep roots of the space-dominance link in ontogeny.

Testing sunfish as zooplankton control agents for wastewater-algal cultivation: Nutrient, invertebrate, and algae data

Wastewater-algal cultivation is a promising means of recovering polluting nutrients and converting them into useful algal biomass. However, open raceway ponds used for wastewater-algal cultivation are prone to contamination by zooplankton, which often severely reduces algal yields. We conducted an experiment to test the potential for bluegill sunfish to improve yields by suppressing zooplankton. We used cages to protect the fish from the paddlewheels in 230-L raceway ponds. In nine raceways, the cage surrounded the paddlewheel and fish, if present, had access to the remaining tank area. In another nine raceways, the cage was on the opposite side from the paddlewheel, and contained the fish when present. Six fishless controls were implemented across both cage placements. We filled the raceways with synthetic wastewater and local plankton, and one juvenile bluefill sunfish (aside from controls). After 19 days we sampled dissolved nutrients, algae, and invertebrates in each raceway. This dataset consists of four csv files containing data from laboratory analyses of these samples. The data include dissolved nutrients, algal dry weights, zooplankton and benthic invertebrate counts, algal biovolumes, and algal nutrient content for each of the 18 raceway ponds.
