Data from: Nitrogen acquisition of Central European herbaceous plants that differ in their global naturalization success

<p>It is frequently assumed that species capable of fast nitrogen (N) acquisition under different N-availability conditions should have a higher establishment success after their introduction into new regions. However, few experimental studies have explicitly tested this. Our multispecies experiment tested whether global naturalization success of plant species native to Central Europe is related to a high N-acquisition ability.</p> <p>We selected 41 common herbaceous species native to Germany that have all become naturalized, and thus been introduced, elsewhere. Twenty-two of these species are widely naturalized and 19 are less widely naturalized. We grew the 41 grassland species, sampled in Germany, under low and high N conditions in a greenhouse experiment, and assessed their N-acquisition abilities.</p> <p>Although the widely naturalized species grew faster on average, they had a significantly lower N-uptake rate than the less widely naturalized ones. The widely naturalized species, however, had a marginally significantly higher root-mass fraction. Despite these differences, the total plant N-content did on average not differ between the two groups of species. However, N addition tended to increase the total plant N-content more for the widely naturalized species than for the less widely naturalized species. Nitrogen addition also increased biomass production and N-uptake rate, and decreased the root-mass fraction of plants, but these responses did not differ between widely and less widely naturalized species.</p> <p>We conclude that although fast-growing species tend to have a higher global naturalization success than slow-growing species, the naturalization success of plants is not necessarily related to a high N-acquisition ability.</p>

Hyperspectral imager acquisitions from SMART Soils Test Bed, 2022-04-18

<p>Hyperpsectral imager data retrieved over the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab SMART Soils Test Bed on 2022-04-18 at three times (11:20, 12:34, 13:44). Radiance data (mW cm−2 μm−1 sr−1) subset to bands of interest over the Headwall Hyperspec Imager's 680-800nm range (680-682, 757-652, 769-772, and 778-780 nm) to retrieve RED, NIR, NDVI and SIF while minimizing file size. Data associated with Ruehr et al. 2023, 'Quantifying seasonal and diurnal cycles of solar-induced fluorescence with a novel hyperspectral imager,' submitted to Geophysical Research Letters in November 2023. Feral pig (Sus scrofa) disturbance facilitates establishment of resource-acquisitive species in Hawaiian forest understories

<p>In this study, we quantify the effects of leaf traits and dispersal attributes on species responses to pig soil disturbance at two spatial scales – 0.5 m<sup>2</sup> patches embedded along 20 m transects within sites – across a gradient of pig density in a Hawaiian montane wet forest using Bayesian mixed models. </p> <p>Native and non-native species demonstrated divergent responses, with increasing presence and abundance of non-native species in the understory as soil disturbance within patches and sites increased. Dominant patterns in measured traits tracked the leaf economic spectrum (LES), with non-native species tending toward resource-acquisitive traits. Species with resource-acquisitive traits, regardless of identity, were favored with disturbance and responded positively to light availability in disturbed sites. Models showed species primarily dispersed by wind were more prevalent in disturbed patches and sites than those dispersed by endozoochory, while seed mass had no effect.</p>

As in A. poecilochroum, the ingested cryptophyte organelles are encircled by a single membrane; D – Dinophysis spp. The arrow means that the plastids escape from the food vacuole and move to the cytoplasm of the dinoflagellate; E–G – cases where the mechanism for acquisition of cryptophyte organelles remains unknown. The plastids and other organelles may originate from a series of events leading to acquisition and subsequent degeneration of a whole-cell endosymbiont (i.e., an intact cryptophyte symbiont – E, F or G), or may be acquired as organelles via predation (i.e., kleptoplastidy; an ingested cryptophyte partially digested to give states shown in E, F or G); E – Amphidinium latum and Gymnodinium myriopyrenoides; F – Amylax triacantha. According to Koike and Takishita (2008), a single Amylax cell had 14 cryptophyte vestiges, of which only one was found to contain a cryptophyte nucleus (indicated by dotted line). The presence of a Golgi body and exectosome was not confirmed (indicated by question marks); G – Amphidinium wigrense retaining only plastids of cryptophyte origin.

A corpus-based study of the acquisition of the English progressive by L1 Chinese learners: From prototypical activities to marked statives

<p>This article investigates how EFL learners&rsquo; progressive markings are influenced by the lexical aspect of verbs, modality (spoken vs. written), and proficiency levels, focusing on the controversial issue of stative verbs in progressives in L2 acquisition. Spoken (SECCL) and written (WECCL) corpus data from two proficiency levels of Chinese EFL learners and comparison data from native English speakers (COCA) were analyzed. The results suggest that in both learner and native data the progressive -<em>ing</em> is strongly associated with activity verbs, stative verbs being least likely to be inflected with the progressive<em>,</em> as predicted by the Aspect Hypothesis (Andersen and Shirai 1994, 1996). However, inconsistently with the Aspect Hypothesis, this association strengthens with higher proficiency levels. Learners&rsquo; use of stative verbs in the progressive and the overextended use of stative progressives was also found to be related to spoken vs. written mode of production and proficiency levels, with learners retreating from overextension as their proficiency increases. A usage-based account of the findings is proposed.</p>

Neonate personality affects early-life resource acquisition in a large social mammal

<p>This file contains the raw data files and R-scripts used for producing the final data sets analyzed in the paper: "Neonate personality affects early-life resource acquisition in a large social mammal". A full and detailed description of the methods can be found in the manuscript, or at request from the author (BA).</p> <p> The R-scripts can be used to follow all the steps taken in producing the final data sets. The findings in the paper can be then reproduced by using the code provided in the supplementary materials (of the paper).  </p> <p>The file contains data taken from &gt;150 newborn fallow deer fawns (<em>Dama dama</em>), in two different cohorts. Data were taken at capture and recapture of these fawns, during their first weeks of life. During this period, fallow deer fawns adopt a hiding-strategy where they hide in the vegatation from potential predators. Furthermore, it contains time budget data taken at summer, when fawns were 1-2 months old, and at autumn, when fawns were 3-6 months old. The final file is a datafile that contains data on the days that fawns were spotted in a group of deer for the first time, after their hider-phase.</p> <p>We have provided a README.docx file, which contains additional descriptions of the raw data set and the variables it includes.</p>
