Perspectives of Persons with Physical Impairments: Issues of Accessibility of Transportation Systems for Effective Inclusion in the English-Speaking Regions of Cameroon

<p>The paper investigated the adaptation for accessibility of transportation systems for effective inclusion of persons with physical disabilities in the English- speaking regions of Cameroon. Specifically, the article seeks to find out the impact of priority seating arrangement, the impact of audio-visual tactile information service, the impact of accessible parking and the provision of emergency evacuation plans on effective inclusion of persons with physical disabilities in the English-Speaking &nbsp; Regions of Cameroon. Literature was reviewed conceptually, theoretically and empirically. Using exploratory research design, the study sample 12 persons with physical disabilities, using an interview guide and observational check-list. Therefore, the study made use of qualitative data. The qualitative data was analyzed thematically, using themes and sample quotations. The findings showed that the current priority seating system in public transportation within the participants' community fails to provide an inclusive and accessible experience for individuals with physical, visual, and hearing impairments. Also, the findings from this research indicate that the lack of accessible and inclusive audio-visual tactile information in the public transportation systems of the English-Speaking Regions of Cameroon presents significant barriers to the full and equal participation of persons with physical disabilities. Moreover, the results of this study show that accessible parking impact effective inclusion of persons with physical disabilities in the English-Speaking Regions of Cameroon. Finally, the findings indicate a concerning lack of adequate emergency evacuation plans and procedures that consider the needs and safety of individuals with physical disabilities in the transportation infrastructure of the region. It was therefore, concluded that the adaptation for accessibility of transportation systems had a high effect on the inclusion of persons with physical disabilities in the English- speaking regions of Cameroon. Based on this, it is suggested thattransport providers should enhance the Priority Seating System; implement clear and visible markings for priority seating areas in public transportation vehicles, ensure that priority seating is designed with the specific needs of individuals with physical, visual, and hearing impairments in mind, such as providing adjustable and ergonomic seating options and develop and enforce policies that mandate the proper use of priority seating and promote a culture of respect and awareness among passengers.</p>

ACCESS-ESM-1.5 net-zero emissions 1000-year long simulations: Seasonal temperature and precipitation gridded data with area-average timeseries of temperature, precipitation and sea ice data

<p>NetCDF files used in analysis shown in King et al. (2024) https://egusphere.copernicus.org/preprints/2024/egusphere-2023-2961/.</p> <p>Seasonal-average mapped 1.5 metre air temperature temperature data are in NetCDFs with "fld_s03i236" in their name. These files are for boreal summer "JJA" or boreal winter "DJF". The "B20__" represents the start year of the net-zero emissions simulation from which these data are drawn. These files each have 1000 time-steps and the data are in native resolution of ACCESS-ESM-1.5: 1.875 degrees longitude by 1.25 degrees latitude.</p> <p>Seasonally-averaged precipitation rate (kg/m2/s) data are in NetCDFs with "fld_s05i216" in their name. Seasons and simulation information follow the same format as the temperature files.</p> <p>The file "ts_gwl.nc" includes several timeseries used in the paper including global-average SST ("TEMP_SURFACE"), global mean ocean temperature ("TEMP_GLOBAL"), and March/September Arctic ("ICEN") and Antarctic ("ICES") sea ice extent.</p> <p>The scripts used to make the Figures are included and run using IDL version 9.0.&nbsp;</p> <p>For any advice on using these files please feel free to contact me: andrew.king@unimelb.edu.au.</p>

Austrian Science Fund (FWF) Open Access Compliance Monitoring 2020

<p><strong>I. Executive summary</strong></p> <p>The Austrian Science Fund (FWF), which is Austria&#39;s main funding organisation for basic research, encourages and helps all project leaders and project staff members to make their peer-reviewed research results freely available on the Internet. Any exceptions must be clearly indicated and justified. For projects that started after 1 January 2015, open access has been compulsory for all peer-reviewed publications. All principal investigators in FWF-funded projects are obliged to submit a final report within four months of completing their projects.</p> <p>In 2020, a total of 483 final reports were submitted to the FWF, 32 of which could not report any publications so far. The publications and other data mentioned in those reports are archived and analysed by the FWF. This report examines the state of compliance with open access requirements for peer-reviewed publications on the basis of final project reports submitted in the year 2020.</p> <p>2020 shows a significant decline in the number of publications compared to 2019. This decline can be explained by the fact that 15% fewer final project reports were received as a result of weaker funding years in the mid-2010s as well as an increased shift of final report submissions from 2020 to later points in time (&lsquo;corona effect&rsquo;). Especially in the programmes with the highest number of publications (Doctoral Programmes, Special Research Programmes) as well as in programmes with many projects (Stand-Alone Projects, International Projects), there were fewer final project reports submitted, which has a massive impact on the total number of publications. It must be taken into account that the method (recording the number of publications via final project reports) is a look into the past, as the final project reports show publications that were produced in previous years during the project term. The publication activity in relation to the year of publication itself is relatively constant according to databases such as Dimensions. Due to the automation of the monitoring processes and the introduction of Plan S of cOAlition S, the category of &lsquo;Other open access&rsquo; (self-archiving in a non-maintained repository, homepage, or archiving of preprints), which was previously determined manually, is no longer taken into account, and thus the open access share of peer-reviewed publications has decreased compared to previous years.</p> <p>Main findings:</p> <p>-A total of 6,196 publications were listed in the final project reports submitted in 2020.</p> <p>-Of those publications, 4,809 were conclusively identified as peer-reviewed.</p> <p>-Regarding compliance with the FWF&#39;s Open Access Policy, the analysis shows that 84% of the peer-reviewed publications listed in the final project reports submitted in 2020 were openly accessible (2015: 83%, 2016: 92%, 2017: 90%, 2018: 92%, 2019: 89%).</p> <p>-The most frequently chosen option was hybrid open access (40%). The share of old open access was 21%, the share of green open access 23%, and no open access 16%.</p> <p>-The majority of peer-reviewed publications submitted were journal articles (89%), 88% of which were openly accessible.</p> <p>-The lowest rate of compliance with the FWF&#39;s Open Access Policy could be found in editions, contributions to edited volumes, and monographs (38%).</p> <p>-The absolute number of publications listed in final reports in 2020 included 362 publications that were mentioned several times in different projects; however, those repetitions did not ultimately affect the relative share of open access publications (83%).</p> <p><strong>II. Bias</strong></p> <p>Most of the publications were submitted to the FWF via a research documentation system (provided by &copy;Researchfish), in which FWF-funded researchers are able to enter and update their research data on an ongoing basis. The last check of the open access status was performed in March 2020. In some cases, the embargo period may have already expired, and publications labelled &lsquo;no open access&rsquo; in the FWF&rsquo;s database may now be accessible through green open access.</p> <p>Whenever the status &lsquo;peer-reviewed&rsquo; could not be clearly identified according to the FWF&rsquo;s guidelines, the publications were classified as non-peer reviewed.</p> <p>Openly available non-peer reviewed publications were entered as &#39;openly available&rsquo;.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

1998 World Cup Website Access Logs

<p><strong>Description:</strong></p> <p>The access logs, as well as the accompanying description,&nbsp;are directly taken from [1] and&nbsp;include traffic of the&nbsp;1998 World Cup website on three days as follows.&nbsp;The log files have the following naming format &quot;wc_dayX_Y.gz&quot;</p> <p>where:</p> <ul> <li>X is an integer that represents the day the access log was collected</li> <li>Y is an integer that represents the subinterval for a particular day</li> </ul> <p>This collection includes <em>three</em> log files containing the access traffic on three different days as listed below:</p> <pre><a>wc_day25_1.gz</a> May 20, 1998 -&gt; TR1 <a>wc_day9_1.gz</a> May 4, 1998 -&gt; TR2 <a>wc_day28_1.gz</a> May 23, 1998 -&gt; TR3</pre> <p><strong>Format</strong></p> <p>The access logs from the 1998 World Cup Web site were originally in the Common Log Format. In order to reduce both the size of the logs and the analysis time the access logs were converted to a binary format (big endian = network order). Each entry in the binary log is a fixed size and represents a single request to the site. The format of a request in the binary log looks like:</p> <pre>struct request { uint32_t timestamp; uint32_t clientID; uint32_t objectID; uint32_t size; uint8_t method; uint8_t status; uint8_t type; uint8_t server; };</pre> <p>The fields of the request structure contain the following information:</p> <p><em>timestamp&nbsp;</em>- the time of the request, stored as the number of seconds since the Epoch. The timestamp has been converted to GMT to allow for portability. During the World Cup the local time was 2 hours ahead of GMT (+0200). In order to determine the local time, each timestamp must be adjusted by this amount.</p> <p><em>clientID&nbsp;</em>- a unique integer identifier for the client that issued the request (this may be a proxy); due to privacy concerns these mappings cannot be released; note that each clientID maps to exactly one IP address, and the mappings are preserved across the entire data set - that is if IP address 0.0.0.0 mapped to clientID X on day Y then any request in any of the data sets containing clientID X also came from IP address 0.0.0.0</p> <p><em>objectID</em>&nbsp;- a unique integer identifier for the requested URL; these mappings are also 1-to-1 and are preserved across the entire data set</p> <p><em>size</em>&nbsp;- the number of bytes in the response</p> <p><em>method</em>&nbsp;- the method contained in the client&#39;s request (e.g., GET).</p> <p><em>status</em>&nbsp;- this field contains two pieces of information; the 2 highest order bits contain the HTTP version indicated in the client&#39;s request (e.g., HTTP/1.0); the remaining 6 bits indicate the response status code (e.g., 200 OK).</p> <p><em>type</em>&nbsp;- the type of file requested (e.g., HTML, IMAGE, etc), generally based on the file extension (.html), or the presence of a parameter list (e.g., &#39;?&#39; indicates a DYNAMIC request). If the url ends with &#39;/&#39;, it is considered a DIRECTORY.</p> <p><em>server</em>&nbsp;- indicates which server handled the request. The upper 3 bits indicate which region the server was at (e.g., SANTA CLARA, PLANO, HERNDON, PARIS); the remaining bits indicate which server at the site handled the request. Effects of dimethyl sulfide pertubations in ACCESS-UKCA climate simulations

<p>This dataset includes 10-year averages of cloud, radiation, precipitation and aerosol/chemistry fields from the Australian Community Climate and Earth System Simulator (ACCESS) United Kingdom Chemistry and Aerosol (UKCA) model. This model includes a sophisticated chemistry and aerosol scheme GLOMAP-mode (Mann et al. 2012). The model runs were used to evaluate cloud, radiation and precipitation of this model and to quantify the role of dimethyl sulfide in the global climate system.</p> <p>Simulations were run from 2000-2009, including a control run and two experimental runs that look at the climate response to large changes in oceanic dimethyl sulfide (DMS).</p> <p>The horizontal grid resolution is 1.25 degree latitude, 1.85 degree longitude, with 85 vertical levels, SSTs and sea ice were prescribed to AMIP SSTs and the model was nudged to ERA-Interim. Emissions were prescribed to ACCMIP pre-2000, and RCP6.0 post 2000.</p> <p>Three simulations were performed where the oceanic surface concentrations of DMS were altered:</p> <ul> <li>&nbsp;Control -- a control run using the Lana et al. (2011) oceanic DMS data set</li> <li>&nbsp;zero_DMS -- a run in which oceanic dimethyl sulfide is removed (set to zero)</li> <li>&nbsp;max_DMS -- a run in which oceanic dimethyl sulfide is set to its latitudinal maximum.</li> </ul> <p>A detailed description of the model and the experimental set up can be found in Fiddes et al. 2018</p> <p>The model simulations were run on the National Computing Infrastructure (NCI) facilities. Python 2.7 was used to do the analysis of model output.</p> <p>The simulations and analysis were performed by Sonya Fiddes as part of her PhD with the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate System Science research program: &quot;The effects of tropical convection on Australia&#39;s climate&quot;.</p>

Assessing Urban Green Space Accessibility in Amsterdam

This was made as part of an MSc Earth Sciences thesis aimed at assessing UGS and heat exposure in Amsterdam. The thesis is based on the idea that UGS function as cool spaces within the urban heat island of the city, and thus provides lower temperatures to urban residents, specifically during hot summer months, therefore reducing the risk of heat stress and heat-related illnesses and morbidity.</p>

'Opening the Future' - a new funding model for open-access monographs: introducing an innovative approach to publishing OA books through library membership funding

<p>We showcase a collaborative pilot case study that implements an innovative open access revenue model at the Central European University Press and Liverpool University Press, with assistance from the COPIM Project (Community-led Open Publication Infrastructures for Monographs). Building on existing library subscription models (e.g. OBP, punctum), this is a sustainable OA publishing model that gives library members access to a highly-regarded backlist, with the membership fees then used to make the frontlist openly accessible.<br> Given the current global library environment and existing budget pressures that have been exacerbated by Covid-19, a consortial model of funding promises a cost-effective solution for OA that means no single institution bears a disproportionate burden. This model, then, appeals to both those who wish to pay for subscription-access content (more traditional university acquisition models) and those who support OA initiatives. It brings many institutions together under one roof for an affordable route to open access books.<br> Library members get access to a selection of the publishers&rsquo; backlists, DRM free and with perpetual access after three years. In return, the membership revenue is used to make newly-published books openly accessible to anyone with an internet connection.<br> We believe Opening the Future is a trailblazer in scholarly comms, offering a viable and affordable route to OA change for small/medium university presses and which appeals to libraries of all sizes and budgets. We aim to open up research for the public good. The model that we are piloting reduces inequalities in access to open access publication by eradicating exclusionary book processing charges (BPCs).<br> As we progress with the pilot, we are writing up everything we&rsquo;ve done to implement the model and will release this and any software as a free toolkit, so that other publishers can use it and also take the leap.</p>

Development of the multi-dimensional Mobility Divide Index as a methodology to assess the accessibility level of public transport systems

<p>This paper presents the development of a multi-dimensional Mobility Divide Index (MDI) for assessing the accessibility of public transport developed using a co-design approach, directly involving end-users in the index design process. The index measures the gap that persons with disabilities feel they need to over-come to use public transport in the same way non-disabled citizens do. The MDI covers six accessibility-related dimensions: 1) safety, 2) convenience, 3) comfort, 4) affordability, 5) travel time, 6) autonomy. The method paper describes&nbsp; the step-by-step approach to create the MDI as a set of indicators to be rated by people with different access needs to a) provide evidence of the main criticalities to be addressed through the design and implementation of new inclusive mobility solutions, b) guide the design of new inclusive mobility solutions and measure their impacts and c) inform the transport sector encouraging positive changes in transport by providing recommendations for policy-making, new directions for service innovation, improvements and practical advice or highlighting investment priorities to pave the way for a more inclusive mobility. We present our findings in ways that can inform universal design and provide actionable information to researchers, policymakers, transport and urban planners, operators and stakeholders&rsquo; representatives to promote inclusive and equitable mobility solutions for all. Finally, we suggest follow up research and innovation, as well as recommendations for its uptake and utilisation in the pursuit of European accessibility standards and requirements for products and services in the mobility sector.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Tomato domestication history has been revealed to be a highly complex story. A major contributor to this complexity is an evolutionary intermediate group (Solanum lycopersicum var. cerasiforme (Alef.) Voss; SLC) between the cultivated tomato (Solanum lycopersicum var. lycopersicum L.; SLL) and its wild relative (Solanum pimpinellifolium L.; SP). SLC includes accessions with a broad spectrum of genomic and phenotypic characteristics. Some of the SLC accessions were previously hypothesized to be spreading northward from South America into Mesoamerica and that migration probably entailed reversal to wild-like phenotypes such as smaller fruits. Prior to this study, the northernmost confirmed extension of the SLC was limited to northern Mexico. In this study, we employed genomic methods to investigate the origin of a wild-like tomato found in a garden in Scottsdale Arizona, USA. The so-called "Arizona tomato" featured a vigorous growth habit and carried small fruits weighing 2-3 grams. Our phylogenomic analyses revealed the identity of the Arizona tomato as a member of the Mexican SLC population (SLC MEX). To our knowledge, this is the first report of an SLC accession, confirmed using genomics, growing spontaneously in Arizona. This finding could have implications for conservation biology as well as agriculture.</p>
