Text Analyses of Survey Data on "Mapping Research Output to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)"

This package contains data on five text analysis types (term extraction, contract analysis, topic modeling, network mapping), based on the survey data where researchers selected research output that are related to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Data from: Sustainability management of short-lived freshwater fish in human-altered ecosystems should focus on adult survival

Fish populations globally are susceptible to endangerment through exploitation and habitat loss. We present theoretical simulations to explore how reduced adult survival (age truncation) might affect short-lived freshwater fish species in human-altered contemporary environments. Our simulations evaluate two hypothetical "average fish" and five example fish species of age 1 or age 2 maturity. From a population equilibrium baseline representing a natural, unaltered environment we impose systematic reductions in adult survival and quantify how age truncation affects the causes of variation in population growth rate. We estimate the relative contributions to population growth rate arising from simulated temporal variation in age-specific vital rates and population structure. At equilibrium and irrespective of example species, population structure (first adult age class) and survival probability of the first two adult age classes are the most important determinants of population growth. As adult survival decreases, the first reproductive age class becomes increasingly important to variation in population growth. All simulated examples show the same general pattern of change with age truncation as known for exploited, longer-lived fish species in marine and freshwater environments. This implies age truncation is a general potential concern for fish biodiversity across life history strategies and ecosystems. Managers of short-lived, freshwater fishes in contemporary environments often focus on supporting reproduction to ensure population persistence. However, a strong focus on water management to support reproduction may reduce adult survival. Sustainability management needs a focus on mitigating adult mortality in human-altered ecosystems. A watershed spatial extent embracing land and water uses may be necessary to identify and mitigate causes of age truncation in freshwater species. Achieving higher adult survival will require paradigm transformations in society and government about water management priorities.

Data from: Sustained immune activation is associated with susceptibility to the amphibian chytrid fungus

The disease chytridiomycosis caused by the fungus Bd has devastated amphibian populations worldwide. Functional genomic contributions to host susceptibility remain enigmatic and vary between species and populations. We conducted experimental Bd infections in Rana yavapaiensis, a species with intraspecific variation in chytridiomycosis susceptibility, to assess the skin and spleen transcriptomic response to infection over time. We predicted that increased immune gene expression would be associated with a positive disease outcome, but we instead found that surviving frogs had significantly reduced immune gene expression compared to susceptible frogs and to uninfected controls. MHC class II gene expression was also significantly higher in susceptible frogs compared to surviving frogs. Furthermore, susceptible frogs expressed a significantly larger number of distinct class II alleles, demonstrating a negative correlation between class II expression, functional diversity, and survival. Expression of the MHC class II locus previously associated with Bd disease outcomes was a significant predictor of Bd infection intensity at early infection stages but not at late infection stages, suggesting initial MHC-linked immune processes are important for ultimate disease outcomes. We infer through disease association and phylogenetic analysis that certain MHC variants are linked to the immune expression that was negatively associated with survival, and we hypothesize that frogs that did not express these alleles could better survive infections. Our study finds that MHC expression at early and late infection stages predicts Bd infection intensity, and suggests that generating a sustained immune response against Bd may be counterproductive for surviving chytridiomycosis in this partially susceptible species.

Sustainable harvesting and conservation of Laelia furfuracea, a rare epiphytic orchid from Oaxaca, Mexico

Many epiphytic orchids are harvested in Mexico for different purposes. Laelia furfuracea is one of the most intensively traded species. Its inflorescences are used as ornaments during the December festivities. We investigated the effect of severing the flowering pseudobulb. This is the traditional technique frequently used by collectors at the study area. We wished to investigate its effects on the production of new pseudobulbs, as well as on their size and flowering probability. Also, we examined the survival probability and growth of individuals that had fallen on the ground to evaluate their potential as trading resources. Inflorescence collection did not affect the production of new pseudobulbs the following season. However, it affected the size of these pseudobulbs, as well as their flowering probability. Yet, the direction of this effect was not consistent between years. Nearly six percent of all L. furfuracea plants at the study site were found on the ground. Over 80 percent of them survived for at least two years, although most of them showed pseudobulb loss over that period of time. We conclude that harvesting of flowering pseudobulbs may be sustainable in terms of its effects on plant performance, at least in the short term. The active management of plants that have fallen on the ground may reduce the harvesting pressure on natural populations. Harvesting of flowering pseudobulbs may diminish some aspects of plant performance, but its effects need to be evaluated with complete life cycle data and take into account interannual variation in vital rates.

Qualitative data on: Sustainability drivers and inhibitors for the health system performance improvement projects in selected health facilities in Kenya

Objectives to investigate the health managers perceived sustainability status of the health facilities institutional improvement projects and their experiences on factors that facilitated or constrained their maintenance, with intentions of informing relevant strategies or policies in Kenya's health sector.

Methods A qualitative study, nested within a quasi-experimental study. Thirty-three project-teams of health managers were purposively selected and interviewed based on their project implementation success rates post-training. The managers had previously undergone a 9-month leadership training, complimented with facility-based team coaching around the chosen projects. The training was funded by the USAID; however, the implementation of the projects was based on how the participants could innovatively utilize the existing resource to create a positive change. The projects were housed within 20 public, nine faith-based, and four private health facilities in 19 Counties in Kenya. The interviews explored the manager's experiences in sustaining the successfully implemented projects within the (24-60 months post-training period). We asked Managers to describe factors they perceived enabled or hindered the sustainability of the successfully implemented institutional improvement project. The digitally audio-recorded interviews were transcribed verbatim. Data on barriers and enablers were thematically analyzed.

Results Twenty-seven out of the 33 successfully implemented projects reported sustainability within periods ranging from 24-60 months post-training. Seven themes related to drivers of sustainability emerged, namely; program design, stakeholder's buy-in, board members, communication, coaching, presence of change champion, devolution and political good-will. Four sustainability inhibitors identified were; human resources constraints, policy implementation, misalignment of projects with daily operations, devolution and political interference.

Conclusions The sustainability of institutional improvement strategies such as projects implemented post-leadership training in public and private health facilities depends on the quality of board members, communication management and institutionalization of coaching culture. These findings are pertinent for planning and implementing similar health systems strengthening intervention in low-income countries.
