Bio-oil aqueous phase as a laccase inducer in Pleurotus ostreatus: laccase properties and applications, Iowa, USA 2021-2023
This dataset documents the experimental conditions, protocols, and measurements generated during the investigation of bio-oil aqueous phase (AP) as an inducer for laccase enzyme production by Pleurotus ostreatus using prairie biomass as a substrate. The data include detailed descriptions of AP preparation from corn stover pyrolysis, chemical characterization of AP and prairie biomass, and the design of two-stage solid-state fermentation experiments with variables such as AP and copper concentrations, fermentation times, and environmental parameters (pH, temperature). The dataset also contains raw and processed measurements of laccase activity, protein concentration, reducing capacity, and other relevant biochemical properties across multiple experimental runs. In addition to fermentation and enzyme production data, the dataset provides information on downstream application assays. These include quantitative data on dye decolorization (crystal violet, coomassie blue, methyl orange), saccharification yields from prairie biomass pretreated with laccase, and antibiotic detoxification assays using tetracycline.

Nitrogen cycling, soil properties and infiltration rates along a topographic gradient in lawns in Baltimore County, Maryland
The aim of this research was to examine how topography and homeowner fertilizer practices affected soil and hydrologic properties of residential lawns to determine if there are locations within lawns that have the potential to act as hotspots of nitrogen transport during rain events. This data set contains measurements of saturated infiltration rates, sorptivity, soil moisture, soil organic matter, pH, soil nitrate, soil ammonium, denitrification potentials and limiting factors, and nitrogen mineralization rates from fertilized and unfertilized residential and institutional lawns. Study lawns were located at homes of people who agreed to volunteer their lawn for the study from a door knocking campaign. Four sampling houses were located in an exurban neighborhood in Baisman Run. Five sampling houses were located in a suburban neighborhood in Dead Run. Two sampling locations on institutional lawns were located at University of Maryland Baltimore County. At the exurban study houses and institutional lawns sites,we identified one hillslope to conduct sampling on. At the Dead Run houses we identified one hillslope on the front yard and one in the backyard as there were distinct locations that were not present in the exurban neighborhood. In total we sampled on 16 hillslopes. At each hillslope, we identified the top, toe and swale locations. At each hillslope location, we selected three sampling locations along a transect (maximum 10 meters in length; total of 144 sampling locations). At each sampling location we ran a Cornell Sprinkle Infiltrometer to measure sorptivity and saturated infiltration rates. Volumetric water content was measured before and after infiltrometer runs with a Field Scout TDR 300 with 7.5 cm rods. In addition, at each sampling location we took two soil cores to 10 cm depth, and combined and homogenized the two cores for that sampling location for a total of 144 soil samples. Eight Mile Lake Research Watershed, Carbon in Permafrost Experimental Heating Research (CiPEHR): Off Plot Soil Incubation By Depth I - Soil Properties and Final Microbial Biomass 2013-2014
The Carbon in Permafrost Experimental Heating Research (CiPEHR) project addresses the following questions: 1) Does ecosystem warming cause a net release of C from the ecosystem to the atmosphere?, 2) Does the decomposition of old C, that comprises the bulk of the soil C pool, influence ecosystem C loss?, and 3) How do winter and summer warming alone, and in combination, affect ecosystem C exchange? We are answering these questions using a combination of field and laboratory experiments to measure ecosystem carbon balance and radiocarbon isotope ratios at a warming experiment located in an upland tundra field site near Healy, Alaska in the foothills of the Alaska Range. We investigated C and nitrogen (N) mineralization within the soil profile by incubating soil cores collected adjacent to (but not within) the CiPEHR site. These soil cores spanned the entire active layer and approximately 30 cm of permafrost. Soil cores were separated into 10 cm depth intervals and incubated for 241 days at 15 degC and field moisture was maintained with water additions. This dataset contains data on the bulk soil %C, bulk soil %N, soil bulk density, initial gravimetric water content measured prior to the incubation. Microbial biomass was measured at the end of the incubation and is presented here as well.
Ecological Survey of Central Arizona: soil chemistry and soil properties in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area and surrounding Sonoran desert, survey year 2000
The Ecological Survey of Central Arizona (ESCA) is an extensive field survey and integrated inventory designed to capture key ecological indicators of the CAP LTER study area consisting of the urbanized, suburbanized, and agricultural areas of metropolitan Phoenix, and the surrounding Sonoran desert. The survey is conducted every five years at approximately 200 sample plots (30m x 30m) that were located randomly using a tessellation-stratified dual-density sampling design. Study plots cover habitats throughout the CAP LTER study area ranging from native Sonoran desert sites to residential yards to an airport tarmac. Measurements include an inventory of all plants (identified to the lowest possible taxonomic unit, typically species), plant biovolume, soil coring for physicochemical properties, arthropod sweep-net sampling, photo documentation, and a visual survey of site and area characteristics. The objectives of the survey are to (1) characterize patches in terms of key biotic, physical, and chemical variables, and (2) examine relationships among land use, general plant diversity, native plant diversity, plant biovolume, soil nutrient status, and social-economic indices along an indirect urban gradient. This data set focuses specifically on soil chemistry and soil properties assessed during the 2000 survey year. Investigators interested in soil data from more recent surveys or other measured variables should search the data catalog for 'ecological survey of central arizona' or 'survey 200' to locate those and other data related to the CAP LTER's ESCA.

The genesis and water chemistry of two soil catenas and mineralogy of eolian dust were studied to evaluate the capacity of these soils to buffer acid conditions. Field and laboratory analyses of 50 soil pits and three eolian dust traps indicated that the surface horizons are mainly eolian dust accumulation and the subsurface horizons differed in texture, organic carbon percentage, bulk density, pH, concentration of soluble and exchangeable ions, dissolved organic carbon, and distribution and concentration of clay materials. The chemistry and mineralogy of the eolian dust resemble those of the surface horizons. Calcite, which increases soil buffering capacity, was found in the eolian dust. The eolian calcite probably comes from western Colorado, where limestone exposures are common. This natural liming process may reduce effects of acid rain on the aquatic system.

SPECTRAL PROPERTIES OF QUASARS FROM SLOAN DIGITAL SKY SURVEY DATA RELEASE 14: THE CATALOG
<p>We present measurements of the spectral properties for a total of 526,265 quasars, out of which 63% have continuum S/N> 3 pixel<sup>−1</sup>, selected from the fourteenth data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-DR14) quasar catalog. We performed a careful and homogeneous analysis of the SDSS spectra of these sources, to estimate the continuum and line properties of several emission lines such as Hα, Hβ, Hγ, Mg ii, C iii], C iv and Lyα. From the derived emission line parameters, we estimated single-epoch virial black hole masses (M<sub>BH</sub>) for the sample using Hβ, Mg ii, and C iv emission lines. The sample covers a wide range in bolometric luminosity (log L<sub>bol;</sub> erg s<sup>−1</sup> ) between 44.4 and 47.3 and log M<sub>BH</sub> between 7.1 and 9.9 M. Using the ratio of L<sub>bol</sub> to the Eddington luminosity as a measure of the accretion rate, the logarithm of the accretion rate is found to be in the range between −2.06 and 0.43. We performed several correlation analyses between different emission line parameters and found them to match with that known earlier using smaller samples. We noticed that strong Fe ii sources with large Balmer line width, and highly accreting sources with large M<sub>BH</sub> are rare in our sample. We make available an extended and complete catalog that contains various spectral properties of 526,265 quasars derived in this work along with other properties culled from the SDSS-DR14 quasar catalog.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Here, you will find the entire spectral catalog in the FITS forma</strong>t.</p> <ul> <li>The main catalog (“ <strong>dr14q_spec_prop.fits</strong>”) is based on the spectral information from this study consisting of 274 columns, which are described in Table B4.</li> <li>An extended catalog (“ <strong>dr14q_spec_prop_ext.fits</strong>”) where all the columns of DR14Q (Paris et al. 2018) are appended after the main catalog (ie, after column # 274). Data from: Biomechanical properties of the jaws of two species of Clevosaurus and a reanalysis of rhynchocephalian dentary morphospace
<p>Rhynchocephalians were a successful, globally distributed group of diapsid reptiles that thrived in the Mesozoic. Multiple species of <em>Clevosaurus</em> existed worldwide in the Upper Triassic and Lower Jurassic, and they are characterised by shearing bladelike teeth perhaps functionally analogous to the carnassial teeth of mammals. Morphometric analysis shows that the dentary morphospace of clevosaurs differs significantly from that of other rhynchocephalians. Five <em>Clevosaurus</em> species occupied islands in the Bristol Channel archipelago of the UK, but generally not those occupied by mammaliaforms, suggesting dietary character displacement. Identifying the diet of such ancient, small tetrapods has been difficult. To identify the nature of their feeding, we apply finite element analysis to two near complete three-dimensional skulls of the species <em>Clevosaurus hudsoni </em>and <em>Clevosaurus cambrica</em> to estimate bite force, resistance to bending and torsion, and the distribution of stresses during biting. Both species had bite forces and tooth pressures sufficient to break apart chitin, indicating that like early Mesozoic mammaliaforms, clevosaurs could feed on tough-shelled beetles and possibly small vertebrates. In addition, the mechanical advantage of the jaws falls within the range of early mammaliaforms, so though we cannot demonstrate niche partitioning between members of both clades, it raises the prospect that they may have been functionally similar.</p>
