<p>The first video of the EPIBOOST Project, which integrates researchers Cecília Guerra and Maria José Loureiro from CIDTFF, and David Oliveira from DigiMedia, in their multidisciplinary team, is now available. As experts in Didactics and Educational Technology, researchers from CIDTFF and DigiMedia are responsible for producing scientific dissemination videos related to epigenetics, targeting society and to be disseminated on online platforms such as Educast (PT) and YouTube (for global accessibility). Dataset for KIOS CoE Sandboxing use-case SUC4 corresponding to cyber attacks affecting the Coordinated Overcurrent Protection Scheme (IEC 61850 GOOSE)
<p><span>The datasets reflect on two main scenarios (S1-S2) related to SUC4 - corresponding to cyber attacks affecting the Coordinated Overcurrent Protection Scheme. </span><span>The first scenario explores the response of the coordinated overcurrent protection when circuit breakers (CBs) are healthy, under normal operation, i.e., SUC4/S1(without attack), and the under a FDI cyberattack on IEC 61850 - GOOSE communication protocol, i.e., SUC4/S1(with FDI attack). </span>Similarly, the second scenario investigates the response of the coordinated overcurrent protection when there a mechanical failure in the CB of the downstream feeder, under normal operation, i.e., SUC4/S2(without attack), and the under a message suppresion (MS) cyber-attack on GOOSE protocol, i.e., SUC4/S2(with MS attack). Dataset for KIOS CoE Sandboxing use-case SUC5 corresponding to cyber attacks affecting the control of active distribution grids and microgrids
<p>These datasets <span> illustrate two primary scenarios (S1-S2) concerning the operation of the sandboxing use case SUC5 corresponding to cyber attacks affecting the control of active distribution grids and microgrids. These scenarios examine the functioning of an active distribution grid and microgrid system, along with the effects of certain cyber-attacks in this context. The demonstration of each scenario is detailed in selected time-series plots which were described in detail in Section </span><span>1.3 of the supporting document of SUC5 (</span><span>accompanied by an in-depth analysis of the processes and an impact assessment). Exploring mechanisms that affect coral cooperation: symbiont transmission mode, cell density and community composition
<p>This repository contains code to accompany the manuscript titled</p> <p><strong>Exploring mechanisms that affect coral cooperation: symbiont transmission mode, cell density and community composition</strong></p> <p>by <strong>Carly D. Kenkel and Line K. Bay</strong><br> </p> <p>In this study, we used a phylogenetically controlled design to investigate the role of vertical symbiont transmission, an evolutionary mechanism predicted to enhance cooperation and holobiont fitness of reef-building corals. Six species of coral, three vertical transmitters and their closest horizontally transmitting relatives, were fragmented and subjected to a two-week thermal stress experiment. Symbiont cell density, photosynthetic function and translocation of photosynthetically fixed carbon between symbionts and hosts were quantified to assess changes in physiological metrics of fitness and cooperation. Amplicon sequencing of the <em>Symbiodinium</em> ITS-2 locus was used to investigate differences in symbiont community composition among focal species. We did not observe universally higher levels of cooperation in vertically transmitting species. However, the reduction in cooperation at the onset of bleaching was marginally associated with symbiont community diversity. <p>Linked to the journal article published in Current Zoology (<a href="https://doi.org/10.1093/cz/zoad001">https://doi.org/10.1093/cz/zoad001</a>).</p> <p><em><strong>Abstract</strong></em></p> <p>Argentine ants (<em>Linepithema humile</em>) are one of the most damaging invasive alien species worldwide. Enhancing or disrupting cognitive abilities, such as learning, has the potential to improve management efforts, for example by increasing preference for a bait, or improving ants’ ability to learn its characteristics or location. Nectar-feeding insects are often the victims of psychoactive manipulation, with plants lacing their nectar with secondary metabolites such as alkaloids and non-protein amino acids which often alter learning, foraging, or recruitment. However, the effect of neuroactive chemicals has seldomly been explored in ants. Here, we test the effects of seven potential neuroactive chemicals - two alkaloids: caffeine and nicotine; two biogenic amines: dopamine and octopamine, and three non-protein amino acids: β-alanine, GABA and taurine - on the cognitive abilities of invasive <em>L. humile</em> using bifurcation mazes. Our results confirm that these ants are strong associative learners, requiring as little as one experience to develop an association. However, we show no short-term effect of any of the chemicals tested on spatial learning, and in addition no effect of caffeine on short-term olfactory learning. This lack of effect is surprising, given the extensive reports of the tested chemicals affecting learning and foraging in bees. This mismatch could be due to the heavy bias towards bees in the literature, a positive result publication bias, or differences in methodology.</p>

<p>This dataset contains a set of ground data and four flights captured on grape harvest over a vineyard affected by Botrytis cinerea. UAV flights took place on 16 September 2021, at 30 m height and using different angles (0, 30, 45 degrees). Pictures were taking using a Micasense RedEdge 3 sensor and were calibrated using the provided Micasense reflectance panel. The flight path was programmed to fly in autonomously, following manufacturer’s instructions (DJI). The dataset includes a shapefile with the GPS location of vine trunks, bunches affected by Botrytis and GCP points.</p>

In this study, we investigated the effect of three dietary interventions on small intestinal development in broilers and special emphasis on immunity. Morphometry and immunostaining showed no significant differences in any of the treatments, however, gene expression revealed significant differences in the LPHF and MCFA treatments. Pathway enrichment analysis showed a few main pathways involved in regulation of cellular processes, cell structural processes, and cell protection, as well as a putative link to inflammatory processes. Taken together, these findings suggest that dietary interventions can modulate gut health and functionality in chicken.</p>

Climate Record of Wintertime Wave-Affected Marginal Ice Zones in the Atlantic Arctic based on CryoSat-2,2010-2022
<p>This record contains data related to article "A 12-Year Climate Record of Wintertime Wave-Affected Marginal Ice Zones in the Atlantic Arctic based on CryoSat-2 ". Wave-affected marginal ice zone (MIZ) is an integral part of the sea ice cover, and a key region for air-ice-sea interactions in polar regions. We develop a novel retrieval algorithm for wave-affected MIZs based on the delay-Doppler radar altimeter onboard CryoSat-2 (CS2). CS2 waveform power and the waveform stack statistics are used to determine the MIZ locations. Based on the CS2 data since 2010, we generate a record of wave-affected MIZs in the Atlantic Arctic, spanning 12 winters between 2010 and 2022.</p> <p>The dataset contains two parts. First, the txt file contains retrieved MIZ locations obtained from each single track. Each column of data is represented by the corresponding CS2 product name, year, month, day, hour, regional flag (1:GS region,2:NS region,3:BS region), the start longitude and latitude of the marginal ice zone on each track, the end longitude and latitude of the marginal ice zone.</p> <p>Second,the gridded dataset is based on the along-track MIZ retrieval results, and it records the presence of the MIZ on the monthly basis. The latitude-longitude grid is adopted, with 2 degrees of longitude spacing and 1 degree of latitude spacing. Each file contains the following variables: the time, the MIZ flag, and the location flag. In this new version, we provide files in both NetCDF and GeoTIFF formats for users to download.</p>

Manipulating the hydroperiod affects plant and invertebrate communities in freshwater mesocosms, La Marque TX USA, 2019-2021
We used a mesocosm experiment with six flooding depths and seven drought durations, followed by seven months of recovery, to explore how freshwater wetlands typical of the Houston, Texas area would respond to different hydrological regimes that might occur if wetlands were drained in anticipation of a heavy rain that did not materialize, leading to a temporary period of little or no standing water. The experiment was conducted in 2019-2021. How quickly mesocosms dried out was a function of initial water depth, with mesocosms initially set with greater water depths (30 cm) taking on average 38 days to dry out. Individual plant species (14 were planted; 8 were common at the end of the recovery period) were affected drought length, flooding depth, or their interaction, with results varying among species. The composition of the plant community at the end of the drought period was strongly affected by drought length, and this effect persisted through seven months of recovery, with the 80- and 160-day drought treatments diverging most strongly from shorter drought treatments. Densities of mosquito larvae, snails and tadpoles were temporally variable, and affected more during the treatment period than after seven months of recovery. Our results indicate that managed wetlands in southeast Texas would be quite resilient to dry periods of up to 40 days in duration, especially if water was not completely drained at the beginning of the drought. In addition, some wetland species would persist in managed wetlands even if they experienced droughts of up to 160 days.
Greenhouse gas data of permafrost-affected reservoirs on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, 2016-2018
This dataset is a collation of 3-year direct measurement values of CO2, CH4 and N2O concentrations and fluxes of permafrost-affected reservoirs on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, along with information on location and chemical conditions of the study sites. Given the rarity and high value of this data set, it will be very valuable for the next update to global reservoir GHG flux estimates.
Predator- and competitor-induced plasticity: How changes in foraging morphology affect phenotypic trade-offs.
Studies of phenotypic plasticity frequently demonstrate functional trade-offs between alternative phenotypes by documenting environment-specific costs and benefits. However, the functional mechanisms underlying these trade-offs are often unknown. For example, predator-induced traits typically provide superior predator resistance but slower growth, while competitor-induced traits provide better growth but inferior predator resistance. While the mechanisms underlying predator resistance have been identified, the mechanisms underlying differential growth have remained elusive. To determine whether competitor and predator environments affect individual growth by induced changes in foraging morphology, we raised wood frog tadpoles (Rana sylvatica) under a factorial combination of competitors and predators and assessed changes in mouthparts that might affect growth. In general, competitors induced relatively larger oral discs, wider beaks, and longer tooth rows, while predators induced relatively smaller oral discs, narrower beaks, and shorter tooth rows. These effects were interactive; the largest competitor-induced responses occurred under high predator density and the largest predator-induced responses occurred under low competition. Further, one of the tooth rows that commonly appeared under low predation risk was frequently absent under high predation risk. These discoveries suggest that predator and competitor environments can have profound effects on prey foraging structures and that these effects set up growth trade-offs between phenotypes that favor the evolution of phenotypically plastic responses.
