Observation of mHz-level cooperative Lamb shifts in an optical atomic clock

We report on the direct observation of resonant electric dipole-dipole interactions in a cubic array of atoms in the many-excitation limit. The interactions, mediated by single-atom couplings to the shared electromagnetic vacuum, are shown to produce spatially-dependent cooperative Lamb shifts when spectroscopically interrogating the mHz-wide optical clock transition in strontium-87. We show that the ensemble-averaged shifts can be suppressed below the level of evaluated systematic uncertainties for state-of-the-art optical atomic clocks. Additionally, we demonstrate that excitation of the atomic dipoles near a Bragg angle can enhance these effects by nearly an order of magnitude compared to non-resonant geometries. Given the remarkable precision of frequency measurements and the high accuracy of the modeled response, our work demonstrates that such a clock is a novel platform for studies of the quantum many-body physics of spins with long-range interactions mediated by propagating photons.

Calcium imaging data from: Functional organization of visual responses in the octopus optic lobe

Cephalopods are highly visual animals with camera-type eyes, large brains, and a rich repertoire of visually guided behaviors. However, the cephalopod brain evolved independently from that of other highly visual species, such as vertebrates, and therefore the neural circuits that process sensory information are profoundly different. It is largely unknown how their powerful but unique visual system functions, since there have been no direct neural measurements of visual responses in the cephalopod brain. In this study, we used two-photon calcium imaging to record visually evoked responses in the primary visual processing center of the octopus central brain, the optic lobe, to determine how basic features of the visual scene are represented and organized. We found spatially localized receptive fields for light (ON) and dark (OFF) stimuli, which were retinotopically organized across the optic lobe, demonstrating a hallmark of visual system organization shared across many species. Examination of these responses revealed transformations of the visual representation across the layers of the optic lobe, including the emergence of the OFF pathway and increased size selectivity. We also identified asymmetries in the spatial processing of ON and OFF stimuli, which suggest unique circuit mechanisms for form processing that may have evolved to suit the specific demands of processing an underwater visual scene. This study provides insight into the neural processing and functional organization of the octopus visual system, highlighting both shared and unique aspects, and lays a foundation for future studies of the neural circuits that mediate visual processing and behavior in cephalopods.

Source data for: Raman sideband cooling of molecules in an optical tweezer array

Ultracold molecules, because of their rich internal structures and interactions, have been proposed as a promising platform for quantum science and precision measurement. Direct laser-cooling promises to be a rapid and efficient way to bring molecules to ultracold temperatures. For trapped molecules, laser-cooling to the quantum motional ground state remains an outstanding challenge. A technique capable of reaching the motional ground state is Raman sideband cooling, first demonstrated in trapped ions and atoms. In this work, we demonstrate for the first time Raman sideband cooling of molecules. Specifically, we demonstrate 3D Raman cooling for single CaF molecules trapped in an optical tweezer array, achieving average radial (axial) motional occupation as low as $\bar{n}_r=0.27(7)$ ($\bar{n}_z=7.0(10)$). Notably, we measure a 1D ground state fraction as high as 0.79(4), and a motional entropy per particle of $s = 4.9(3)$, the lowest reported for laser-cooled molecules to date. These lower temperatures could enable longer coherence times and higher fidelity molecular qubit gates desirable for quantum information processing and quantum simulation. With further improvements, Raman cooling could also be a new route towards molecular quantum degeneracy applicable to many laser-coolable molecular species including polyatomic ones.
