Experimental dataset on seed retention rates in a vegetated cover

<p>This repository presents a dataset collected during&nbsp;two&nbsp;experiments aiming at assessing seed retention rates in a vegetated cover located in an experimental channel. The seeds that were used are <em>Rumex crispus</em> seeds. Artificial plants used in the two experiments&nbsp;are <em>Isolepis</em> sp., <em>Buxus</em> sp., and <em>Thuya</em> sp.&nbsp;</p> <p>Experiment 1 provides the&nbsp;data for 2 panels filled with vegetation.</p> <p>Experiment 2 provides the data for X panels filled with vegetation (X comprised between 1 and 8).</p> <p>More information on the collected data are given in the files.</p>

Data from: Greater growth stability of trees in marginal habitats suggests a patchy pattern of population loss and retention in response to increased drought at the rear edge

Species rear range-edges are predicted to retract as climate warms, yet evidence of population persistence is accumulating. Accounting for this disparity is essential to enable prediction and planning for species' range retractions. At the Mediterranean edge of European beech-dominated temperate forest, we tested the hypothesis that individual performance should decline at the limit of the species' ecological tolerance in response to increased drought. We sampled 40 populations in a crossed factor design of geographical and ecological marginality and assessed tree growth resilience and decline in response to recent drought. Drought impacts occurred across the rear edge, but tree growth stability was unexpectedly high in geographically isolated marginal habitat and lower than anticipated in the species' continuous range and better-quality habitat. Our findings demonstrate that, at the rear edge, range shifts will be highly uneven and characterised by reduction in population density with local population retention rather than abrupt range retractions.

Tracking and retention time data from Larus fuscus feeding at Doñana ricefields in Andalusia

<p>1. Non-frugivorous waterbirds disperse a wide variety of plants by endozoochory, providing longer dispersal distances than other mechanisms. Many waterbirds visit both agricultural and natural landscapes during their daily movements, but potential bird-mediated dispersal of weed plants within and from agricultural landscapes to other habitats is commonly overlooked. Gulls (Laridae) are expanding in numbers and increasingly exploiting anthropogenic habitats worldwide, with possible growing implications for the spread of weeds. Yet, to date there are no studies on the spatial distribution of weed dispersal by waterbirds.</p> <p>2. We developed a plant dispersal model based on movements of 19 <i>Larus fuscus</i> using ricefields, via GPS telemetry. We combined daily movements with two curves estimating the retention times (RT) of plant seeds in their guts: 1) an experimental curve based on RT in captivity for four weeds with dry fruits known to be dispersed by gulls: <i>Juncus bufonius</i>, <i>Cyperus difformis</i>, <i>Polypogon monspeliensis</i> and <i>Amaranthus retroflexus</i>; 2) a theoretical curve based on the interspecific scaling relationship between body mass and mean RT.</p> <p>3. Median dispersal distances of weed plant seeds by gulls ranged between 690-940 m, but maximum distances exceeded 100 km. The theoretical RT model showed higher median dispersal distances than the experimental RT model, but lower maxima (131 and 151 km, respectively). Spatial patterns of weed deposition were very similar between RT methods, and most strongly depended on gull movements. Variation between individual gulls had little influence on seed shadows. About 92% of all seeds (&gt;10,000 intact seeds per day) were dispersed within the ricefield area of 370 km2. The remaining 8% of seeds were deposited beyond ricefields into other habitats, 42% of which reached moist environments (other irrigated agriculture, rivers and natural wetlands) presumably suitable for weed establishment.</p> <p>4. <i>Synthesis</i>: Gulls can disperse weed plants over long distances across a mosaic of habitats. This implies exchange of weed plant species between human-dominated and natural areas by waterbirds as dispersal vectors. This spatial study highlights the importance of non-frugivorous birds for long-distance plant dispersal, which is generally an overlooked mechanism in studies aiming to predict and manage expansion of weed plants.</p>

Data from: Platelet GPIIb supports initial pulmonary retention but inhibits subsequent proliferation of melanoma cells during hematogenic metastasis

Platelets modulate the process of cancer metastasis. However, current knowledge on the direct interaction of platelets and tumor cells is mostly based on findings obtained in vitro. We addressed the role of the platelet fibrinogen receptor glycoprotein IIb (integrin αIIb) for experimental melanoma metastasis in vivo. Highly metastatic B16-D5 melanoma cells were injected intravenously into GPIIb-deficient (GPIIb-/-) or wildtype (WT) mice. Acute accumulation of tumor cells in the pulmonary vasculature was assessed in real-time by confocal videofluorescence microscopy. Arrest of tumor cells was dramatically reduced in GPIIb-/- mice as compared to WT. Importantly, we found that mainly multicellular aggregates accumulated in the pulmonary circulation of WT, instead B16-D5 aggregates were significantly smaller in GPIIb-/- mice. While pulmonary arrest of melanoma was clearly dependent on GPIIb in this early phase of metastasis, we also addressed tumor progression 10 days after injection. Inversely, and unexpectedly, we found that melanoma metastasis was now increased in GPIIb-/- mice. In contrast, GPIIb did not regulate local melanoma proliferation in a subcutaneous tumor model. Our data suggest that the platelet fibrinogen receptor has a differential role in the modulation of hematogenic melanoma metastasis. While platelets clearly support early steps in pulmonary metastasis via GPIIb-dependent formation of platelet-tumor-aggregates, at a later stage its absence is associated with an accelerated development of melanoma metastases.

Factors Influence Use Retention of Kios-K Machines Service in Food and Beverages Services

<p><span>Kiosk machines are interactive tablets or touchscreen computers that allow customers to access information and services without direct interaction. By deploying self-service kiosks, businesses can scale their operations faster and more efficiently while reducing costs. The problem in this research is whether the self-service machine Kiosk in fast food service is effective or not and whether it makes all the customers that use it satisfied with the existence of this technology. Not all people, like the boomers or millennials, can adapt and easily use this new technology. Some of the users can do it fast, some are not. The data was collected using Google Forms using Purposive Sampling. It was conducted from February until March 2024. The data were collected from 443 respondents, only 369 of whom had used the Kios-K Machine. The countries that filled it were Indonesia, about 439 people around Jakarta, Depok, Tangerang, Bogor, and Bekasi, a few foreigners, three respondents from Malaysians, and one from the United Kingdom. The research methodology employs Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) through SMART-PLS 4 Software. There are Six variables: Self-efficacy, Trust, Ease of Use, Accessibility, Perceived Value, and Use Retention. The results found that all hypotheses have a significant impact.</span></p>
