Point Frame Measurements of Moss and Vascular Frequencies Under Increasing N Deposition Over Five Years, 2011-2015
Development of the oil sands has led to increasing atmospheric N deposition, with values as high as 17 kg N ha-1 yr-1; regional background levels <2 kg N ha-1 yr-1. Bogs, being ombrotrophic, may be especially susceptible to increasing N deposition. To examine responses to N deposition, over five years, we experimentally applied N (as NH4NO3) to a bog near Mariana Lakes, Alberta, at rates of 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 kg N ha-1 yr-1, plus controls (no water or N addition). Anchored point frames were established at each plot and measure at 30 points along the frame each year in July. We used absolute frequencies of Sphagna and vascular plants to examine species and community responses to N treatment. Increasing N input led to decreased frequency of S. fuscum in the third through fifth year of N addition (Fig. 10A) and an increased frequency of S. magellanicum in the second through fifth year of N addition Dominant shrubs, all shrubs, and all vascular plant species frequencies generally increased with increasing N input, with those increases all significant in 2013-2015 (Fig. 10 G-I). Water addition alone had no significant effect on the frequency of vascular plant species or groups in any of the five years (p >= 0.12). At Mariana Lakes Bog, we observed changes in vegetation even at low experimental N loadings, with vegetation progressively changing over the 5 years of the study (Figs. 10,11). These results suggest that bogs that have persisted under very low ambient N deposition may be especially sensitive to increasing N deposition, in terms of plant species relative abundances and plant community composition.
Point Frame Measurements of Poor Fen Moss and Vascular Frequencies Under Increasing N Deposition Over Five Years, 2011-2015
Development of the oil sands has led to increasing atmospheric N deposition, with values as high as 17 kg N ha-1 yr-1; regional background levels <2 kg N ha-1 yr-1. To examine responses to N deposition, over five years, we experimentally applied N (as NH4NO3) to a poor fen near Mariana Lake, Alberta, at rates of 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 kg N ha-1 yr-1, plus controls (no water or N addition). Anchored point frames were established at each plot and measure at 30 points along the frame each year in July. We used absolute frequencies of Sphagna and vascular plants to examine species and community responses to N treatment. Increasing N input led to led to decreased abundance of S. fuscum and increased abundance of S. angustifolium, S. magellanicum, Andromeda polifolia, Vaccinium oxycoccos, and of vascular plants in general. For dominant shrubs and all vascular species combined, N addition had no effect in the first two years, but frequencies increased with increasing N addition in 2013-2015. Pairwise year comparisons indicated a gradual change in plant species composition as the experiment progressed. Of the 21 pairwise comparisons between nominal N treatments, 18 were significant, indicating a clear influence of N addition on plant community composition. These results suggest that bogs that have persisted under very low ambient N deposition may be especially sensitive to increasing N deposition, in terms of plant species’ relative abundances and plant community composition.
Substrate and cover types on the stream bottom determined by point transects for streams near the Toolik Field Station, Alaska, for 2010.
The Changing Seasonality of Arctic Stream Systems (CSASN) was active from 2010 to 2012. The CSASN goal was to quantify the relative influences of through flow, lateral inputs, and hyporheic regeneration on the seasonal fluxes C, N, and P in an arctic river network, and to determine how these influences might shift under seasonal conditions that are likely to be substantially different in the future. Point transects were done throughout the sampling season to determine different substrate and cover types on the stream bottom.

Avian point count data from the Ice Storm Experiment (ISE) plots
Large-scale disturbances such as ice storms may increase in frequency and intensity as climate changes. While disturbances are a natural component of forest ecosystems, climatically driven alteration to historical patterns may impart fundamental change to ecosystem function. At Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, NH, experimental ice storms of varying severity were applied to replicate plots of mature northern hardwoods to quantify their effects on forested ecosystems. We assessed ice storm treatment effects on insectivorous foliage-gleaning birds and their interactions with larval Lepidoptera. These birds are charismatic, of conservation concern, and are a major predator of caterpillars. In turn, lepidopterans are the dominant herbivores in temperate forests and are integral to ecosystem function. We predicted that avian abundance would increase due to additional structural heterogeneity caused by ice treatments, with a concomitant increase in caterpillar predation. Point counts were used to measure insectivorous bird activity in the ice storm experiment plots and additional control plots before and after treatments. Point counts were conducted in June 2015 and June 2016. Icing occurred in January-February 2016. We deployed and retrieved plasticine model caterpillars and estimated predation from characteristic marks to these surrogates. Abundance of foliage-gleaning birds was higher in the ice storm plots and birds responded to treatments as a single diffuse disturbance rather than on an individual plot level. All species except one were observed both before and after the ice treatments. Surprisingly, predation on caterpillar models was unaffected by ice storm treatments but rather was a function of caterpillar density. The increase in avian abundance in the ice storm treatment plots corroborates other studies of bird responses to relatively small-scale disturbances in forests and the limited change in species composition was expected given the plot size. We conclud

Point-Quarter Harvested Plant Weight Measurements to Estimate Shrub ANPP in a Chihuahuan Desert Creosote Shrubland at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (2007- present)
In an effort to better quantify NPP of Creosotebush in the Five-Points region, it was decided to test the Point-Quarter method against the standard 1-m2 quadrat method that has been in use since 1998. Transects were laid out across the 5 mammal trapping webs as well as across burned and unburned plots of the Mixed Shrub site (MS). Repeat measures of the same bushes are performed seasonally. Whole shrubs of various size classes are collected and sorted and weighed to develop regressions for biomass.
SGS-LTER Ecosystem Stress Area - long-term point-frame (percent basal cover) dataset following nutrient enrichment stress on the Central Plains Experimental Range in Nunn, Colorado, USA 1982-2011, ARS Study Number 3
This data package was produced by researchers working on the Shortgrass Steppe Long Term Ecological Research (SGS-LTER) Project, administered at Colorado State University. Long-term datasets and background information (proposals, reports, photographs, etc.) on the SGS-LTER project are contained in a comprehensive project collection within the Digital Collections of Colorado (http://digitool.library.colostate.edu/R/?func=collections&collection_id=3429). The data table and associated metadata document, which is generated in Ecological Metadata Language, may be available through other repositories serving the ecological research community and represent components of the larger SGS-LTER project collection. Water, nitrogen, and water-plus-nitrogen at levels beyond the range normally experience by shortgrass steppe communities were applied from 1971 through 1975, plant densities were sampled through 1977, and then sampling resumed in 1982, with sampling frequencies changing from annually to every other year. The initial sampling from 1970 to 1974 showed that the water and water plus nitrogen treatments had the strongest effect on plant community structure, both treatments increased biomass, and exotic weed species were noted on the water plus nitrogen treatment. Later sampling from 1982 to 1991 showed a ten-fold increase in exotic weed species on the water plus nitrogen plots as compared to the controls (Milchunas and Lauenroth 1995), a community change that has persisted on this site due to a chronic elevation of soil nitrogen caused by a plant tissue/soil organic matter feedback mechanism (Vinton and Burke 1995). In 1998, Six new treatments were superimposed on the historic study site. The six new treatments were: control, sugar, lignin, sawdust, lignin and sugar, and sawdust and sugar. In 2010, plots will be sampled every 5 years. Our objective in this study is to examine how plant communities change through time and explore implications of these changes for monitoring
Wave and turbidity measurements, Fowling Point, Hog Island Bay, VA, Summer 2016
Time series of turbidity, water surface elevation, wave height and period, current, and water temperature were measured at sites along a bay-to-marsh transect along the east-facing margin of Fowling Point, Hog Island Bay, VA in summer 2016. The measurements were made to characterize suspended sediment concentrations in the water inundating Fowling Point marsh during high tides and storms, as a proxy for the availability of sediment for wetland accretion. The time series includes a spring-neap cycle and a wind-driven resuspension event. The measurements were made to support marsh depositional modeling being carried out as part of an NSF-sponsored Coastal SEES research project.

Utilising quadrat.count and quadrat.test to understand metal axes as spatial point patterns
<p>As part of a Master's thesis, the spatial distribution and density of metal axes found by private metal detectorists were assessed in relation to different covariates: soil type, soil texture, land cover and estimated preservation capacity (Kibblewhite et al. 2016). The data derives from England and Wales (Portable Antiquities Scheme), Denmark (Digitale Metaldetektorfund) and the Netherlands (Portable Antiquities Scheme). Calculations were performed with the functions 'quadrat.count', 'intensity.quadratcount' and 'quadrat.test' in R. There are three separate .Rmd files per country, each refering to a particular covariable.</p>
