Data from: Neuron numbers link innovativeness with both absolute and relative brain size in birds

A long-standing issue in biology is whether the intelligence of animals can be predicted by absolute or relative brain size. However, progress has been hampered by an insufficient understanding of how neuron numbers shape internal brain organization and cognitive performance. Based on estimations of neuron numbers for 111 bird species, we show here that the number of neurons in the pallial telencephalon is positively associated with a major expression of intelligence: innovation propensity. The number of pallial neurons, in turn, is greater in brains that are larger in both absolute and relative terms, and positively co-varies with longer post-hatching development periods. Thus, our analyses show that neuron numbers link cognitive performance to both absolute and relative brain size through developmental adjustments. These findings help unify neuro-anatomical measures at multiple levels, reconciling contradictory views over the biological significance of brain expansion. The results also highlight the value of a life history perspective to advance our understanding of the evolutionary bases of the connections between brain and cognition.

Methane is the simplest member of the paraffin series of hydrocarbons and is among the most potent of the greenhouse gases. Methane is lighter than air, having a specific gravity of 0.554. It is only slightly soluble in water. It burns readily in air, forming carbon dioxide and water vapour; the flame is pale, slightly luminous, and very hot. Methane in general is very stable, but mixtures of methane and air, with the methane content between 5 and 14 percent by volume, are explosive. Explosions of such mixtures have been frequent in coal mines and collieries and have been the cause of many mine disasters. Methane is an important source of hydrogen and some organic chemicals.

Temperature (degrees kelvin), Temperature (degrees Celsius), Temperature (degrees Fahrenheit), Pressure (bars), Pressure (pound-force per square inch), Absolute viscosity (micro-pascals-seconds), Absolute viscosity (centipoises)

90.694 -182.46 -296.42 0.1170 1.696 204.5 0.2045

100 -173 -280 0.3438 4.986 155.8 0.1558

110 -163 -262 0.8813 12.78 121.3 0.1213

120 -153 -244 1.914 27.76 97.43 0.09743

130 -143 -226 3.673 53.28 79.87 0.07987

140 -133 -208 6.412 93.00 66.33 0.06633

150 -123 -190 10.40 150.8 55.44 0.05544

160 -113 -172 15.92 230.9 46.27 0.04627

170 -103 -154 23.28 337.7 38.12 0.03812

Contributor: Junjie Chen, ORCID: 0000-0001-5055-4309, E-mail address: komcjj@gmail.com, Department of Energy and Power Engineering, School of Mechanical and Power Engineering, Henan Polytechnic University, 2000 Century Avenue, Jiaozuo, Henan, 454000, P.R. Hosts winnow symbionts with multiple layers of absolute and conditional discrimination mechanisms

In mutualism, hosts select symbionts via partner choice and preferentially direct more resources to symbionts that provide greater benefits via sanctions. At the initiation of symbiosis, prior to resource exchange, it is not known how the presence of multiple symbiont options (i.e., the symbiont social environment) impacts partner choice outcomes. Furthermore, little research addresses whether hosts primarily discriminate among symbionts via sanctions, partner choice or a combination. We inoculated the legume, Acmispon wrangelianus, with 28 pairs of fluorescently labeled Mesorhizobium strains that vary continuously in quality as nitrogen-fixing symbionts. We find that hosts exert robust partner choice, which enhances their fitness. This partner choice is conditional such that a strain's success in initiating nodules is impacted by other strains in the social environment. This social genetic effect is as important as a strain's own genotype in determining nodulation and has both transitive (consistent) and intransitive (idiosyncratic) effects on the probability that a symbiont will form a nodule. Furthermore, both absolute and conditional partner choice act in concert with sanctions, among and within nodules. Thus, multiple forms of host discrimination act as a series of sieves that optimize host benefits and select for costly symbiont cooperation in mixed symbiont populations.

Dataset related to the article "Extraction-Free Absolute Quantification of Circulating miRNAs by Chip-Based Digital PCR"

This record contains raw data related to the article "Extraction-Free Absolute Quantification of Circulating miRNAs by Chip-Based Digital PCR"

Circulating microRNAs (miRNA) have been proposed as specific biomarkers for several diseases. Quantitative Real-Time PCR (RT-qPCR) is the gold standard technique currently used to evaluate miRNAs expression from different sources. In the last few years, digital PCR (dPCR) emerged as a complementary and accurate detection method. When dealing with gene expression, the first and most delicate step is nucleic-acid isolation. However, all currently available protocols for RNA extraction suffer from the variable loss of RNA species due to the chemicals and number of steps involved, from sample lysis to nucleic acid elution. Here, we evaluated a new process for the detection of circulating miRNAs, consisting of sample lysis followed by direct evaluation by dPCR in plasma from healthy donors and in the cardiovascular setting. Our results showed that dPCR is able to detect, with high accuracy, low-copy-number as well as highly expressed miRNAs in human plasma samples without the need for RNA extraction. Moreover, we assessed a known myocardial infarction-related miR-133a in acute myocardial infarct patients vs. healthy subjects. In conclusion, our results show the suitability of the extraction-free quantification of circulating miRNAs as disease markers by direct dPCR.
