Dataset related to the article "A Breathtaking Lift: Sex and Body Mass Index Differences in Cardiopulmonary Response in a Large Cohort of Unselected Subjects with Acute Exposure to High Altitude" 2021
<p><strong><em>Background:</em></strong> Every year, thousands of people travel to high altitude and experience hypoxemia. At high altitude, the partial pressure of oxygen decreases. The aim of this observational study was to determine if there is a relationship between anthropometric features and basic cardiorespiratory variables, including oxygen saturation (SpO<sub>2</sub>), heart rate (HR), and blood pressure (BP), following acute exposure to high altitude. <strong><em>Materials and Methods:</em></strong> At the 3,466 m top of a cableway station, we installed an automated system for measuring peripheral SpO<sub>2</sub>, HR, BP, height, weight, and body mass index (BMI). <strong><em>Results:</em></strong> Between January and October 2020, out of 4,874 volunteers (age 39.9 ± 15.4 years, male 54.4%), 3,267 provided complete data (1,808 cases during winter and 1,459 during summer). SpO<sub>2</sub> was 86.8% ± 6.8%. At multivariable analysis, SpO<sub>2</sub> was significantly associated with age, sex, season, BMI, and HR but not with BP. We identified 391 (12%) subjects with SpO<sub>2</sub> ≤80%: they were older, with a higher BMI and HR but without sex or BP differences. Finally, winter season was associated with greater frequency of SpO<sub>2</sub> ≤80% (13.3% vs. 10.3%, <em>p</em> = 0.008). <strong><em>Conclusion:</em></strong> Our data show that high BMI, older age, and male sex were associated with greater degrees of hypoxemia following exposure to high altitude, particularly during the winter.</p>

<p>This record contains raw data related to the article "An optimized MRM-based workflow of the L-arginine/nitric oxide pathway metabolites revealed disease- and sex-related differences in the cardiovascular field"</p> <p>Clinical data indicate that low circulating L-homoarginine (HArg) concentrations are associated with cardiovascular (CV) disease, CV mortality, and all-cause mortality. A high number of LC-based analytical methods for the quantification of HArg, in combination with the L-arginine (Arg)-related pathway metabolites, have been reported. However, these methods usually consider a limited panel of analytes. Thus, in order to achieve a comprehensive picture of the Arg metabolism, we described an improved targeted metabolomic approach based on a multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mass spectrometry method for the simultaneous quantification of the Arg/nitric oxide (NO) pathway metabolites. This methodology was then employed to quantify plasma concentrations of these analytes in a cohort of individuals with different grades/types of coronary artery disease (CAD) in order to increase knowledge about the role of HArg and its associated metabolites in the CV field. Our results showed that the MRM method here implemented is suitable for the simultaneous assessment of a wide panel of amino acids involved in the Arg/NO metabolic pathway, in plasma samples from patients with CV disease. Further, the findings highlighted an impairment of the Arg/NO metabolic pathway, and suggest a sex-dependent regulation of this metabolic route.</p>
Burnout syndrome and its determinants among healthcare workers during the first wave of the Covid-19 outbreak in Italy: a cross-sectional study to identify sex-related differences.

PMID: 34446687; PMCID: PMC8436819.</p> <p><strong>Introduction: </strong>Several studies described burnout levels of healthcare workers (HCWs) during the COVID-19 pandemic; however, sex-related differences remain poorly investigated.</p> <p><strong>Objective: </strong>To describe sex-related differences in burnout and its determinants among HCWs during the first pandemic wave of the COVID-19 in Italy.</p> <p><strong>Methods: </strong>A cross-sectional study was performed between April and May 2020. The framework given by the Job Demands Resources (JD-R) model was used to assess burnout determinants (risk and protective factors).</p> <p><strong>Results: </strong>Male HCWs (n=133) had higher levels of depersonalization than female HCWs (P=0,017) and female HCWs (n=399) reported greater emotional exhaustion rates (P=0,005). Female nurses were the most exposed to burnout (OR=2,47; 95%CI=1,33-4,60; P=0,004), emotional exhaustion (OR=1,89; 95% CI=1,03-3,48; P=0,041), and depersonalization (OR=1,91; 95% CI=1,03-3,53; P=0,039). Determinants of burnout differed between sexes, and some paradoxical associations were detected: the score of job demands was a protective factor in females for burnout, emotional exhaustion, and depersonalization, resilience was a risk factor for males.</p> <p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>This study reveals that the stressors in male and female HCWs tended to be associated with burnout differently. Both sexes showed alarming burnout levels, even if the weights of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization acted in different ways between the sexes. The revealed paradoxical effects in this study could reflect the study's cross-sectional nature, highlighting that more resilient and empathic individuals were more consciously overwhelmed by the challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic, thus reporting higher scores of emotional exhaustion and burnout. Future in-depth and longitudinal analyses are recommended to further explore sex-related differences in burnout among HCWs.</p>
Sex Differences in Cutaneous Melanoma: Incidence, Clinicopathological Profile, Survival, and Costs
<p>This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of sex-related characteristics of cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM), with special reference to its incidence, clinicopathological profile, overall survival, and treatment-related costs. This retrospective cohort study included all 1,279 CMM patients who were registered in 2015 in the Veneto Cancer Registry (a population-based registry including all 4,900,000 regional residents). The by-sex comparisons included tumor stage and site, histological subtype, and other clinical-pathological variables. A Cox regression analysis was used to test the association between sex and survival, adjusting for the main covariates. Treatment costs were calculated by linking patients with several administrative regional databases. Age-specific incidence rates were significantly higher for men among people >50 years old. For men, the trunk was the most common primary site (59.3%), whereas for women the lower limbs (32.1%) were the most common primary site, followed by the trunk (31.8%), which was lower than for men (<em>p</em> < 0.001). At presentation, the frequency of early stage CMM was higher among women, who also featured a significantly lower risk of death (<em>p</em> = 0.016), after adjusting for covariates. Men also incurred higher costs for melanoma treatment in the first year after their diagnosis. Among younger adults, CMM was more common in women, whereas among older adults, it was more common in men. Sex also influences patients' histopathological characteristics at diagnosis. Women had better overall survival after adjusting for demographic, pathological, and clinical profiles. The costs of treatment were also lower for women with CMM.</p>
