Glacier snow density measurements, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (1993-2023, ongoing)

As part of the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, a systematic sampling program has been undertaken to monitor glacial mass balance and meltwater flow. This data package includes snow density measurements determined at each stake with snow present on glaciers in Taylor Valley (Canada, Commonwealth, Howard, and Taylor) and Miers Valley (Adams), all of which are located in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica. Included here for each stake are the snow thickness and density for each layer and the average density for each pit. Most measurements began during the 93-94 field season. Adams measurements were established during the 14-15 field season. Measurements are ongoing for Adams, Commonwealth, and Howard glaciers. Monitoring the changes in these measurements over time provides a record of mass balance, and aids in determining the role of glaciers in the polar hydrologic cycle.

Soil invertebrate surveys from the Shackleton Glacier region of Antarctica during the 2017-2018 austral summer

During the 2017-2018 austral summer, a survey of soil invertebrate diversity and abundance was conducted throughout the Shackleton Glacier region of Antarctica to investigate whether habitat suitability, taxonomic diversity, and community composition follow predictable temporal patterns after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Soil samples were collected along elevation transects from twelve ice-free areas to capture maximum variation in soil properties, geochemistry, and surface exposure age. Integrated measurements of soil micro-invertebrate abundance and associated physicochemical properties from the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (1993–2022)

This data package compiles three decades (1993–2022) of soil micro-invertebrate abundance data and associated physicochemical measurements collected as part of the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long Term Ecological Research (MCM LTER) project in Antarctica. Variables include soil micro-invertebrate counts and species richness, along with associated soil physicochemical properties, including gravimetric moisture content, pH, electrical conductivity, soil organic carbon, ammonium, and nitrate. Data originate from both long-term core monitoring efforts and targeted opportunistic sampling campaigns across multiple valleys, including Arena, Beacon, Pearse, Taylor, Victoria, and Wright Valleys. Sampling locations span a range of geomorphic and ecological settings, providing broad spatial and temporal coverage of soil conditions across the Dry Valleys ecosystem. Data were curated to represent the most comprehensive and spatially diverse records available while minimizing sampling bias across years and study types. Underwater Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR) from in-situ Lake Primary Production Experiments in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica (1995-2024, ongoing)

As part of the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, PAR is measured at one depth during primary production experiments in Dry Valley Lakes. This data set quantifies instantaneous underwater PAR at 10-meter depths in Lakes Bonney and Hoare, and at 7-meter depth in Lake Fryxell (depths vary after 2008, check data file for actual depth). Ambient PAR was also measured at the air-ice interface from each of these lakes.

Bathymetric model of Lake Joyce, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica

An updated bathymetric model was developed for Lake Joyce, located in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica. The model integrates a published history of lake level rise from 1947 to 2014, historical lake depth soundings, digitized shoreline positions from both historical and modern aerial imagery, and subsurface bedrock topography from Taylor Glacier. The resulting dataset includes model-derived estimates of depth, map-projected area, lakebed surface area (factoring in slope), and water volume at 1-meter depth intervals.

Conductivity, temperature, and depth (CTD) vertical profiles from Lake Joyce, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, November 2014

Vertical profiles of conductivity, temperature, and depth (CTD) were collected from Lake Joyce, a perennially ice-covered lake in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica. Water column observations were made in November 2014 using a YSI 6600 multiparameter probe in the deepest region of the lake, as identified by Mackey et al. (2018). The water column was accessed by drilling a 10-inch wide hole through the perennial ice cover using a Jiffy drill. This data package includes CTD profiles, as well as measurements of salinity, total dissolved solids (TDS), dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, and pressure.

Soil Lake Inundation Moat Experiment (SLIME): Physical, chemical, and biological measurements from planktonic water columns, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (2018-2020)

The Soil Lake Inundation Moat Experiment (SLIME) was developed by the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long Term Ecological Research (MCM LTER) project to investigate the ecological function of lake moats in Antarctica. These moats form during the austral summer when the margins of permanently ice-covered, closed-basin lakes melt, creating open-water zones, or ‘moats,’ between the shoreline and the thick (3-5 m) perennial ice cover. To study these habitats, sampling transects were established on the north and south shores of Lake Fryxell and the East Lobe of Lake Bonney. This data package includes three seasons of physical, chemical, and biological measurements from the planktonic water columns of these lakes, collected from SLIME transects between January 2018 and January 2020. Parameters include water temperature, conductivity, ion and nutrient concentrations, chlorophyll-a concentrations, as well as fluorescence and photochemical efficiencies for major algal classes. NCBI accession numbers are also provided for the microbial sequence data associated with each sample.

Thermistor chain measurements from West Lake Bonney, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (2014-2019)

To capture year-round temperature variability in West Lake Bonney (WLB), Taylor Valley, Antarctica, we deployed two self-logging RBR Concerto T10 thermistor strings as part of the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long Term Ecological Research (MCM LTER) project. The thermistor strings were deployed beneath the permanent ice cover from December 2014 to November 2015 at two locations on the western side of the lake. In November 2015, both strings were relocated toward the centre of the glacier terminus to better capture potential subglacial inflows. Each thermistor string contained 10 sensors spaced at 1.44 m intervals. This data package includes 1-minute interval temperature measurements from all four deployment sites, along with daily averages compiled in a single file. Data from three thermistors were flagged as questionable based on comparisons with long-term MCM LTER CTD casts; these values remain in the dataset but are flagged to allow for adjustment during data processing.

Lake Fryxell under-ice conductivity, temperature, and depth (CTD) profiles, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, January 2025

To characterize the upper ~2 m of the water column beneath the ~3 m ice cover in Lake Fryxell, located in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, 27 CTD (conductivity, temperature, depth) profiles were collected at ~5 m horizontal spacing along a transect spanning the dive hole to the shoreline. Measurements were made using a YSI Castaway CTD mounted on a 1 m mast atop a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), profiling upward from ~2 m below the ice-water interface. Using an ROV rather than drilling a hole through the ice was intended to minimize artifacts associated with ice openings. Sampling late in the austral summer targeted conditions during maximum seasonal ice melt.

Lake Fryxell continuous benthic dissolved oxygen and temperature measurements, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, November 2023 to December 2024

To examine benthic dissolved oxygen (DO) dynamics in Lake Fryxell, located in the McMurdo Dry Valleys region of Antarctica, DO and temperature were continuously measured near the sediment–water interface at ~8.8 m depth from November 2023 to December 2024. A PME miniDOT® logger was deployed on the lake floor at 8.82 m depth, recording every 15 minutes from 9 November 2023 to 16 December 2024. An Onset HOBO® DO logger, buoyed slightly above the sediment at 8.80 m depth, recorded at the same 15-minute interval from 9 November 2023 to 6 August 2024. The shorter deployment period reflects the six-month lifespan of the HOBO optical sensor.

Lake Fryxell dissolved oxygen profiles, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica

Dissolved oxygen (DO) profiles were collected in Lake Fryxell, located in the McMurdo Dry Valleys region of Antarctica, on 18 November 2012 and 6 January 2025 to document decadal changes in water column oxygen structure. In 2012, a 50-µm Unisense oxygen microelectrode (90% response time less than 2 s) coupled to a Richard Brancker Concerto CTD recorded oxygen at 1 Hz and CTD parameters at 6 Hz during ice-penetrating profiling. In 2025, the same microelectrode and picoammeter were paired with an In-Situ Rugged TROLL 100 logger and sampled at 1 Hz. Electrodes were calibrated at ambient temperature using air-saturated and deoxygenated (sodium dithionite) water prior to deployment.

Lake Fryxell photosynthetically active radiation measurements, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica

Under-ice and water column photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) was measured in Lake Fryxell, located in the McMurdo Dry Valleys region of Antarctica, on 18 November 2012, 26 December 2022, and 17 January 2025 to track changes in irradiance transmission over time. In 2012 and 2022, a diver-deployed LI-COR LI-192R quantum sensor connected to a LI-1400 data logger recorded PAR (µmol photons m⁻² s⁻¹) beneath the ice along radial transects from the dive hole, while simultaneous measurements at the lake surface were used to calculate percent transmission. In 2025, a PME miniPAR logger (µmol photons cm⁻² s⁻¹) mounted on a Chasing M2 ProMax remotely operated vehicle (ROV) collected under-ice PAR, with concurrent surface measurements using a LI-192R sensor to calculate percent transmission.

This data package includes measurements from the East Lake Bonney “blue box” lake monitoring platform (ELBBB), established during the 1994-1995 austral summer in East Lake Bonney, Taylor Valley. Parameters include air and water temperature, surface and underwater photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), continuous stage (lake level), ice surface ablation, and, beginning in the 2022-2023 austral summer, dissolved oxygen (DO), reported as percent saturation due to the unavailability of continuous salinity measurements required for computing concentration. Data are provided at high frequency (typically 15-minute intervals), along with hourly and daily summaries. Users should note that summary statistics may be affected by periods of missing data.
