Bite force, body size, and octopamine mediate mating interactions in the house cricket (Acheta domesticus)

Mating interactions are rife with conflict because the evolutionary interests of males and females seldom coincide. Intersexual conflict affects sexual selection, yet the proximate factors underlying male coercive ability and female resistance are poorly understood. Male combat outcomes are often influenced by bite force, with superior biters being more likely to achieve victory over poorer biters in a range of species, including crickets. If good performers also achieve mating success through sexual coercion, then bite force might play a role in intersexual conflict as well. We tested the capacity of bite force to influence mating interactions in house crickets both directly by measuring bite forces of males and females and by altering male bite capacity through neuropharmacological manipulation. In addition, the invertebrate neurotransmitter octopamine both mediates aggression and underlies motivation to bite in male house crickets. By blocking octopamine receptors through the application of an antagonist, epinastine, we tested the effects of reduced bite force on male mating success. Our results show that male bite capacity, in combination with body size, influences both the likelihood and the outcomes of mating interactions, whereas treatment of males with epinastine eliminates motivation to mate. Our results suggest a functional role for bite force in affecting both sexual conflict and sexual selection and expand our knowledge of the influence of biogenic amines on reproductive behavior.

Potential of Mean Force (PMFs) for Zerovalent Aluminium (100-110-111) NanoParticles

The dataset encompasses the potential of mean force data concerning three distinct fcc configurations of zero valent aluminum nanoparticles: (100), (110), and (111), in interaction with side-chain analogs of 22 diverse amino acids, which constitute the basic building blocks of proteins. The calculations employed the adaptive Well-Tempered Metadynamics method, a well-established technique previously utilized for assessing biomolecule adsorption on materials like Fe, TiO2 and Ag. To conduct these simulations, we utilized the GROMACS and PLUMED software packages, while the construction of the aluminium slabs was accomplished with the CHARMM-GUI/Nanomaterial Modeler. In the metadynamics biased simulation, the Surface Separation Distance (SSD) served as the primary reaction coordinate. This SSD quantifies the minimum separation between the center-of-mass (COM) of the side-chain analog (SCA) molecule and the surface atoms (ri) along the z-coordinate.

ACCESS-OM2 1° resolution global repeat decade forcing control simulation data for 1972-2018

This data set contains control simulation output from the global ocean-sea ice model ACCESS-OM2 in the 1° horizontal configuration over the period 1972-2018.

The model was spun-up using modified repeat decade forcing for the period 1962-1971 to equilibrate the ocean to this period prior to most of the anthropogenic ocean heat uptake. This repeat decade forcing simulation was then continued up to present time and relabeled as the control simulation. The output is saved in sets of ten years (output200, output201, ...) in the ocean/ and ice/ folders as netcdf files.

The last output folder contains the data for 2012-2018 with the last four years of this output folder (output204) are again the 1972-1975 period and should be omitted from any analysis.

For more information on the spin-up and the model configuration, see the Methods section and Fig. 1 in Huguenin, M.F., Holmes, R.M. & England, M.H. Drivers and distribution of global ocean heat uptake over the last half century. Nat Commun 13, 4921 (2022). https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-022-32540-51

Data from: A hierarchical model for external electrical control of an insect, accounting for inter-individual variation of muscle force properties

Cyborg control of insect movement is promising for developing miniature, high-mobility, and efficient biohybrid robots. However, considering the inter-individual variation of the insect neuromuscular apparatus and its neural control is challenging. We propose a hierarchical model including inter-individual variation of muscle properties of three leg muscles 14 involved in propulsion (retractor coxae), joint stiffness (pro- and retractor coxae), and stance-swing transition (protractor coxae and levator trochanteris) in the stick insect Carausius morosus. To estimate mechanical effects induced by external muscle stimulation, the model is based on the systematic evaluation of joint torques as functions of electrical stimulation parameters. A nearly linear relationship between the stimulus burst duration and generated torque was observed. This stimulus-torque characteristic holds for burst durations of up to 500ms, corresponding to the stance and swing phase durations of medium to fast walking stick insects. Hierarchical Bayesian modeling revealed that linearity of the stimulus-torque characteristic was invariant, with individually varying slopes. Individual prediction of joint torques provides significant benefits for precise cyborg control.

Force

On the four corners of balustrades that face the Washington Monument in Baltimore sit sculptures created by Antoine-Louis Barye (1796-1875). They are figural groups depicting allegories of *War*,* Peace*, *Force*, and *Order*. On the back of the marble post that *Force* rests upon, someone has written "LAND BACK!", a reference to the Land Back movement that fights to restore stolen territory to Indigenous nations. The writing highlights how these sculptures reinforce the ideology of colonization and that the land they sit over was forcefully taken from its original inhabitants. Created using 213 images taken with a Nikon D750 and processed in RealityCapture. Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab
