GNSS troposphere products from a network of low-cost GNSS receivers, Wroclaw, Poland, March-April 2021

<p>This dataset contains multi-GNSS troposphere products, i.e. ECEF coordinates, zenith total delay (ZTD), and horizontal gradients, together with their uncertainties. These products were obtained using 3 processing strategies:</p> <p>1) real-time (for details see https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10291-020-01014-w, under to &quot;advanced strategy&quot; configuration, with the exception that only GPS and Galileo observations were considered);</p> <p>2) near real-time (NRT, for details see http://egvap.dmi.dk/);</p> <p>3) final (using CSRS online service, https://webapp.geod.nrcan.gc.ca/geod/tools-outils/ppp.php).</p> <p>Products are stored as standard Matlab MAT files. Each file contains a set of table arrays (Matlab format). Each table array contains the selected set of estimated parameters for a single station. Table columns are labeled and self-explanatory. Composition and biolability of dissolved organic matter from arctic and boreal streams April 2015 - May 2016

In this study, we collected samples throughout the year from up to eight streams along an arctic-boreal gradient in interior Alaska, ranging from discontinuous to continuous permafrost. We measured dissolved organic matter (DOM) biolability and nutrient limitation of decomposition through laboratory incubations of streamwater, and characterized DOM composition through optical properties and chemical analysis.

Macroalgae Production in Florida Bay (FCE LTER), South Florida, USA, May 2007 - April 2023

Benthic primary production in Florida Bay is mainly driven by mangroves, seagrass, peryphiton, and macroalgae. The nutrient dynamics and salinity regimes at Florida Bay are strongly influenced by marine waters from the Gulf of Mexico, oceanic waters from the Atlantic Ocean and fresh waters from the Everglades creating a complex estuary with oligohaline ecotones. Marine and groundwater are sources of P and are expected to decline with increased freshwater inflow (Childers et al. 2006a; Price et al. 2006). The Taylor Slough ecotone, (TS/Ph), which flows into the Bay, is characterized by small tidal influence and clear seasonal variability in water source and quality (Davis et al. 2003; Sutula et al. 2001), receives P from shallow groundwater inputs (Price et al. 2006).Therefore the amount of freshwater inputs from the Everglades will affect salinity, water residence times, and the sources, availability, and flux of organic and inorganic nutrients on Florida Bay. As a consequence gradients of N and P concentrations are characteristic in the Bay with expected low concentration of P and high N on the fresh water end, contrasting with higher levels of P and lower of N towards the marine section of the Bay. This gradient in P concentrations is expected to reflect in differences in both primary production and biomass along the TS/Ph ecotone. One of the Everglades LTER scientist general hypothesis is "that increasing inputs of freshwater will enhance oligotrophy in nutrient-poor coastal systems, as long as the inflowing water has low nutrient content; this dynamic will be most pronounced in the oligohaline ecotone" (LTER program). In this context we expect to have a differential production of calcareous macroalgae along the TS-Ph transect which reflect the P gradient with low productivity towards the fresh water influenced sites close to the Everglades increasing towards the marine section of the Bay. Non-continous meteorological data from Butternut Key Weather Tower, Florida Bay, Everglades National Park (FCE LTER), April 2001 through August 2013

The following abstract is from Price, R.M., Nuttle, W.K., Cosby, B.J., and Swart, P.K. 2007. Variation and Uncertainty in Evaporation from a Subtropical Estuary: Florida Bay, Estuaries and Coasts. 30(3): 497-506: Variation and uncertainty in estimated evaporation was determined over time and between two locations in Florida Bay, a subtropical estuary. Meteorological data were collected from September 2001 to August 2002 at Rabbit Key and Butternut Key within the Bay. Evaporation was estimated using both vapor flux and energy budget methods. The results were placed into a long-term context using 33 years of temperature and rainfall data collected in south Florida. Evaporation also was estimated from this long-term data using an empirical formula relating evaporation to clear sky solar radiation and air temperature. Evaporation estimates for the 12-mo period ranged from 144 to 175 cm yr21, depending on location and method, with an average of 163 cm yr21 (6 9%). Monthly values ranged from 9.2 to 18.5 cm, with the highest value observed in May, corresponding with the maximum in measured net radiation. Uncertainty estimates derived from measurement errors in the data were as much as 10%, and were large enough to obscure differences in evaporation between the two sites. Differences among all estimates for any month indicate the overall uncertainty in monthly evaporation, and ranged from 9% to 26%. Over a 33-yr period (1970 to 2002), estimated annual evaporation from Florida Bay ranged from 148 to 181 cm yr21, with an average of 166 cm yr21. Rainfall was consistently lower in Florida Bay than evaporation, with a long-term average of 106 cm yr21. Rainfall considered alone was uncorrelated with evaporation at both monthly and annual time scales; when the seasonal variation in clear sky radiation was also taken into account both net radiation and evaporation were significantly suppressed in months with high rainfall.

Biogeochemical data collected from Northeast Shark River Slough, Everglades National Park, Florida, USA, September 2006 - April 2025

This project was established in 2006 to document the pattern of abundance of key ecological indicators (e.g., surface water, soil, floc, periphyton and sawgrass) across the NESRS landscape. A total of 30 sites were established and monitored in 2006, 2007 and 2008. After the completion of 1-mile bridge in 2012, additional 10 new sites were established to observe the ecological impact of 1-mile bridge (known as Bridge & Census sites). In 2015, additional 40 sites were established along eight transects (T1-T8, known as near canal sites) in ENP marshes starting at, and roughly perpendicular to the L-29 canal. The purpose of these sites was to monitor the potential effects of Modified Water Deliveries (MWD) operations on changing nutrient concentrations and ratios in key ecological compartments due to increased downstream discharges from the L-29 canal beneath the 1-mile and 2.6-mile bridges and culverts along Tamiami Trail. Data collection is complete.

Root productivity of riverine and scrub mangroves from the Shark River Slough and Taylor Slough, Everglades National Park (FCE LTER), Florida, USA, March 2024 - April 2024

Root productivity of riverine and scrub mangroves in the Florida Everglades: Mangrove root productivity in the shallow root zone (0-45 cm depth) was estimated at all Shark River (SRS-4, SRS-5, SRS-6, SRS-7) and Taylor River (TS/Ph-6, TS/Ph-7) sites in March-April 2024. Root productivity was estimated with the ingrowth core technique using the same sampling protocol previously published for the study area (Castañeda-Moya et al. 2011). Ingrowth cores (10.2 cm diameter x 45 cm length) were made of synthetic material (3 mm mesh) and filled with root-free commercial sphagnum peat moss. This material has similar soil properties (i.e., bulk density, organic matter content, total C and N) as mangrove peat in our study sites as previously reported by Castañeda-Moya et al. (2011). Ingrowth cores were installed in holes made out with a PVC coring device (10.2 cm diameter x 45 cm length). At each site, 8 ingrowth cores were deployed vertically into the soil to a depth of 45 cm and retrieved one year later (March-April 2024). After collection, ingrowth cores were processed individually and initially rinsed with water through a 1-mm screen mesh to remove soil particles and peat moss material. Live roots were separated manually based on their buoyancy, turgor, and color (Castañeda-Moya et al. 2011; Cormier et al. 2015; Medina-Calderon et al. 2021). Live roots were further sorted into three size diameter classes including fine (<2 mm), small (2-5 mm), and coarse (5-20 mm). Roots greater than 20 mm in diameter were not included in this study due to sampling limitations (i.e., core area). All root samples were oven-dried at 60°C to a constant mass and weighed. Root growth within each ingrowth core following one year of incubation was used to estimate annual root productivity (g m⁻² yr⁻¹) in the shallow root zone across all mangrove sites. Benthic chlorophyll concentrations and gross oxygenic photosynthesis rates in surficial estuarine intertidal sediments at sites on Sapelo Island and near the Satilla River from January, April, June and July 2001

Seasonal patterns of estuarine creek-bank and intertidal marsh benthic chlorophyll and gross oxygenic photosynthesis were investigated at several sites on Sapelo Island and the Satilla River in coastal Georgia. Benthic chlorophyll were measured in the bulk surface centimeter depth of sediment. Gross oxygenic photosynthesis rates were integrated over 100 um resolution measurements below the sediment water interface using oxygen microelectrodes. Several relatively pristine sites on Sapelo Island (Moses Hammock, Dean Creek and Marine Institute) and a presumably heavily impacted site (Dover Bluff) show similar levels of chlorophyll concentration and photosynthesis rate across bank and marsh zones with higher photosynthetic biomass and activity in the spring season. Nutrient inputs to these study sites are also suggested as a control on gross oxygenic photosynthesis rates as evidenced by a relationship between photosynthesis rate and land-use.

Plant richness survey of mainland and barrier island locations along the Texas Gulf Coast in April and May 2005

I conducted a plant richness survey of 49 sites on the Texas Gulf Coast in the Spring (April-May) of 2005. Sites were chosen to include a range of mainland and barrier island locations. All sites were dominated by salt marsh plant species, primarily Spartina alterniflora. To provide a general indication of the salinity conditions prevailing at each site, I measured salinity of the nearest body of water with a refractometer on the date that the site was sampled. Plant richness was documented along a single 5.0m wide transect at each site. Each transect began at the lower elevational limit of vegetation and continued perpendicular to the water’s edge to the shrub community at the upper marsh border. Plant presence was noted in a series of nested subplots within a 1.0m x 5.0m plot at each meter along the transect. The results posted here are sites, position, salinity, and the site pool, or species encountered at the site. This data set is a companion to PLT-GCET-0608, which provides similar data for sites around Sapelo Island, Georgia.

Long-term water quality monitoring on the Altamaha River and major tributaries from September 2000 through April 2009

Water samples were collected from the Altamaha River (approximately weekly) and several tributaries (bimonthly) from September 2000 through September 2001. Samples were then collected at less frequent intervals from September 2001 through April 2009. The concentration of dissolved nutrients (ammonium, nitrate+nitrite, phosphate, silicate), dissolved organics (DOC, DON, DOP) and total suspended solids were measured using standard methods. The concentrations of 20 elements (Al, B, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, P, Pb, Si, Sr and Zn) were also determined using elemental analysis by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Total dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) was measured using a custom automated DIC analyzer. Total alkalinity (TA)was determined by Gran titration and pH of surface water was measured using a glass electrode.

Comparative transect surveys of invertebrate abundance, plant cover, and sediment characteristics in Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico salt marshes from April 2009 to September 2010

Understanding the relative strengths of top-down and bottom-up forces is an important key to predicting the structure of biological communities. The strength of these effects can be regulated in part by predator abundance and nutrient availability. In 2009, we hypothesized that the importance of these factors varies geographically between the southeastern Atlantic Coast and the Gulf Coast due to differences in tidal regime, and began to study this variation using a biogeographic, manipulative field experiment. Although our original purpose was to understand the structure of salt marsh arthropod food webs, BP's Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf Coast presented an opportunity to understand how stress from an oil spill might affect the variables that we were measuring. The fact that we had plots and transect sampling in place at multiple sites along the Gulf and East Coasts put us in a position to evaluate any impacts that might occur if oil hit some of the sites. The study was conducted at 11 sites across the Gulf Coast, from Texas to Florida, and 11 sites along the Atlantic Coast, from Florida to Maine. At each site, experimental plots were sampled and a 100m transect was sampled near the plots within 5m of the high marsh boundary. Sampling was conducted in May 2009, August 2009, and August 2010. In 2010, four extra sites were added to the existing experimental sites because of known oil contamination, and another site was added as an extra control. Only the transect sampling was conducted at these sites. This dataset contains all the transect data; data from experimental plots will be reported in a companion dataset.

Population Study of Geukensia demissa and Ilyanassa obsoleta at the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER site in April 2008

During the dates of April 21-April 23, 2008, we conducted surveys to determine the relative abundance of ribbed mussels (Geukensia demissa) and mud snails (Ilyanassa obsoleta) across Spartina height zones. Surveys were performed at each of the GCE long term sites (GCE1-GCE10) and were comprised of transect and quadrat sampling methods. Quadrats measured 25 cm^2 for mud snails and 1 m^2 for ribbed mussels. Ribbed mussel surveys consisted of both transect and quadrat methods. For ribbed mussels, a total of 10 quadrats were randomly placed in tall-, mid-, and short-form Spartina and number of visible mussels counted. Transects for ribbed mussels measured 50 m x 2 m and were performed in intermediate- and short-form Spartina zones. In each transect, we counted observed number of mussel clumps per transect. For mud snails, a total of 10 quadrats were randomly placed in tall- and intermediate-form Spartina and on mud banks (2 m from Spartina edge along the creek bank) and total number of individuals per quadrat were counted.

Monthly vertical profiles of salinity, temperature, pressure, oxygen and photosynthetically-available radiation in Sapelo River, Doboy Sound, Duplin River and Altamaha River transect surveys from April 2008 to April 2015

Monthly hydrographic surveys were performed along the Sapelo River, Doboy Sound, Duplin River and Altamaha River from April 2008 to April 2015. Vertical CTD profiles were collected from the surface to bottom during low and high tide phases at fixed stations chosen to coincide with long-term GCE-LTER moorings. Conductivity, temperature, pressure, photosynthetically-available radiation (PAR) and oxygen concentration were measured at 8 Hz using a SeaBird Electronics SBE-37 instrument, and depth, salinity and sigma-t and oxygen saturation were calculated using UNESCO algorithms. Data values collected during the upcast were deleted. This data set was collected as part of the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER monthly hydrographic monitoring program, and will be updated approximately annually to include the latest observations.
