20230523-VBCE: Agents adapt ontologies to agree on decision taking. Introducing cultural values

This archive contains the results of a multi-agent simulation experiment [1] carried out with Lazy lavender [2] environment.

Experiment Label: 20230523-VBCE

Experiment design: Agents adapt ontologies to agree on decision taking. Introducing cultural values (independece, novelty, authority, mastery) that influence which agent adapts in case of interaction failure.

Experiment setting: Agents learn decision trees (transformed into ontologies); get payoffs according to cultural values; adapt by splitting their leaf nodes

Hypotheses: Positive mastery is needed for increasing accuracy. Negative independence causes the success rate to converge faster. Negative novelty increases ontology distance. Positive authority increases accuracy when used with positive mastery.

Detailed information can be found in index.html or notebook.ipynb.

[1] https://sake.re/20230523-VBCE
[2] https://gitlab.inria.fr/moex/lazylav/

Survey data on the value of live music in Italy

This survey is part of an ethnographic research for Francesca Cireddu's PhD thesis, titled "Partecipazione ed esperienza live nei concerti pop-rock in tempi di transizione: riflessioni e proposte metodologiche a partire da alcuni casi tratti dai contesti alternativi di USA, Gran Bretagna, Italia e Cina" (trad. "Participation and live experience in pop-rock gigs in times of transitions: reflections and methodological suggestions on the basis of some case studies on alternative music contexts in USA, Great Britain, Italy and China").

Data show the value attached to live music in Italy with regards to it being a "place" for aggregation and socialisation.
77 participants between 16 and 60, from different backgrounds and areas of Italy replied.

The answers are useful in order to highlight possible incidence between socialising practices and live music practices in specific local areas in Italy with regards to urban settings and sociocultural habits. These data also show how such aspects are relevant in evaluating the way live streaming music performances may or may not be positively evaluated in Italy.

Data for: Leveraging spatio-temporal genomic breeding value estimates of dry matter yield and herbage quality in ryegrass via random regression models

Joint modeling of correlated multi-environment and multi-harvest data of perennial crop species may offer advantages in prediction schemes and a better understanding of the underlying dynamics in space and time. The goal of the present study was to investigate the relevance of incorporating the longitudinal dimension of within-season multiple measurements of forage perennial ryegrass traits in a reaction norm model setup that additionally accounts for genotype-environment interactions (G×E). Genetic parameters and accuracy of genomic breeding value (gEBV) predictions were investigated by fitting three random regression models (gRRM) using Legendre polynomial functions to the data. Genomic DNA sequencing of family pools of diploid perennial ryegrass was performed using DNA nanoball-based technology and yielded 56,645 single nucleotide polymorphisms which were used to calculate the allele frequency-based genomic relationship matrix. Biomass yield's estimated additive genetic variance and heritability values were higher in later harvests. The additive genetic correlations were moderate to low in early measurements and peaked at intermediates, with fairly stable values across the environmental gradient, except for the initial harvest data collection. This led to the conclusion that complex (G×E) arises from spatial and temporal dimensions in the early season, with lower re-ranking trends thereafter. In general, modeling the temporal dimension with a second-order orthogonal polynomial improved the accuracy of gEBV prediction for nutritive quality traits, but no gain in prediction accuracy was detected for dry matter yield. This study leverages the flexibility and usefulness of gRRM models for perennial ryegrass breeding and can be readily extended to other multi-harvest crops.

Chemical upcycling of polyethylene, polypropylene, and mixtures to high-value surfactants

Conversion of plastic wastes to fatty acids is an attractive means to supplement the sourcing of these high-value, high-volume chemicals. Herein, we report a method for transforming polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) at ~80% conversion to fatty acids with number average molar masses up to ~700 Da and 670 Da, respectively. The process is applicable to municipal PE and PP wastes and their mixtures. Temperature-gradient thermolysis is the key to controllably degrading PE and PP into waxes and inhibiting producing small molecules. The waxes are upcycled to fatty acids by oxidation over manganese stearate and subsequent saponification. PP ꞵ-scission produces more olefin wax and yields higher acid-number fatty acids than PE. We further convert the fatty acids to high-value, large-market-volume surfactants. Industrial-scale technoeconomic analysis suggests economic viability without subsidies.

Trait value of Stipa krylovii populations in control and drought treatments

Understanding patterns of intraspecific trait variation can help us understand plant adaptability to environmental changes. To explore the underlying adaptation mechanisms of zonal plant species, we selected seven populations of Stipa krylovii, a dominant species in the Inner Mongolia Steppe of China, and evaluated the effects of phenotypic plasticity and genetic differentiation, the effects of climate variables on population trait differentiation, and traits coordinated patterns under each soil moisture treatment. We selected seeds from seven populations of S. krylovii in the Inner Mongolia Steppe, China, and carried out a soil moisture (2) × population origin (7) common garden experiment at Tianjin City, China, and measured ten plant traits of S. krylovii. General linear analyses were used to analyze how soil moisture and population origin affect each trait variation, Mantel tests were used to analyze population trait differentiation - geographic distance (or climatic difference) relationships, regression analyses were used to evaluate the trait-climatic variable relationships, and plant trait networks (PTNs) were used to evaluate the traits coordinated patterns. Both soil moisture and population origin showed significant effects on most of the traits. Aboveground biomass, root-shoot ratio, leaf width, specific leaf area, and leaf nitrogen (N) content were significantly correlated with climate variables under the control condition. Specific leaf area and leaf N content were significantly correlated with climate variables under drought conditions. By PTNs, the hub trait(s) was plant height under the control treatment and were aboveground biomass, root length, and specific leaf area under drought conditions. This study indicates that both phenotypic plasticity and genetic differentiation can significantly affect the adaptability of S. krylovii. In addition, soil moisture treatments show significant effects on trait-climate relationships and trait-coordinated patterns. These findings provide new insights into the adaptive mechanisms of zonal species in the semi-arid grassland region.
