Data from: Calculation on surface energy and electronic properties of CoS2

<p>Density functional theory was employed to investigate the (111), (200), (210), (211), and (220) surfaces of CoS<sub>2</sub>. The surface energy were calculated with a sulfur environment using first-principles based thermodynamics. It is founded that surfaces with metal atoms at their outermost layer are predicted to have higher energy. The stoichiometric (220) surface terminated by two layer of sulfur atoms is the most stable under the sulfur-rich condition, while the nonstoichiometric (211) surface terminated by a layer of Co atoms has the lower energy under the decreasingly sulfur-poor environment. A spin-polarized bands were calculated on the stoichiometric surfaces. The electric structure results showed that there may be some active sites on (200) since it has high Fermi energy and its front valence electrons are active. There was an energy gap between the stoichiometric (220) and (211), which have low Fermi energy, indicating that the electronic structures were dynamically stable. These two stoichiometric (200) and (210) surfaces are predicted to be noticeably spin-polarized. The results of BFDH method was adopted to predict crystal growth habit. It showed that the important crystal planes for the CoS<sub>2</sub> crystal growth were (111) and (200) planes, and the macroscopic morphology of CoS<sub>2</sub> crystal may be spherical, cubic, octahedral, prismatic or plate-shaped, which have been verified by experiments.</p>

Data from: Impact of agricultural weathering on physicochemical properties of biodegradable plastic mulch films: comparison of two diverse climates over four successive years

<p><span><span><span>Biodegradable plastic mulch films (BDMs) are essential in </span><span><span>the</span></span><span> production of vegetable and specialty crops due to their promotion of increased crop yield and quality. Unlike conventional polyethylene (PE) mulches, BDMs can be tilled into the soil after crop harvest to undergo biodegradation, thereby leading to minimal environmental impact. Agricultural weathering impacts both the performance of BDMs during crop production as a barrier to weeds and biodegradability of BDMs in the soil. To better understand the relative importance of climatic factors, the change of physicochemical properties of BDMs during single-season, 3-4 month, field trials for vegetable production at two diverse climates (Knoxville, TN and Mount Vernon, WA) across four successive years (2015-2018) was evaluated. Mulch treatments consisted of four commercially available BDMs composed primarily of polybutylene co-adipate- co-terephthalate (PBAT) that differed in color and polymeric feedstock</span><span><span>, a</span></span><span> black experimental BDM prepared from polylactic acid/polyhydroxybutyrate (PLA/PHA) blend, and conventional PE mulch. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Mulch deterioration did not vary extensively between </span><span><span>years. </span></span><span><span>Solar</span></span><span> radiation, an important factor to degradation of mulches, was higher in WA than TN in most sampling years. Yet, degradation occurred </span><span><span>more greatly for</span></span><span> BDMs in TN</span><span><span>,</span></span><span> which </span><span><span>is attributable</span></span><span> to higher temperatures in TN. </span><span><span>Loss of</span></span><span> mechanical properties and color </span><span><span>was greater</span></span><span> than chemical </span><span><span>property changes.</span></span><span> </span><span><span>Differences in the extent of molecular weight decrease</span></span><span> between years correlated significantly with solar radiation </span><span><span>exposure at the two locations.</span></span><span> A black-colored PBAT-based BDM was less susceptible to degradation than equivalent clear and white-on-black films, due to carbon black acting as a photostabilizer. The impact of weathering also differed between </span><span><span>three commercially available PBAT-based films.</span></span><span> The PLA/PHA mulch was more susceptible to degradation than PBAT-based BDMs, particularly in the warmer location, TN, partially due to a leaching out of PHA and lower-molecular weight polymer molecules. The extent of change for physicochemical properties </span><span><span>of</span></span><span> BDMs due to agricultural weathering is greatly affected by polymeric composition, </span><span><span>and is greater in warmer climates.</span></span></span></span></p>

Reinvestigating the Photoprotection Properties of a Mycosporine Amino Acid Motif

<p>With the growing concern regarding commercially available ultraviolet (UV) filters damaging the environment, there is an urgent need to discover new UV filters. A family of molecules called mycosporines and mycosporine-like amino acids (referred to as MAAs collectively) are synthesized by cyanobacteria, fungi and algae and act as the natural UV filters for these organisms. Mycosporines are formed of a cyclohexenone core structure while mycosporine-like amino acids are formed of a cyclohexenimine core structure. To better understand the photoprotection properties of MAAs, we implement a bottom-up approach by first studying a simple analog of an MAA, 3-aminocyclohex-2-en-1-one (ACyO). Previous experimental studies on ACyO using transient electronic absorption spectroscopy (TEAS) suggest that upon photoexcitation, ACyO becomes trapped in the minimum of an S1 state, which persists for extended time delays (&gt;2.5 ns). However, these studies were unable to establish the extent of electronic ground state recovery of ACyO within 2.5 ns due to experimental constraints. In the present studies, we have implemented transient vibrational absorption spectroscopy (as well as complementary TEAS) with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and density functional theory to establish the extent of electronic ground state recovery of ACyO within this time window. We show that by 1.8 ns, there is &gt;75% electronic ground state recovery of ACyO, with the remaining percentage likely persisting in the electronic excited state. Long-term irradiation studies on ACyO have shown that a small percentage degrades after 2 h of irradiation, plausibly due to some of the aforementioned trapped ACyO going on to form a photoproduct. Collectively, these studies imply that a base building block of MAAs already displays characteristics of an effective UV filter.</p>

MSSiS - Diversity of MDE Toolboxes and Their Uncommon Properties

<p>Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) has reached some maturity. Due to that, a high diversity of technologies and platforms have emerged to support the resolution of a range of problems and contexts in which MDEis adopted as a solution. As a consequence, when some level of reuse of those artifacts (such as model transformations, Domain-Specific Languages(DSLs) and refinement tools), difficulties are faced due to the high diversity of formats in which all those assets are specified. Since we noted this trend, we decided to search for instances in the literature that supports our hypothesis of a high degree of diversity in MDE artifacts in the state of the practice. Thus, we carried out an exploratory literature review. As a result, we summarized key studies used as input to build a search string adopted to structure a future systematic literature review. Our study contributes by classifying nine types of MDE toolboxes with uncommon properties than those usually found in MDE workbenches.</p>

Floral spectral reflectance data for: Floral color properties of serpentine seep assemblages depend on community size and species richness

<p>Functional traits, particularly those that impact fitness, can shape the ecological and evolutionary relationships among coexisting species of the same trophic level. Thus, examining these traits and properties of their distributions (underdispersion, overdispersion) within communities can provide insights into key ecological interactions (e.g., competition, facilitation) involved in community assembly. For instance, the distribution of floral colors in a community may reflect pollinator-mediated interactions between sympatric plant species, and the phylogenetic distribution of color can inform how evolutionary contingencies can continue to shape extant community assemblages. Additionally, the abundance and species richness of the local habitat may influence the type or strength of ecological interactions among co-occurring species. To evaluate the impact of community size and species richness on mechanisms shaping the distribution of ecologically relevant traits, we examined how floral color (defined by pollinator color vision models) is distributed within co-flowering assemblages. We modeled floral reflectance spectra of 55 co-flowering species using honeybee (<i>Apis mellifera</i>) and syrphid fly (<i>Eristalis tenax</i>) visual systems to assess the distributions of flower color across 14 serpentine seep communities in California. We found that phylogenetic relatedness had little impact on the observed color assemblages. However, smaller seep communities with lower species richness were more overdispersed for flower color than larger, more species-rich communities. Results support that competitive exclusion could be a dominant process shaping the species richness of flower color in smaller-sized communities with lower species richness, but this is less detectable or overwhelmed by other processes at larger, more speciose communities.</p>

Ocean acidification alters properties of the exoskeleton in adult tanner crabs, Chionoecetes bairdi

Ocean acidification can affect the ability of calcifying organisms to build and maintain mineralized tissue. In decapod crustaceans, the exoskeleton is a multilayered structure composed of chitin, protein, and mineral, predominately magnesian calcite or amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC). We investigated the effects of acidification on the exoskeleton of mature (post-terminal-molt) female southern Tanner crabs, Chionoecetes bairdi. Crabs were exposed to one of three pH levels—8.1, 7.8, or 7.5—for two years. Reduced pH led to a suite of body-region-specific effects on the exoskeleton. Microhardness of the claw was 38% lower in crabs at pH 7.5 compared with those at pH 8.1, but carapace microhardness was unaffected by pH. In contrast, reduced pH altered elemental content in the carapace (reduced calcium, increased magnesium), but not the claw. Diminished structural integrity and thinning of the exoskeleton was observed at reduced pH in both body regions; internal erosion of the carapace was present in most crabs at pH 7.5, and the claws of these crabs showed substantial external erosion, with tooth-like denticles nearly or completely worn away. Using infrared spectroscopy, we observed a shift in the phase of calcium carbonate present in the carapace of pH-7.5 crabs: a mix of ACC and calcite was found in the carapace of crabs at pH 8.1, whereas the bulk of calcium carbonate had transformed to calcite in pH-7.5 crabs. With limited capacity for repair, the exoskeleton of long-lived crabs that undergo a terminal molt, such as C. bairdi, may be especially susceptible to ocean acidification.

Similar but different: Revealing the relative roles of species‐traits versus biome properties structuring genetic variation in South American marsh rats

<p>Aim: Wetland habitats, and the ecological restrictions imposed by them, structure patterns of genetic variation in constituent taxa. As such, genetic variation may reflect properties of the specific biomes species inhabit, or shared life history traits among species may result in similar genetic structure. We evaluated these hypotheses jointly by quantifying the similarity of genetic structure in three South American marsh rat species (Holochilus), and test how genetic variation in each species relates to biome‐specific environmental space and historical stability.</p> <p>Location: South America.</p> <p>Taxon: Rodentia.</p> <p>Methods: Using complementary analyses (Mantel tests, dbRDA, Procrustes, covariance structure of allele frequencies and environmental niche models [ENMs]) with 8,000–32,000 SNPs per species, we quantified the association between genomic variation and geographic and/or environmental differences.</p> <p>Results: Significant association between genetic variation and geography was identified for all species. Similarity in the strength of the association suggests connectivity patterns dictated by shared species‐traits predominate at the biome scale. However, substantial amounts of genetic variation are not explained by geography. Focusing on this portion of the variance, we demonstrate a significant quantitative association between genetic variation and the environmental space of a biome, and a qualitative association with varying regional stability. Specifically, historically stable areas estimated from ecological niche models are correlated with local levels of geographic structuring, suggesting that local biome‐specific histories affect population isolation/ connectivity.</p>

Volumetric properties of dilute (d-glucose + H2O) solutions at temperatures from (293.15 to 433.15) K and pressures from (0.10 to 50.00) MPa

<p>The densities of aqueous solutions of D-glucose were measure at temperatures from (293.15 to 433.15) K and pressures from (0.10 to 50.00) MPa using a vibrating-tube densimeter.  Apparent molar volumes <i>V</i><sub>φ,m</sub> and partial molar volumes at infinite dilution <i>V</i><sup>∞</sup> were calculated from the experimental results. <i>V</i><sup>∞</sup> increases as temperature increases and varies linearly with temperature above ~300 K. In addition, <i>V</i><sup>∞ </sup>does not vary as a function of pressure up to 50.0 MPa.  Comparison of these results with previous studies indicate excellent agreement and significantly extend the experimental database for aqueous solutions of D-glucose to elevated temperatures and pressures. </p>
