Grandparental co-residence and grandchild survival in a pre-industrial population

Although grandparents are and have been important alloparents to their grandchildren, they are not necessarily only beneficial but can also compete with grandchildren over limited resources. Competition over parental care or other resources may exist especially if grandparents live in the same household with grandchildren and it can be dependent on grandchild age. By utilising demographic data collected from historic population registers in Finland between 1761 and 1895 (study sample n = 4041) we investigate whether grandparents living in the same household with grandchildren are detrimental or beneficial for grandchild survival. Having a living but not co-residing grandmother or grandfather were both associated with better survival whereas having a co-resident grandfather was associated with lower chance of survival for infants (age < 1 year). Separating the effect between maternal and paternal grandparents and grandmothers and grandfathers revealed no differences in the effects between lineages. Negative effect of having a co-residing grandfather was not significant when grandfathers were separated for lineage-specific models. These results implicate that accounting for the co-residence status and child's age, grandparents were mostly beneficial when not co-residing with very young children and that having a co-residing grandfather at that age could be associated with lower chances to survive. Predictions made by grandmother hypothesis and resource competition both received support. The results presented here also offered comparison points to preindustrial and contemporary three-generational families.

A New Dataset of People Flow in an Industrial Site with UWB and Motion Capture Systems

Improving performance and safety conditions at industrial sites remain key elements of the Group's strategy. Major issues require the ability to dynamically locate people and assets on the site. Currently, the security and regulation of access to areas with different characteristics (types of tasks, level of risk, or confidentiality...) are often carried out with badge doors or barriers. These means present several weaknesses in the face of inappropriate movements of people, but also of objects or tools. Also, there is increasing use of technological devices requiring precise localization in the industrial environment such as AGVs (mobile robots or drones) or augmented reality devices. It is therefore becoming essential to have tools to dynamically manage these flows of people or goods associated with precise location technologies. An Ultra-Wide-Band solution will be employed to quickly and efficiently identify persons who may find themselves in unauthorized areas or perform tasks for which they are uninstructed. Besides dynamic people tracking, this solution can overcome problems of moving objects and tools in production workshops. We propose a new dataset to have information about workers' displacement and evaluate workers' performance and safety.

The dataset is available at this link: IndoorIndustrialLocalisationDataset: https://github.com/vauchey/IndoorInsdustrialLocalisationDataset/

Paper :

Mickael Delamare1, Fabrice Duval2, Remi Boutteau3.

1cesi, CESI,Rouen campus, 76000 ROUEN, France,mdelamare@cesi.fr
2 LINEACT CESI, LINEACT CESI, Rouen campus,76000 ROUEN, France, fduval@cesi.fr
3 ESIGELEC , IRSEEM, Rouen, France, Normandie Univ, UNIROUEN, remi.boutteau@univ-rouen.fr,

Link : https://www.mdpi.com/1424-8220/20/16/4511

DOI : https://doi.org/10.3390/s20164511

Accepted to the journal Sensors (MDPI)

Estimation of worker population size-density by nest counting in the Asian weaver ant, Oecophylla smaragdina (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) and it's dynamic in oil palm plantations industry

Supplementary material-information supporting the article of research related to the Asian weaver ant population size-density in the oil palm plantations. The findings suggested an abundant numerical amount of individual workers per colony. The weaver ant were self-sustainable surviving during long years i.e. more than 20 years. This is the first study carried out on a large scale in oil palm plantation directly in the field by gathering only empirical data and monitor the population dynamic on a long term basis.

V-RMS and Temperature metrics of the ball bearing units of an industrial blower

Sensor devices were attached to the two mounted ball bearing units of an industrial blower and collected v-rms and temperature measurements throughout several months of operation.

The v-rms is a vibration metric representing the average velocity of the bearings' vibrations and here is expressed in inch/sec, while the temperature is a self explanatory metric and is expressed in degrees of Fahrenheit.

The data were collected during a normal and an encumbered operational production period and were used for the training and evaluation of an Autoencoder model for the purpose of predictive maintenance and the task of anomaly detection.
