Identifying profiles of parental (de)motivating behaviors in youth sports through cluster analysis: A Multi-informant Approach

<p>Based on the perceptions of 331 youth athletes (<em>M</em><sub>age</sub>=14.33) and their most involved parent (<em>M</em><sub>age</sub> = 45.96), this study examined whether different profiles of parental behavior (i.e.,autonomy, competence, and relatedness supportive and thwarting) can be identified, to what extent these profiles match between the perceptions of athletes and parents, and how these profiles relate to youth athletes&rsquo; need-based experiences, (a)motivation, (dis)engagement, and anxiety regarding their sports participation. Cluster analysis identified four parental profiles based on both athlete and parent perceptions: parents who are relatively (1) need-supportive, (2) need-thwarting, (3) predominantly controlling, and (4) distant. In general, parents rated themselves as more motivating and less demotivating compared to the athlete&rsquo;s perception. Moreover, parents&#39; self-assessment had little to no predictive power in terms of the athlete&rsquo;s sports experience. However, athletes who perceived their parents as need-supportive displayed the most adaptive outcomes, whereas the opposite was true for the need-thwarting profile. The two other profiles were situated in between, with athletes in the predominantly controlling profile scoring high on both the adaptive and maladaptive outcomes, and athletes in the distant profile scoring low on the maladaptive outcomes but not necessarily high on the adaptive outcomes.</p>

<p>&nbsp;This record contains raw data related to article &ldquo;</p> <p>Sport Activity and Clinical Outcomes after Hip Arthroscopy with Acetabular Microfractures at a Minimum 2-Year Follow-Up: A Matched-Pair Controlled Study&quot;</p> <p>Abstract: Background: Acetabular microfractures for cartilage lesions have been shown to be a safe procedure able to improve patient reported outcomes (PROs). Nevertheless, the return to sport activity rate represents a crucial outcome to be investigated in these young athletic patients. Methods: Patients undergoing acetabular microfracture for full chondral acetabular lesions were compared to a 1:1 matched-pair by age and gender control group undergoing hip arthroscopy without microfractures. Clinical assessment was performed with PROs and participation in sports in terms of type and level of activities was evaluated preoperatively and at 2-years follow-up. Results: A total of 62 patients with an average age of 35.1 &plusmn; 8.1 (microfracture group) and 36.4 &plusmn; 6.3 (control group) were included. In both groups, the average values of PROs significantly increased from preoperatively to the last follow-up. There was no significant difference between the two groups in the number of patients playing at the amateur and elite level preoperatively and at the last follow-up. Conclusions: Microfractures for the management of full-thickness acetabular chondral defect provides good clinical results at a minimum follow-up of two years, which are not inferior to a matched-pair control group. Patients undergoing this procedure are likely able to return at the same level of sport before surgery.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Predictors and Outcomes of Sports Coaches' Athlete-Invested Contingent Self-worth

<p>Some sports coaches not only invest considerable time and energy in their athletes, but also attach their self-worth to the successes and failures of their athletes. Grounded in Self-Determination Theory, the present study aimed to examine the predictors and outcomes of such Athlete-Invested Contingent Self-worth (AICS). The findings of a cross-sectional study (Study 1; <em>N</em> = 740, <em>M</em><sub>age</sub> = 34.37 years) and an experimental vignette-based study among youth sports coaches (Study 2; <em>N</em> = 318, <em>M</em><sub>age</sub> = 38.94 years) indicated that AICS related positively to a controlling coaching style and negatively to a structuring style. Study 1 showed that an evaluative climate as induced by board members related positively to AICS, with Study 2 further demonstrating that contingent self-worth is rooted in need frustration that is provoked by an evaluative climate. The discussion focuses on the pitfalls of coaches&rsquo; contingent self-worth for their athletes&rsquo; development.</p>
