NARSTO EPA Supersite (SS) Fresno, Particulate Matter (PM) 2.5 Organic and Elemental Carbon Data

NARSTO_EPA_SS_FRESNO_PM25_OC_EC is the North American Research Strategy for Tropospheric Ozone (NARSTO) Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Supersite (SS) Fresno, Particulate Matter (PM) 2.5 Organic and Elemental Carbon Data. This data set contains measurements taken from a continuous carbon monitor, Model Rupprecht and Patashnick (R&P) 5400C operated from January 13, 2000 to March 31, 2005, and a Sunset Carbon Analyzer at the Fresno supersite. The sample collection time was 1 hour; the sample analysis time was one hour. Data were output once an hour, two hours after the start of sample collection. The Fresno Supersite is one of several Supersites established in urban areas within the United States by the EPA to better understand the measurement, sources, and health effects of suspended particulate matter (PM). The site is located at 3425 First Street, approximately 1 km north of the downtown commercial district. First Street was a four-lane artery with moderate traffic levels. Commercial establishments, office buildings, churches, and schools were located north and south of the monitor. Medium-density single-family homes and some apartments were located in the blocks to the east and west of First Street. The Fresno Supersite began operation in May of 1999.The EPA PM Supersites Program was an ambient air monitoring research program designed to provide information of value to the atmospheric sciences, and human health and exposure research communities. Eight geographically diverse projects were chosen to specifically address the following EPA research priorities: (1) to characterize PM, its constituents, precursors, co-pollutants, atmospheric transport, and its source categories that affect the PM in any region; (2) to address the research questions and scientific uncertainties about PM source-receptor and exposure-health effects relationships; and (3) to compare and evaluate different methods of characterizing PM including testing new and emerging measurement methods.NARSTO, which has since disbanded, was a public/private partnership, whose membership spanned across government, utilities, industry, and academe throughout Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The primary mission was to coordinate and enhance policy-relevant scientific research and assessment of tropospheric pollution behavior; activities provide input for science-based decision-making and determination of workable, efficient, and effective strategies for local and regional air-pollution management. Data products from local, regional, and international monitoring and research programs are still available.

Biodiversity Survey of the Cape - Mapping Dissolved Organic Carbon sources and cycling in aquatic biodiversity hotspots across South Africa's Greater Cape Floristic Region

This dataset includes the spectral (absorption and fluorescence) characteristics of colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) coincident with field measurements of hyperspectral water remote sensing reflectance for improved remote sensing algorithm development. Samples were collected within three ecologically distinct but socio-economically vital bays surrounding South Africa's Greater Cape Floristic Region: St Helena Bay, Walker Bay, and Algoa Bay. Transport of Particulate Organic Carbon in The Huanghe: Insights from Lateral And Vertical Heterogeneity in a River Cross-section

<p>The Huanghe (Yellow River), one of the largest turbid river systems in the world, has long been recognized as a major contributor of suspended particulate matter (SPM) to the ocean. However, over the last few decades, the SPM export flux of the Huanghe has decreased over 90% due to the high management, impacting the global export of particulate organic carbon (POC). To better constrain sources and modes of transport of POC beyond the previously investigated transportation of POC near the channel surface, SPM samples were for the first time collected over a whole channel cross-section in the lower Huanghe. Riverine SPM samples were analyzed for particle size and major element contents, as well as for POC content and dual carbon isotopes (<sup>13</sup>C and <sup>14</sup>C). The results show clear vertical and lateral heterogeneity of SPM physical and chemical characteristics within the river cross section, with for example finer SPM carrying more POC with higher <sup>14</sup>C activity near the surface and the right bank. Notably, we discuss how bank erosion in the alluvial plain is likely to generate lateral heterogeneity in POC composition. The Huanghe POC is millennial-aged (4,020 &plusmn; 500 radiocarbon years), dominated by organic carbon (OC) from the biosphere, while the lithospheric fraction reaches up to ca. 33%. The mobilization of aged and refractory OC from deeper soil horizons of the loess-paleosol sequence through erosion in the Chinese Loess Plateau is an important mechanism contributing to fluvial POC in the Huanghe drainage basin. The involvement of this OC fraction has significance for the regional and global carbon cycles, especially regarding its final fate in the estuary. Altogether, this study sheds light on the mechanism of fluvial transfer of POC and corresponding impacts on the carbon cycle in large river systems strongly perturbed by anthropogenic activities.</p>

Management-induced changes in soil organic carbon and related crop yield dynamics in China's cropland

<p>Enhancing soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration and food supply are vital for human survival when facing climate change. Site-specific best management practices (BMPs) are being promoted for adoption globally as solutions. However, how SOC and crop yield are related to each other in responding to BMPs remains unknown. Here, path analysis based on meta-analysis and machine learning was conducted to identify the effects and potential mechanisms of how the relationship between SOC and crop yield responds to site-specific BMPs in China. The results showed that BMPs could significantly enhance SOC and maintain or increase crop yield. The maximum benefits in SOC (30.6%) and crop yield (79.8%) occurred in mineral fertilizer combined with organic inputs (MOF). Specifically, the optimal SOC and crop yield would be achieved when the areas were arid, soil pH was &ge;7.3, initial SOC content was &le;10 g kg<sup>-1</sup>, duration was &gt;10 years, and the nitrogen (N) input level was 100-200 kg ha<sup>-1</sup>. Further analysis revealed that the original SOC level and crop yield change showed an inverted V-shaped structure. The association between the changes in SOC and crop yield might be linked to the positive role of the nutrient-mediated effect. The results generally suggested that improving the SOC can strongly support better crop performance. Limitations in increasing crop yield still exist due to low original SOC levels, and in regions where the excessive N inputs, inappropriate tillage or organic input is inadequate and could be diminished by optimizing BMPs in harmony with site-specific conditions.</p>

OrbView-2 SeaWiFS Global Binned Particulate Organic Carbon (POC) Data, version R2022.0

The SeaWiFS instrument was launched by Orbital Sciences Corporation on the OrbView-2 (a.k.a. SeaStar) satellite in August 1997, and collected data from September 1997 until the end of mission in December 2010. SeaWiFS had 8 spectral bands from 412 to 865 nm. It collected global data at 4 km resolution, and local data (limited onboard storage and direct broadcast) at 1 km. The mission and sensor were optimized for ocean color measurements, with a local noon (descending) equator crossing time orbit, fore-and-aft tilt capability, full dynamic range, and low polarization sensitivity.
