Supplementary data for the paper: "Enhancing concrete durability in chloride-rich environments through manual application of healing agents"

Supplementary data for the paper: “Enhancing concrete durability in chloride-rich environments through manual application of healing agents”.

Open data concerning experimental work. The paperinvestigates the use of three potential healing agents: water-repellent agent (WRA), sodium silicate (SS), and polyurethane (PU). The agents are tested separately under two conditions: exposure to a 3.3% NaCl concentration at 20°C and exposure to cyclic freeze-thaw conditions. The agents are manually injected into the cracks and evaluated for their healing efficiency using the capillary absorption test and microscopy analysis. Additionally, their resistance to freeze-thaw cycles by monitoring mass loss and chloride bulk diffusion is measured using sprayed silver nitrate, titration, and EDX mapping.

Dataset: Interleukin (IL)-1 blocking agents for the treatment of COVID-19 A living systematic review

This dataset is used in the analyses reported in the review entitled "Interleukin (IL)-1 blocking agents for the treatment of COVID-19 A living systematic review"

IL-1 blockers are beneficial in inflammation-associated pathologies, such as rheumatoid arthritis (Mertens 2009) and possibly also in the subgroup of patients with severe sepsis where the inflammasome pathway is involved (Shakoory 2016). Similar benefits were reported in children with secondary macrophage activation syndrome, including cases triggered by viral infections (Mehta 2020b).

In this review we aimed to assess the effectiveness of IL-1 blocking agents compared to placebo, standard of care or no treatment on outcomes in patients with COVID-19.

This review is part of a larger project: the COVID-NMA project. We set-up a platform (https://covid-nma.com) where all our results are made available and updated bi-weekly.

Identification of infectious agents in early marine Chinook and Coho salmon associated with cohort survival

Recent decades have seen an increased appreciation for the role infectious diseases can play in mass mortality events across a diversity of marine taxa. At the same time many Pacific salmon populations have declined in abundance as a result of reduced marine survival. However, few studies have explicitly considered the potential role pathogens could play in these declines. Using a multi-year dataset spanning 59 pathogen taxa in Chinook and Coho salmon sampled along the British Columbia coast, we carried out an exploratory analysis to quantify evidence for associations between pathogen prevalence and cohort survival, and between pathogen load and body condition. While a variety of pathogens had moderate to strong negative correlations with body condition or survival for one host species in one season, we found that Tenacibaculum maritimum and Piscine orthoreovirus had consistently negative associations with body condition in both host species and seasons, and were negatively associated with survival for Chinook salmon collected in the fall and winter. Our analyses, which offer the most comprehensive examination of associations between pathogen prevalence and Pacific salmon survival to date, suggest that pathogens in Pacific salmon warrant further attention, especially those whose distribution and abundance may be influenced by anthropogenic stressors.

Saxagliptin: a doping agent? Inhibition of NPY1-36 cleavage improves cycling performance

Introduction - Neuropeptides Y (NPYs) contribute to the adreno-sympathetic stimulation, NPY1-36 potentiates catecholamines (CATs) effects whilst NPY3-36 inhibits CATs’ release.

Objectives - Investigate whether inhibiting dipeptidyl-peptidase-4 (DPP4), the main enzyme cleaving NPY1-36 into NPY3-36 increases NPY1-36 potentiating effects and reduces NPY3-36 inhibiting effects on CATs; thereby leading to performance improvement.

Methods - Seven participants performed a time-to-exhaustion cycling exercise at 95% of peak power output under either placebo (pcb) or saxagliptin (gpt), a DPP4 inhibitor, per os. Oxygen consumption (V̇O2), heart rate variability, NPY1-36, NPY3-36, catecholamines and lactate were measured at several time points before, during, and after exercise.

Results - DPP4 activity (12.7 ± 1.6 vs. 0.2 ± 0.3 U/L) and NPY3-36 (1.94 ± 0.88 vs. 0.73 ± 0.22 pM) decreased at rest in gpt whilst NPY1-36 increased (2.64 ± 2.22 vs. 4.59 ± 2.98 pM) and CATs was unchanged. Time-to-exhaustion was 32% higher in gpt, and pcb-to-gpt increase in time-to-exhaustion was correlated to NPY1-36 changes (R=0.78, p<0.05). Peak V̇O2 values were not different whilst there was a tendency for peak lactate to be higher and peak NPYs concentrations were higher in gpt. Exercise and post-exercise kinetics in all parameters were not different.

Discussion - DPP4 blockade increased NPY1-36 and decreased NPY3-36 concentrations which resulted in an increased potentiating effect on CATs and was likely responsible for performance improvement. Future studies need to determine the specific effects of NPYs and incretins on skeletal and myocardial muscles and establish whether DPP4 inhibitors could be a new class of doping agents.

Alternative Covid-19 mitigation measures in school classrooms: Analysis using an agent-based model of SARS-CoV-2 transmission

The SARS-CoV-2 epidemic continues to have major impacts on children's education, with schools required to implement infection control measures that have led to long periods of absence and classroom closures. We have developed an agent-based epidemiological model of SARS-CoV-2 transmission that allows us to quantify projected infection patterns within primary school classrooms, and related uncertainties; the basis of our approach is a contact model constructed using random networks, informed by structured expert judgment. The effectiveness of mitigation strategies is considered in terms of effectiveness at suppressing infection outbreaks and limiting pupil absence. Covid-19 infections in schools in the UK in Autumn 2020 are re-examined and the model used for forecasting infection levels in autumn 2021, as the more infectious Delta-variant was emerging and school transmission was thought likely to play a major role in an incipient new wave of the epidemic. Our results are in good agreement with available data and indicate that testing-based surveillance of infections in the classroom population with isolation of positive cases is a more effective mitigation measure than bubble quarantine both for reducing transmission in primary schools and for avoiding pupil absence, even accounting for the insensitivity of self-administered tests. Bubble quarantine entails large numbers of pupils being absent from school, with only a modest impact on classroom infection levels. However, maintaining a reduced contact rate within the classroom can have a major beneficial impact on managing Covid-19 in school settings.

BRAIN Journal - Lamport's algorithm - Figure 2 from paper "Optimization of Distributed Systems Using Multi-Agent Systems with Virtual Time"

Figure 2. Lamport’s algorithm

In order to synchronize logical clocks, Lamport [3] defined the relationship “happened before” (preceded) which implies that the expression 1 2 a → a means “ 1 a occurred before 2 a ”, and it means that all the processes coincide in the fact that 1 a took place first, and subsequently 2 a took place. This relation can be directly observed in two situations (figure 2): 1. If two events happen during the same process, the order of the happening is indicated by the common clock; 2. When two processes communicate through a message, the event that corresponds to sending the precise message always happens before the event of receiving it (i.e. the message). If two events, 1 a and 2 a , are produced in different processes that do not exchange messages (neither directly nor indirectly), then it is not certain if 1 2 a → a or 2 1 a → a . In this case it is said that these events are competitive, which means that it is not known which one happened first (and it is not a must-know thing either).

Figure 3. Using the ADX agent for obtaining definitions, synonyms and antonyms, for a given word, during MS Word editing-ADX – Agent for Morphologic Analysis of Lexical Entries in a Dictionary

In figure 3 we present a capture screen of using the ADX1 agent in editing the text in
Microsoft Word. It displays the definition of the current word, but it also generates the synonyms,
used in the application of some web searching rules, used by another intelligent agent, called ASR.
The ASR agent will automatically compose some search strings to use for a web search engine, like
Google, Yahoo, or other. For example, if the user will search the word zăpadă (snow) on Yahoo
search engine, then one can also generate a search for the word nea (synonym of zăpadă) by using
the following ASR rule:
# Yahoo search
IF
http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=^X^&fr=yfp-t-309&toggle=1&cop=mss&ei=UTF-8
THEN
http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=^Clasa(X)^&fr=yfp-t-309&toggle=1&cop=mss&ei=UTF-8

Figure 1. Linguistic analysis - ADX – Agent for Morphologic Analysis of Lexical Entries in a Dictionary

The first three analyses constitute an important phase, having as a result the obtaining of a
phrase that we cannot say is incorrect in that language, e. g. “Copilul a mâncat bătaie”. It is hard to
suppose, of course, that a child can have a “bataie” (“beating”) for his meal, but the problem is
solvable from a semantic point of view, because “a mânca bătaie” is a phrasal verb having the
meaning of “a fi bătut” (“to be beaten”). (The correct translation of the “Copilul a mâncat bătaie” is
“The child has been beaten.”).
