Simulations scripts for: Strain localization patterns and thrust propagation in 3-D discrete element method (DEM) models of accretionary wedges
<p>High-resolution three-dimensional discrete element method (DEM) simulations of sandbox-scale models of accretionary wedges performed in this study suggest thrusts follow a variety of propagation processes and orientations in the wedges depending on a number of factors including the stage of development of the wedge (precritical vs. critical), basal friction, and type of thrust (forward vs. backward-vergent). In terms of propagation processes, two clear mechanisms are identified. The first involves propagation from the decollement to the wedge top, similar to the standard model of thrust propagation seen in many kinematic models, and in the second, thrusts grow downward from an initial nucleation point just below the top surface of the wedge as well as upward from the decollement joining in the middle. In terms of orientation, forward-vergent thrusts initially form at Roscoe or Arthur orientations, and over shortening, form at Coulomb orientations. To arrive at these results, a wide array of continuum parameters and fields were extracted from the granular assembly of the DEM simulations, including stress, strain, strain rate, kinetic energy, Mohr-Coulomb parameters, and proximity to yielding using the Drucker-Prager criterion to visualize thrust nucleation and propagation. Lastly, the advantages and disadvantages of these continuum proxies for discerning failure in the granular assembly are considered, and the spatial and temporal relationship between proximity to yielding and strain localization (both pre-peak and persistent shear banding) in the granular model of an accretionary wedge is explored.</p>
Pre-CSRM: A 3-D seismic model of the shallow crust in continental China
<p>This high-resolution shallow three-dimensional seismic model is constructed for the top 10 km of the upper crust in continental China, based on the constraints of P polarization, Rayleigh wave ellipticity and receiver function obtained from records of <strong>3848</strong> seismic stations during 1990 and 2017. The model has a spatial resolution of 0.3 degree * 0.3 degree in the north-south seismic belt and the trans-north China orogen, and 0.5 degree * 0.5 degree in the rest of continental China (except the Tarim basin and southwest Tibet with no station coverage). The seismic constraints used for the construction of the model consist of the <strong>5,439,702</strong> polarization angle measurements from the P-wave waveforms of 9361 tele-seismic earthquakes, the short-period (4 - 8 s) Rayleigh wave ellipticity estimated from the continuous waveforms of seismic ambient noise, and the stacked receiver functions estimated from <strong>2,125,021</strong> original receiver functions calculated based on the waveforms of 9361 tele-seismic events. 3-D Shear Wave Velocity (Vs) & Crustal Interface (Sediment Basement & Moho) Models of Borneo, Makassar Strait, & Sulawesi Region
<p>An update version of 3-D Shear Wave Velocity (Vs) & Crustal Interface (Sediment Basement & Moho) Models of Borneo, Makassar Strait and Sulawesi region obtained from group velocity tomography. Group velocity is retrieved from dispersion analysis of Rayleigh waves extracted from the ambient noise field by cross-correlating long-term recordings from 108 seismic stations over a period of 8 months (the stacked cross-correlations data are included). A 3-D shear wave velocity model then are produced via a two-stage process in which group velocity maps are computed across a range of periods and then sampled over a dense grid of points to produce pseudo-dispersion curves; these dispersion curves are then separately inverted for 1-D shear wave velocity (Vs), with the resultant models combined and interpolated to form a 3-D model.</p>
