Magnetic and gravimetric models of La Palma (Canary Island) from standalone and joint inversions.

<p>The Excel file contains the updated 3D models derived from the standalone and joint inversions of the magnetic and gravimetric anomalies on the island of La Palma (Canary Islands). The first Excel sheet contains the 3D magnetic susceptibility model from the standalone inversion. The second sheet shows the 3D magnetic susceptibility model from the joint inversion and the last sheet contain the density contrast model derived from the joint inversion.</p> <p>Each sheet has the following columns:</p> <p>Coordinate UTM X, Coordinate UTM Y, Height (-) or Depth (+), Physical property (magnetic susceptibility or density).&nbsp;</p> <p>Units are given in the headings.</p>

Estimating labquake source parameters: spectral inversion from a calibrated acoustic system

<p>Laboratory acoustic emissions (AEs) serve as small-scale analogues to earthquakes, offering fundamental insights into seismic processes. To ensure accurate physical interpretations of AEs, rigorous calibration of the acoustic system is essential. In this paper, we present an empirical calibration technique that quantifies sensor responses, instrumentation effects, and path characteristics into a single entity termed instrument apparatus response.</p> <p>Using a controlled seismic source with different steel balls, we retrieve the instrument apparatus response in the frequency domain under typical experimental conditions for various piezoelectric sensors (PZTs) arranged to simulate a three-component seismic station. Removing these responses from the raw AEs spectra allows us to obtain calibrated AE source spectra which are then effectively used to constrain the AEs seismic source parameters.</p> <p>We apply this calibration method to acoustic emissions (AEs) generated during unstable stick-slip behavior of quartz gouge in double-direct shear experiments. The calibrated AEs range in magnitude from -7.1 to -6.4 and exhibit stress drops between 0.075 MPa and 4.29 MPa,&nbsp; consistent with earthquake scaling relation.&nbsp;</p> <p>This result highlights the strong similarities between AEs generated from frictional gouge experiments and natural earthquakes. Through this acoustic emission calibration we gain physical insights into the seismic sources of laboratory AEs, enhancing our understanding of seismic rupture processes in fault gouge experiments.</p>

Data from: The adaptive significance of chromosomal inversion polymorphisms in Drosophila melanogaster

Chromosomal inversions, structural mutations that reverse a segment of a chromosome, cause suppression of recombination in the heterozygous state. Several studies have shown that inversion polymorphisms can form clines or fluctuate predictably in frequency over seasonal time spans. These observations prompted the hypothesis that chromosomal rearrangements might be subject to spatially and/or temporally varying selection. Here we review what has been learned about the adaptive significance of inversion polymorphisms in the vinegar fly Drosophila melanogaster, the species in which they were first discovered by Sturtevant in 1917. A large body of work provides compelling evidence that several inversions in this system are adaptive; however, the precise selective mechanisms that maintain them polymorphic in natural populations remain poorly understood. Recent advances in population genomics, modeling and functional genetics promise to greatly improve our understanding of this longstanding and fundamental problem in the near future.

Data from: Long distance dispersal and genetic structure of natural populations: an assessment of the inverse isolation hypothesis in peat mosses

It is well accepted that the shape of the dispersal kernel, especially its tail, has a substantial effect on the genetic structure of species. Theory predicts that dispersal by fat-tailed kernels reshuffles genetic material and thus preserves genetic diversity during colonization. Moreover, if efficient long distance dispersal is coupled with random colonization, an inverse isolation effect is predicted to develop in which increasing genetic diversity per colonizer is expected with increasing distance from a genetically variable source. By contrast, increasing isolation leads to decreasing genetic diversity when dispersal is via thin-tailed kernels. Here we use a well-established model group for dispersal biology (peat mosses: genus Sphagnum) with a fat-tailed dispersal kernel, and the natural laboratory of the Stockholm archipelago to study the validity of the inverse isolation hypothesis in spore-dispersed plants in island colonization. Population genetic structure of three species (S. fallax, S. fimbriatum and S. palustre) with contrasting life histories and ploidy levels were investigated on a set of islands using microsatellites. Our data show (φ'st, AMOVA, IBD) that dispersal of the two most abundant species can be well approximated by a random colonization model. We find that genetic diversity per colonizer on islands increases with distance from the mainland for S. fallax and S. fimbriatum. By contrast, S. palustre deviates from this pattern, owing to its restricted distribution in the region affecting its source pool strength. Therefore, the inverse isolation effect appears to hold in natural populations of peat mosses and, likely, in other organisms with small diaspores.
