Santa Barbara Channel fish and invertebrate surveys at oil and gas platforms

Dataset contains occurrences of fish and invertebrates at nine oil and gas platforms between 1995 and 2011 in the southern California (Pt. Arguello to Long Beach). Observations were collected using a manned submersible at depths ranging from 29 – 224 meters (95 - 739 feet). Data are organized into two tables: (1) the fish count (1995-2000) and (2) the invertebrate count (1997-2011). Fish surveys were conducted primarily at nine Platforms (Irene, Hidalgo, Harvest, Hermosa, Holly, Gilda, Grace, Gina, Gail) in the Santa Barbara Channel and Santa Maria Basin. Invertebrate surveys were collected at these nine platforms plus Platform Edith, located off Long Beach (1998) and partial submersible surveys were completed around Platforms C, B, A, Hillhouse, Henry, Houchin, Hogan, and Habitat (2000). See additional methods under “Methods” and citations therein. The Santa Barbara Channel and Santa Maria Basin are situated in a dynamic marine transition zone between the regional flow patterns of central and southern California. The Santa Barbara Channel is about 100 km long by about 50 km wide (60 x 20 miles) and is bordered on the south by the Northern Channel Islands (San Miguel, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, and Anacapa). The smaller Santa Maria Basin is located off Pt. Arguello to the northwest. The entire area is bathed in a complex hydrographic system of currents and water masses. The convergence of different water masses in the Santa Barbara Channel results in relatively large scale fluctuations in physical parameters (e.g., temperature, salinity, oxygen, and nutrient concentrations) and biotic assemblages (e. g., flora and fauna).

As part of the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, water was diverted to a relict stream channel in order to reactivate the streamflow. The purpose of this experiment was to quantify the time scales of response to the arrival of water after many years of dessication. This table contains data showing the prevalence of algal type (brown, red, orange or green) and species for the Relict Channel in the Fryxell basin.

Regional study of Melampus bidentatus density and other invertebrates in northeast U.S. salt marshes

We sampled the coffee-bean snail, Melampus bidentatus in four habitats (Spartina patens, tall/creekside S. alterniflora, stunted S. alterniflora, and transitional S. patens) in 8 marshes in the northeast U.S. , including the Plum Island Estuary. Overall, snails were larger in the stunted S. alternilfora and transitional S. patens habitats than in S. patens ones. Only 2 snails were found in the tall S. alterniflora. Temperature, relative humidity and other inverts were also measured. These data are published in Johnson and Williams 2017 ( http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ece3.3291/full ) and refered to as the Regional Study.

Database of Romanian cave invertebrates with a Red List of cave species and a list of hotspot/coldspot caves

The increasing human impact in Romanian caves raises the urgency of publishing a correct database of the strictly-adapted cave fauna. Previous attempts at indexing cave fauna and classifying caves by using their fauna opened many questions regarding the use of an incomplete list of cave species and mixed lists of troglobionts/stygobionts with troglophiles/stygophiles for ranking caves with priority for protection. It has also become obvious that there is a need to publish a list of Romanian cave species that are under threat. Cave species in Romania (and elsewhere) are endemic on small ranges, are unique and must be considered as important units for conservation. A cave must be equally protected if it has one or more rare and strictly endemic cave species. Although not exhaustive, we here provide the first checklist of Romanian troglobionts/stygobionts developed in the framework of the DARKFOOD and GROUNDWATERISK projects, coordinated by the "Emil Racovita" Institute of Speleology, Cluj-Napoca, Romania. The GIS application was used to complement the checklist of cave species with data on caves and surface environments above the caves. Until complete data on species diversity and population sizes are made available for each cave, measures of conservation can be implemented, based on the presence/absence of cave species, while classifications of caves for protection, based on the number of species, must be avoided. We also propose a list of Romanian caves with fauna that are under threat and a tentative Red List of Romanian troglobiont/stygobionts. This is the first database with identified troglobiont and stygobiont species of Romania, with a critical analysis of their distribution inside the country. A list of caves that need protection for their rare and unique species and a tentative Red List of Romanian cave fauna are also added. A total of 173 species were identified, of which 77 troglobionts and 96 stygobionts are currently registered in 366 caves. The database is divided into two parts, one part with a list of troglobionts, their revised systematic position, cave name, cave code and geographic region; and the second part with the same information on stygobionts. The database represents the contribution of many active researchers, who are the authors of this paper and of review publications of many other authors of the "Emil Racoviță" Institute of Speleology.

Invertebrate community structure predicts natural pest control resilience to insecticide exposure

<p>Biological pest control has become one of the central principles of ecological intensification in agriculture. However, invertebrate natural enemies within agricultural ecosystems are exposed to a myriad of different pesticides at both lethal and sub-lethal doses, that may limit their capacity to carry out pest control. An important question is how underlying diversity in invertebrate predator species, linked to their unique susceptibility to insecticides, can act to increase the resilience of natural pest control.</p> <p>We explore this issue by assessing the effects of sub-lethal insecticide exposure on the predation rates of 12 generalist predators feeding on the aphid <i>Sitobion avenae</i> (Aphididae).  Predation rates within a 24 hr period were assessed (predation assessment) for each species after receiving one of the following treatments: 1) no prior deltamethrin exposure before the predation assessment (control); 2) deltamethrin exposure immediately before the predation assessment (resistance); and 3) deltamethrin exposure five days before the predation assessment (recovery). Extrapolating from these species-specific measures of resistance and recovery, we predicted the resilience of community level predation to insecticide exposure for predator communities associated with 256 arable fields in the UK.</p> <p>There was large variation in sub-lethal effects of the insecticide between even closely related species. This ranged from species showing no change in predation rates following sub-lethal insecticide exposure (high resistance), species showing only immediate depressed feeding rates after 24 hrs (high recovery), or those with depressed feeding rates after five days (low resistance and recovery).</p> <p>The community level analysis showed that resistance and recovery of natural pest control was predicted by both community phylogenetic diversity (positively) and weighted mean body mass (negatively). However, the removal of numerically dominant species from the analysis modified these effects.</p> <p><strong>Synthesis and applications. </strong>Our results highlight the role of community diversity in maintaining the resilience of natural pest control following insecticide use. Importantly, less diverse assemblages dominated by predator species that show low resilience to insecticide exposure, may show a greater depression in pest control than diverse assemblages under insecticide based farmland management.  </p>
