Event-based vision datasets for pedestrian detection in urban scenarios

Datasets supporting the Spiking Perception and processing for Intelligent Detection of pEdestrians on urban Roads (SPIDER) Project. The codebase is available on Gihub at https://github.com/th-nuernberg/spider.

In Project SPIDER, we propose a novel solution for urban road surveillance using event-based neuromorphic cameras (i.e. Dynamic Vision Sensors – DVS), neural algorithms, and embedded neuromorphic computing platforms (i.e. Brainchip Akida). The solution is described by rapid detection and identification of abnormal activities, typically describing roadside pedestrian and bicyclist dynamics.

In order to train the detection system, we decided to use DVS camera events. To also obtain ground truth information we added a traditional CMOS camera on the mount with a preset offset capturing the same field of view. The CMOS frames were only used as support in the labeling process and were not included in the training of the system, the testing, or the evaluation, respectively. We have chosen two locations with different properties of the road, the number of pedestrians and bicyclists, and overall different traffic properties.

The SPIDER project is an award-winning edge solution for the TinyML Vision Zero San Jose Hackathon. Dataset on Scenarios for Urban Emissions and LUE with Increments of Global Warming

This dataset supports the original research article on “Framework for comparing urban emissions and land use efficiency scenarios to avoid increments of global warming” (Kılkış, forthcoming).

A total of 28 datasheets are involved in this dataset that is organised into four main domains as follows:

The first domain with 3 datasheets contains urban emissions data for three urban emissions scenarios (SSP1-1.9, SSP1-2.6, and SSP1-RE) on an annual basis. The data is summed to obtain cumulative urban emissions between 2020 and 2050 per urban area for 465 urban areas.

The second domain with 9 datasheets provides the quantification of the original parameter on contributions to increments of global warming based on cumulative urban emissions data for three urban emissions scenarios (SSP1-1.9, SSP1-2.6, and SSP1-RE) between 2020 and 2050. The best estimate of the transient climate response to cumulative carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions (TCRE) and its 5-95th percentile range are considered within the quantifications of this analysis.

The third domain with 4 datasheets has the annual CO2 sequestration penalties of four land use efficiency scenarios (LUE 5%, LUE 15%, LUE Av, and LUE Best). Data is summed for cumulative CO2 sequestration penalties between 2020 and 2050 per urban area for 135 urban areas.

The fourth domain with 12 datasheets contains the quantification of the original parameter on contributions to increments of global warming based on CO2 sequestration penalties for four land use efficiency scenarios (LUE 5%, LUE 15%, LUE Av, and LUE Best) between 2020 and 2050. The analysis is based on the best estimate of TCRE as well as its 5-95th percentile range.

The data structure is described in the information sheet and the 28 datasheets contain 292,100 cells in total. The method and results that utilise the data are described in the original article submitted to Energy. Data from: Effects of mixing litter on decomposition under three exposure scenarios

The effect of mixing litter on decomposition has received considerable attention in terrestrial and aquatic (but rarely in both) ecosystems, with a striking lack of consensus in the obtained results. We studied the decomposition of a mixture of poplar and alder in three terrestrial:aquatic exposures to determine (1) if the effect of mixing litter on mass loss, associated decomposers (fungal biomass, sporulation rates, and richness) and detritivores (abundance, biomass, and richness of invertebrate shredders) differs between the stream (fully aquatic exposure) and when litter is exposed to a period of terrestrial exposure prior to immersion and (2) the effect of the mixture across exposure scenarios. The effect of the mixture was additive on mass loss and synergistic on decomposers and detritivores across exposure scenarios. Within scenarios, mass loss and decomposers showed synergistic effects only in the fully aquatic exposure, detritivores showed synergistic effects only when the period of terrestrial was shorter than the period of aquatic exposure, and when the period of terrestrial was equal to the period of aquatic exposure the effect of the mixture was additive on mass loss, decomposers, and detritivores. The species-specific effects also differed among exposure scenarios. Alder affected poplar only when there was a period of terrestrial exposure, with increased sporulation rates and fungal richness in exposure 25:75, and increased mass loss in exposure 50:50. Poplar affected alder only under fully aquatic exposure, with increased mass loss. In conclusion, the synergistic effects of the mixture changed with a period of terrestrial exposure prior to immersion. These results provide a cross-boundary perspective on the effect of mixing litter, showing a legacy effect of exposure to terrestrial decomposition on the fate of plant litter in aquatic ecosystems and highlighting the importance of assessing the effect of mixing litter on the associated biota and not only on mass loss.

Dataset for Nigeria clean cooking scenarios and impacts study

This is the dataset and tool used for analysis in the journal article

Yetano Roche, M. et al., (2024). Towards clean cooking energy for all in Nigeria: Pathways and impacts. Energy Strategy Reviews, 53, 101366,
https://doi.org/10.1016/j.esr.2024.101366

Abstract:

Over 175 million Nigerians rely on the use of traditional biomass for cooking, and it is estimated that more than 128,000 people died in Nigeria in 2019 from household air pollution related to these fuels. There is currently a gap in the study of possible pathways to meet Nigeria's goals in clean cooking and in understanding the health and climate impacts that different pathways can bring about. We explore clean cooking access scenarios for Nigeria until 2060 under a business-as-usual scenario, a moderate climate mitigation scenario, and an ambitious transformative scenario. We carry out a disaggregation at the state level for the period up to 2030 to better guide shorter-term policy development. Our analysis shows that under an ambitious scenario where 85 million households achieve access to clean cooking by 2060, annual premature deaths due to exposure to household air pollution would decrease by 7 % compared to 2018 levels. A baseline scenario, on the other hand, sees a dramatic 77 % increase, resulting in 209,000 people dying prematurely, of which 94,000 children under 5. Furthermore, we find that woodfuel removals from forestland would lead to a tripling of carbon dioxide emissions from land use change, reaching 602 Mt CO2 by 2060. Our findings stress the vital importance of a clean cooking transition in Nigeria and underline the urgent need for immediate acceleration in national efforts regarding access to clean cooking for all.

Keywords: Clean cooking; Climate change; Health; Long-term scenarios; Net-zero; Nigeria
