Data from: Effect of storage condition on the physicochemical properties of corn-wheat starch / zein edible bilayer films

<p>The functional properties of biopolymer-based film packaging materials are susceptible to external storage conditions. The effects of different storage temperature, relative humidity (RH) and duration on the apparent form, barrier properties, mechanical properties and microstructure of corn-wheat starch/zein bilayer films were studied. From 0 to 150 d, storage temperature and RH, but not storage time, affected the appearance and colour of the bilayer films. The increase in haze of the bilayer films stored at 25°C was much greater than that at low temperatures. With increased storage time, the moisture content first increased and then decreased, while the water resistance and oxygen barrier properties of the bilayer films worsened. After 150 d, the bilayer film stored at 25°C with 54% RH had better water resistance properties. The oxygen barrier properties of the bilayer film stored at 25°C with 43% RH were preferable to those of other groups because the peroxide value of vegetable oil packed in the former bilayer film was the lowest. The tensile strength of bilayer films stored at 25°C with RH of 43%, 54%, and 65% decreased, but were still better than those stored at low temperatures (-17°C, 4°C), which were tough due to their high elongation at break. SEM results showed tight bonds between the bilayer films, and the network structure inside the films disappeared and reappeared during storage. The cross-sectional compactness changed, and there was no film separation after 150 d.</p>

Data from: Physical, chemical, and functional properties of neuronal membranes vary between species of Antarctic notothenioids differing in thermal tolerance

Disruption of neuronal function is likely to influence limits to thermal tolerance. We hypothesized that with acute warming the structure and function of neuronal membranes in the Antarctic notothenioid fish Chaenocephalus aceratus are more vulnerable to perturbation than membranes in the more thermotolerant notothenioid Notothenia coriiceps. Fluidity was quantified in synaptic membranes, mitochondrial membranes, and myelin from brains of both species of Antarctic fishes. Polar lipid compositions and cholesterol contents were analyzed in myelin; cholesterol was measured in synaptic membranes. Thermal profiles were determined for activities of two membrane-associated proteins, acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and Na+/K+-ATPase (NKA), from brains of animals maintained at ambient temperature or exposed to their critical thermal maxima (CTMAX). Synaptic membranes of C. aceratus were consistently more fluid than those of N. coriiceps (P &lt; 0.0001). Although the fluidities of both myelin and mitochondrial membranes were similar among species, sensitivity of myelin fluidity to in vitro warming was greater in N. coriiceps than in C. aceratus (P &lt; 0.001), which can be explained by lower cholesterol contents in myelin of N. coriiceps (P &lt; 0.05). Activities of both enzymes, AChE and NKA, declined upon CTMAX exposure in C. aceratus, but not in N. coriiceps. We suggest that hyper-fluidization of synaptic membranes with warming in C. aceratus may explain the greater stenothermy in this species, and that thermal limits in notothenioids are more likely to be influenced by perturbations in synaptic membranes than in other membranes of the nervous system.

Data from: Elevated atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide reduce monarch tolerance and increase parasite virulence by altering the medicinal properties of milkweeds

Hosts combat their parasites using mechanisms of resistance and tolerance, which together determine parasite virulence. Environmental factors, including diet, mediate the impact of parasites on hosts, with diet providing nutritional and medicinal properties. Here, we present the first evidence that ongoing environmental change decreases host tolerance and increases parasite virulence through a loss of dietary medicinal quality. Monarch butterflies use dietary toxins (cardenolides) to reduce the deleterious impacts of a protozoan parasite. We fed monarch larvae foliage from four milkweed species grown under either elevated or ambient CO2, and measured changes in resistance, tolerance, and virulence. The most high-cardenolide milkweed species lost its medicinal properties under elevated CO2; monarch tolerance to infection decreased, and parasite virulence increased. Declines in medicinal quality were associated with declines in foliar concentrations of lipophilic cardenolides. Our results emphasize that global environmental change may influence parasite-host interactions through changes in the medicinal properties of plants.

High Throughput Exploration of Structure-Property Linkages in Dual Phase Steel

<p>Structure property linkage was studied in this research on a dual phase steel through microindentation and different microstructural characterization techniques; EBSD, SEM. A combination of intercritical annealing temperature and bake hardening provides nine different microstructures and as a result different strength values. Three intercritical temperatures result in&nbsp;different&nbsp;volume fractions of martensite. Additional cold work of 5 and 10 % thickness reduction followed by bake hardening is another parameter which results in strengthening. Samples were labeled in the format of aaa-bb-ccc; where aaa, bb, ccc represent intercritical annealing temperature, amount of cold work, and temperature of bake hardening respectively. The data set includes three kind of data: SEM images, EBSD scans, and microindebtation. Each folder set contains raw data and metadata related to testing settings.&nbsp;Quantification&nbsp;of&nbsp;microstructure&nbsp;is done using two point correlation and principle component analysis to find most important&nbsp;microstructural&nbsp;features&nbsp;in this material. Indentation strength for each&nbsp;processing paths were measured using spherical&nbsp;indentation&nbsp;technique.&nbsp;</p>

Evaporation and permeameter data hydraulic properties stony soil

<p>We used the evaporation method to determine the hydraulic conductivity and the retention curve of a soil sample. The principle of this method is to simultaneously measure the matric head at different depths and the water content of an initially saturated soil sample submitted to evaporation.</p> <p>The experiments were performed over cylindrical Plexiglas samples of 1 L (height: 65 mm), perforated at the bottom to allow saturation from below and open to atmosphere on the upper side to allow evaporation of the soil moisture. Four 6 mm-long ceramic tensiometers (SDEC230) were introduced at 10, 25, 40 and 55 mm in height, respectively denoted T1 to T4 (the reference level is located at the bottom of the sample). In order to avoid preferential flow due to the introduction of the tensiometers on a same vertical line, each hole of the sample was horizontally shifted of 12 degrees vis-&agrave;-vis the center of the tube. The tensiometers are connected through a tube to a pressure transducer (DPT-100, DELTRAN). The setup was filled with degased water. The variation in pressure of the drying soil was recorded every 15 min by a CR800 (CAMPBELL SCIENTIFIC). Tensions beyond the consolidation point were not taken into account. The consolidation point refers to the state from which the measured pressure head starts to decrease as bubbles appear and water vapour accumulates (typically 68 kPa cm in this case).</p> <p>The total water loss as a function of time was monitored by a balance (OHAUS) with a sensitivity of 0.2 g with an accuracy of &nbsp;1 g with a time resolution of 15 min. A 50 W infrared lamp was positioned 1 m above the sample surface to slightly speed up the evaporation process. The light was turned off for the first 24 hours of every experiment, as the evaporation rate is already high in a saturated sample. A measuring campaign lasted until 3 of the 4 tensiometers ran dry (the tension sharply drops down to approximately a null value). At the end of the experiment, the sample was oven dried for 24 hours at 105&deg;C to estimate the .</p>

Comparison of Friction Properties Among Diverse Conventional-Ligating Lingual Bracket Systems According To Tooth Displacement During Leveling And Alignment: An In Vitro Mechanical Study

<p>The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of tooth displacement on frictional force when conventional-ligating lingual brackets (CL-LB), CL-LBs with narrow bracket width and customized CL-LBs were used with leveling/alignment wire.&nbsp;</p> <p>CL-LBs (7<sup>th</sup>Generation), CL-LBs with narrow bracket width (STb) and customized CL-LBs (Incognito) were tested under three conditions of tooth displacement [no displacement (control); 1mm palatal displacement (PD) of the maxillary right lateral incisor (MXLI); and 1mm gingival displacement (GD) of the maxillary right canine (MXC)](9 groups, <em>n</em>=6 per group). Static (SFF) and kinetic frictional forces (KFF) were measured in a stereolithographic typodont system and artificial saliva while drawing a 0.016-inch copper or super-elastic nickel-titanium archwire at a speed of 0.5 mm/min for 5 minutes at 36.5&deg;C.</p>
