Laypeople in Fire Protection: Their Motivation, Their Emotions, Their Value

<p>This online supplement contains a dataset (raw data) collected in a study by the University of Münster, Germany, as well as supplementary study materials, and the online appendix of our paper including additional results. The study is part of a larger research project (<a href="https://www.brawa.ovgu.de/en/">https://www.brawa.ovgu.de/en/</a>) and examined the motivation, emotions, and behavior of laypeople in fire protection.</p><p>Fire events, a specific type of emergency situation, occur regularly and often cost people's lives. Early fire detection and involvement of (trained) laypeople in very early stages is essential, especially in fire-prone historical buildings. In an interview study (N = 25) and a quantification study (N = 238), we examined laypeople's motivation to help, their emotions, and their value – especially regarding behaviors – during fires. In Study 1, based on in-depth interviews using the critical incident technique, we inductively developed three category systems: 1) Key motivators included one's emotional bond to the object, altruism, self-protection, and self-efficacy. 2) Laypeople's emotions, such as stress at first but also calmness, were categorized. 3) We also found that laypeople's primary value during fire incidents was their ability to provide support, e.g., knowledge of the building. In Study 2, we found quantitative support for the findings derived from Study 1. Additionally, we compared laypeople's and experts' assessments and compared reactions depending on fire size. Thus, our research shifts the focus from evacuation to active – and safe – involvement of laypeople. Our results are helpful for executives in emergency management, as they may find value in including laypeople when coping with emergencies.</p><p>The ethics committee of the Faculty of Psychology and Sports Science of the University of Münster approved the studies (under ID 2021-30-MT and ID 2021-14-MT) and we preregistered them with aspredicted.org (available at <a href="https://aspredicted.org/dd2p8.pdf">https://aspredicted.org/dd2p8.pdf</a> and <a href="https://aspredicted.org/m6zh5.pdf">https://aspredicted.org/m6zh5.pdf</a>). Data for "Synapses without Tension Fail to Fire in an In Vitro Network of Hippocampal Neurons."

<p>Neurons in the brain communicate with each other at their synapses. It has long been understood that this communication occurs through biochemical processes. Here, we reveal a previously unrecognized paradigm wherein mechanical tension in neurons is essential for communication. Using <em>in vitro</em> rat hippocampal neurons, we find that (1) neurons become tout/tensed after forming synapses resulting in a contractile neural network, and (2) without this contractility, neurons fail to fire. To measure time evolution of network contractility in 3D (<em>not</em> 2D) extracellular matrix, we developed an ultra-sensitive force sensor with 1 nN resolution. We employed Multi-Electrode Array (MEA) and iGluSnFR, a glutamate sensor, to quantify neuronal firing at the network and at the single synapse scale, respectively. When neuron contractility is relaxed, both techniques show significantly reduced firing. Firing resumes when contractility is restored. This discovery highlights the essential contribution of neural contractility in fundamental brain functions and has implications for our understanding of neuronal physiology.</p>

Fruit and Seed fall in southeast Amazonia following experimental fires

<p>This dataset was used to investigate how wildfires and edge effects affected fruit and seed (FS) production and diversity of a tropical forest. The research was conducted in southeast Amazonia from 2005-2018, using three 50-hectare plots with varying fire regimes: a control plot, a plot burned annually, and a plot burned every three years (with exception of 2008). These plots also experienced edge effects, two droughts, and a blowdown event. The findings indicate that while low-intensity fires alone had a minor impact on FS production, the combined effects of fires, droughts, and windthrow led to significant declines in FS diversity and production. Additionally, the species composition shifted towards trees with acquisitive strategies, characterized by faster growth, thinner leaves and bark, and shorter stature, particularly along the edges of the burned plots. This research highlights the complex interactions between different types of disturbances and their cumulative impact on tropical forest ecosystems</p>

In this relief, Alexander is drunk, and is allowing himself to be tempted by his mistress to carry out a terrible deed, namely, to set fire to the Persians' capital city, Persepolis. Fire Truck

This is a 1941 Indianapolis Fire Department 8-P 750 GPM Fire Truck. This truck was built by hand by Firefighters for Firefighters in the old repair shops in Fountain Square, Indianapolis. Firefighters loved working off these trucks, the oldest one on record was used up until 1968. Service Record: Engine 17 - 12/01/1941. Engine 12 - 12/03/1952. Engine 16 - 10/20/1955. Reserve - 01/10/1966. Sold - 06/16/1969. The truck was 3D scanned by the IUPUI University Library using a Creaform Spark, and Creaform Go Scan 50. Portions of the truck were re-created using reverse engineering methods. Scanning took about a week with a crew of three people. It lasted for over two hours and destroyed an area of downtown Tokyo, killing about 100,000 people. On the other hand, Japan also bombed China and other countries after the Manchurian Incident. Many people were burned, damaged, and lost their lives in air raids. Most of them were civilians, including women, children and the elderly. Old Fire Station, Port of Spain

Strategically located for Port of Spain at the time, the Station was better equipped and manned than previous facilities. The building itself is the first reinforced concrete structure in Port of Spain and is a fine combination of old and new construction technology, blending well with the Red House and Trinity Cathedral with well-articulated quoins and traditional stone markings. The building is well proportioned and functional in design, a central tower providing a lookout over Port of Spain. There is a beautiful rhythm to the fenestration and fire engine doors. The design is tropical allowing good cross ventilation. Internally there is a magnificent cast-iron staircase. Massive trusses with decorative detailing support a slate roof. Data from: Nitrogen deposition suppresses ephemeral post-fire plant diversity

<p>Fire is a dominant force shaping patterns of plant diversity in Mediterranean-type ecosystems. In these biodiversity hotspots, including California's endangered coastal scrub, many species remain hidden belowground as seeds and bulbs, only to emerge and flower when sufficient rainfall occurs after wildfire. The unique adaptations possessed by these species enable survival during prolonged periods of unfavorable conditions, but their continued persistence could be threatened by nonnative plant invasion and environmental change. Furthermore, their fleeting presence aboveground makes evaluating these threats in situ a challenge. For example, nitrogen (N) deposition resulting from air pollution is a well-recognized threat to plant diversity worldwide, but impacts on fire-following species are not well understood. We experimentally evaluated the impact of N deposition on post-fire vegetation cover and richness for three years in stands of coastal sage scrub that had recently burned in a large wildfire in southern California. We installed plots receiving four levels of N addition that corresponded to the range of N deposition rates in the region. We assessed the impact of pre-fire invasion status on vegetation dynamics by including plots in areas that had previously been invaded by nonnative grasses, as well as adjacent uninvaded areas. We found that N addition reduced native forb cover in the second year post-fire while increasing the abundance of nonnative forbs. As is typical in fire-prone ecosystems, species richness declined over the three years of the study. However, N addition hastened this process, and native forb richness was severely reduced under high N availability, especially in previously invaded shrublands. An indicator species analysis also revealed that six functionally and taxonomically diverse forb species were especially sensitive to N addition. Our results highlight a new potential mechanism for the depletion of native species through the suppression of ephemeral post-fire biodiversity.</p>

<p>Upland Sandpipers (<em>Bartramia longicauda</em>) are a grassland obligate shorebird that nests in dense vegetation structure near recently disturbed areas and could benefit from management practices that promote heterogenous vegetation structure. Although, Upland Sandpipers primary breeding range is generally managed for livestock production using traditional practices that lack patchy disturbances to facilitate higher levels of structural heterogeneity. Patch-burn grazing (PBG) could be an alternative management practice for Upland Sandpiper conservation for its ability to create areas of dense vegetation structure near recently disturbed areas. However, limited information is available regarding nest production of Upland Sandpipers within a PBG framework. To assess the compatibility of PBG with Upland Sandpiper conservation, we estimated nest site selection and survival of Upland Sandpiper nests on private lands managed with PBG in the unglaciated plains region of North Dakota. We located 59 nests from 2017–2020. Upland Sandpipers avoided 1 year since fire (YSF) patches and selected for 2 and 3 YSF patches for nest sites. Additionally, nest site selection decreased with increased bare ground and at intermediate distances to the nearest Upland Sandpiper nest. Upland Sandpipers experienced high overall nest survival during the study with 51 of 59 nests successfully hatching, which limited our ability to make inferences between daily survival rates and variables of interest. Our findings suggest that PBG can provide suitable nesting cover for Upland Sandpipers in later YSF patches despite annual prescribed fire and livestock grazing during the nesting season. PBG seems a suitable grassland management strategy that should be included in conservation planning within Upland Sandpiper's breeding distribution.</p>

Putative direct and indirect effects of the environmental variables on fire activity were evaluated through </span><span>structural equation modelling</span><span>.</span></p> <p><span>Results:</span><span> Fire activity increased with net primary productivity, as expected for ecosystems with fuel-limited fire regimes. Soil acidity and the concentration of exchangeable aluminium also increased fire activity, supporting the idea that low fertility promotes plant characteristics that favour fire initiation and spread.</span></p> <p><span>Main</span> <span>conclusions:</span><span> Our research supports a positive relationship between wildfires and low soil fertility in Mediterranean-type climate regions across the globe. Therefore, soil fertility should be incorporated into models predicting future fires in a warming world.</span></p>
