Data archive for Towards understanding potential atmospheric contributions to abrupt climate changes: characterizing changes to the North Atlantic eddy-driven jet over the last deglaciation

<p>This archive contains simulated North Atlantic eddy-driven jet latitude and tilt data generated using the PlaSim model to accompany Andres and Tarasov (Climate of the Past, accepted), DOI: https://doi.org/10.5194/cp-15-1-2019.</p> <p>Paper abstract is as follows:</p> <p>&quot;Abrupt climate shifts of large amplitudes were common features of the Earth&rsquo;s climate as it transitioned into and out of the last full glacial state approximately 20 000<br> years ago, but their causes are not yet established. Midlatitude atmospheric dynamics may have played an important role in these climate variations through their effects on heat and precipitation distributions, sea ice extent, and wind-driven ocean circulation patterns. This study characterizes deglacial winter wind changes over the North Atlantic (NAtl) in a suite of transient deglacial simulations using the PlaSim Earth system model (run at T42 resolution) and the TraCE-<br> 21ka (T31) simulation. Though driven with yearly updates in surface elevation, we detect multiple instances of NAtl jet transitions in the PlaSim simulations that occur within 10<br> simulation years and a sensitivity of the jet to background climate conditions. Thus, we suggest that changes to the NAtl jet may play an important role in abrupt glacial climate changes.</p> <p>We identify two types of simulated wind changes over the last deglaciation. Firstly, the latitude of the NAtl eddy-driven jet shifts northward over the deglaciation in a sequence of distinct steps. Secondly, the variability in the NAtl jet gradually shifts from a Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) state with a strongly preferred jet latitude and a restricted latitudinal range to one with no single preferred latitude and a range that is at least 11 ◦ broader. These changes can significantly affect ocean circulation. Changes to the position of the NAtl jet alter the location of the wind forcing driving oceanic surface gyres and the limits of sea ice extent, whereas a shift to a more variable jet reduces the effectiveness of the wind forcing at driving surface ocean transports.</p> <p>The processes controlling these two types of changes differ on the upstream and downstream ends of the NAtl eddy-driven jet. On the upstream side over eastern North America, the elevated ice sheet margin acts as a barrier to the winds in both the PlaSim simulations and the TraCE-21ka experiment. This constrains both the position and the latitudinal variability in the jet at LGM, so the jet shifts in sync with ice sheet margin changes. In contrast, the downstream side over the eastern NAtl is more sensitive to the thermal state of the background climate. Our results suggest that the presence of an elevated ice sheet margin in the south-eastern sector of the North American ice complex strongly constrains the deglacial position of the jet over eastern North America and the western North Atlantic as well as its variability.&quot;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Raw GCM data can be made available upon request.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>The processed data is saved as numpy arrays. For each sensitivity test detailed in Salazar &amp; Wordsworth, 2024, the GCM data was processed by taking surface temperature and surface pressure output and phase folding the data so that the substellar point is the origin of longitudes. Full details are available in the paper.</p>

PAPILA: High resolution inventory of atmospheric emissions in Latin America.

<p><strong>Brief description</strong></p> <p>PAPILA dataset is a collection of annual emission inventories of reactive gases (CO, NMVOC, SO2, NH3, NOx), Greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4), and particles (PM25, PM10, BC, OC) from anthropogenic sources in South America, for the period 2014&ndash;2020. Here is presented PAPILA version 2.0, The first version of this inventory is available <a href="https://data.mendeley.com/datasets/btf2mz4fhf/3">here.</a></p> <p>PAPILA is&nbsp;the first AEI from anthropogenic sources covering the continental SA region, which combines local available information with a global database in a proper and rigorous way. For this purpose, global datasets were used as a basis, enriching it with locally developed inventories available in the literature until 2023 for Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Ecuador.</p> <p>The Dataset consider emissions from 13 sectors&nbsp; which are organized and denominated inspired mostly on the nomenclature given by CAMS: thermal power plants (ENE);&nbsp; road transportation (TRO); non-road transportation (TNR); fugitive emissions (FEF); industries, including fuel consumption in manufacturing industries and construction industrial processes, (IND); solvents (SLV); refineries (REF); agricultural soils (AGS); agricultural livestock (AGL); domestic and international navigation (SHP); solid waste disposal&nbsp; &nbsp;(including solid waste, wastewater, and incineration) (SWD); open biomass burning (OBB); residential , commercial and other sectors (RCO)</p> <p>To consult the main methodological considerations , review the methodological document available for download</p> <p>This inventory should contribute to the design of policies that seek to mitigate climate change and improve air quality by providing policy makers, stakeholders and scientists with qualified scientific spatial explicit emission information</p> <p><strong>Metadata</strong></p> <p>The inventories are presented as netCDF4 files, one for each year and specie, gridded&nbsp; in WGS84 projection (lon-lat) with a spatial resolution of 0.1∘&thinsp;&times;&thinsp;0.1∘ covering the domain 32&ndash;120∘&thinsp;W and 34∘&thinsp;N&ndash;58∘&thinsp;S.</p> <p>Each file contains 14 variables corresponding to the emissions in Tg&thinsp;yr&minus;1 from the13 sectors estimated and the sum of all categories (SUM)</p>

Reproduction package for the paper: "The overflowing atmosphere of WASP-121 b"

<p>Supplementary Material for the paper "The overflowing atmosphere of WASP-121 b: High-resolution He i 10833 transmission spectroscopy with VLT/CRIRES+" by Czesla et al. (2024).</p> <p>The material is related to the 3D modeling part of the paper (Sect. 3.5), specifically focused on the atmospheric escape simulations and radiative transfer calculations for the exoplanet WASP-121 b.</p> <p>We provide the results of the 3D hydrodynamic simulation with Athena++, with key files including the input file and a snapshot of the simulation after 8 orbits.<br>Post-processing is done with a radiation transfer code located in the folder "post-process_W121b". This code, based on MacLeod &amp; Oklopcic (2022), generates synthetic spectra for two density scenarios (scaling factors 0.5 and 1.0) and has been modified for accurate calculations in high density regions. A Jupyter notebook in the same folder illustrates how to analyze the data and generate the corresponding figures.</p> <p>Detailed descriptions can be found in the README.txt file.</p>

Code and Data for Sturm and Silva (2024) A nudge to the truth: atom conservation as a hard constraint in models of atmospheric composition using an uncertainty-weighted correction

<p>This record contains the Julia photochemical model (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.13385541) output in csv format used for training XGBoost in ProjectionConservationRF.py to emulate ozone photochemical formation. Nonphysical predictions that violate conservation of atoms are corrected using a closed-form, constrained least-squares approach that factors in uncertainty and scale using species-level weights. MASCS 1.0: Synchronous atmospheric and oceanic data from a cross-shaped moored array in the northern South China Sea during 2014–2015

<p>This work presents a cross-shaped moored array dataset (MASCS 1.0) comprising five buoys and four moorings with synchronous atmospheric and oceanic data in the northern South China Sea during 2014&ndash;2015. The atmospheric data are observed by two meteorological instruments at the buoys. The oceanic data consist of sea surface waves measured using a wave recorder, temperature, and salinity from the surface to a depth of 400 m, and at 10 and 50 m above the ocean bottom using conductivity, temperature, and depth recorders. It also includes currents from the surface to a depth of 850 m measured using acoustic Doppler current profilers and measured at 10, 50, and 100 m above the floor using current meters. Additional measurements were taken for sea surface radiation, air visibility, chlorophyll, turbidity, and chromophoric dissolved organic matter at buoy 3, located at the center of the moored array. The data reveals air&ndash;sea interactions and oceanic processes in the upper and bottom ocean, especially the transition of the air&ndash;sea interface and ocean conditions from summer to winter monsoon and the effects of six tropical cyclones on the moored array. Multiscale processes were also recorded, such as air&ndash;sea fluxes, tides, internal waves, and low-frequency flows. The data are valuable and have many potential applications, including analyzing the phenomena and mechanisms of air&ndash;sea interactions and ocean dynamics and validating and improving numerical model simulations, data reanalysis, and assimilations.</p>
