Diptera of Central America: Specimen photos (Diptera) [V2 resource ID = 683]
The Diptera, or true flies, are a huge group of insects that are familiar to most people. Worldwide there are about 153,000 validly described specie of flies, making them about 10% of the known diversity of life. Experts believe that most species of flies still have not been collected or described, however, and if all were known the group could number a million or more. Such an enormous number of species, coupled with their small body size, and the paucity of researchers working on them, makes Diptera one of the true frontiers of systematic research. Flies are found worldwide on every continent, with few species living in Antarctica and with tremendous numbers in tropical regions. There is no analysis comparing the number of species of Diptera from different continents or biogeographical regions, but use of the existing Diptera catalogs (some of which are badly out of date) leads to the impression that the Palearctic (Old World temperate) Region is the area with the most species of flies. This is purely an artifact of research effort, however, with generations of European dipterists working on their local fauna while tropical regions remained virtually untouched. An informal survery of the some of the authors of chapters in the Manual of Central American Diptera reinforces the more logical conclusion that the New World tropics, including Central America, are the most species-rich areas of the world for flies. <p></p>http://phorid.net/zadbi

<p>The dataset contains all relevant data and figures regarding the manuscript "2D Rhenium- and Niobium-Doped WSe2 Photoactive Cathodes in Photo-Enhanced Hybrid Zn-Ion Capacitors".</p> <p>All Figures are in tiff format and all relevant data are in csv formats. </p> <p>The data in csv format are labelled as specified in the corresping images (e.g. Figure 1a csv file corresponds to data used to plot graphs from Figure 1a etc.). </p> <p>Axis labeling and units are always specified at the beginning of individual columns. If more than one curve was plotted from the csv file, the conditions can also be found at the beginning of corresponding columns.</p>

Tel: +46-8-7907813</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>The data files are grouped into the different techniques used to generate them, and refer to the figures/tables in the manuscript where the extracted results are presented. </strong></p> <p> </p> <p><strong>ABSTRACT</strong></p> <p>Cyanine fluorophores are extensively used in fluorescence spectroscopy and imaging. Upon continuous exciation, especially at excitation conditions used in single-molecule and super-resolution experiments, photo-isomerized states of cyanines easily reach population probabilies of around 50%. Still, effects of photo-isomerization are largely ignored in such experiments. Here, we studied the photo-isomerization of the pentamethine Cyanine 5 (Cy5) by two similar, yet complementary means to follow fluorophore blinking dynamics: fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) and transient state (TRAST) excitation-modulation spectroscopy. Additionally, we combined TRAST and spectrofluorimetry (spectral-TRAST), whereby emission spectra of Cy5 were recorded upon different rectangular pulse-train excitations. We also developed a framework for analyzing transitions between multiple emissive states in FCS and TRAST experiments, how the brightness of the different states is weighted, and what initial conditions that apply. Our FCS, TRAST and spectral-TRAST experiments showed significant differences in dark state relaxation amplitudes for different spectral detection ranges, which we attribute to an additional, red-shifted emissive photo-isomerized state of Cy5, not previously considered in FCS and single-molecule experiments. The photo-isomerization kinetics of this state indicate that it is formed under moderate excitation conditions, and its population and emission may thus deserve also more general consideration in fluorescence imaging and spectroscopy experiments.</p>
