Ancient Archaeology site on Khabur River

Ancient ruin site on Khabur (Euphrates) River. Some have proposed this to be a possible location for the Tower of Babel as recorded in the Book of Genesis in the Bible. The remains of the main square structure is about 125 feet tall, and 650 feet long on each side, with the immediate surrounding tell at about 40 acres in area. GIS survey reveals a larger surrounding settlement city, now mostly under surrounding agricultural fields. This exact location matches cartography locations on a number of ancient maps for the Tower of Babel. Faunal remains data from Paleolithic to early Iron Age archaeological sites in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in China

<p>According to published archaeological sources, zooarchaeological data collection on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and its marginal and transitional areas is inadequate, and relevant datasets have not been published. For this reason, we collected and collated relevant information. Our database provides the geographical location, elevation, cultural type and faunal assemblage of each site on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and its periphery for which zooarchaeological data have been published from the Paleolithic to the Early Iron Age. The patterns of human faunal resource use, habitat patterns, and animal abundance and spatial distribution on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and its surrounding areas during the Prehistoric-Early Iron Age are represented in this dataset. The data provide a reference for further understanding&nbsp;prehistoric-early Iron Age human behavior, subsistence patterns and material and cultural exchanges between East and West on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and its environs.</p>

Sutton Hoo Ship Archaeology Site Suffolk England

Sutton Hoo ship burial and Royal Cemetary site with annotations of mounds 1–4, excavated by Basil Brown. The 2021 Netflix movie "The Dig" is based on the real life events surrounding one of the greatest archaeological finds in the world, and one of the most notable pre-Viking Saxon era from the 6th to 7th centuries. Starting in 1938, archaeolgists have continued working here and the surrounding areas until the modern age, with a number of new discoveries in the early 2000s. Treasures include armor, chain mail, helmets, gold, silver, garnet inlay, and much more. Many of these artifacts can be see in the British Museum in London, England. The fantastic tale of this discovery can be seen on the new Netflix film staring Carey Mulligan, Raplh Fiennes, Lily James, and Archie Barnes. Mount Nebo, Jordan - History & Archaeology Site

Mount Nebo in Jordan. This is the mountain spoken of in the Bible that Moses climbed to look over the Promised Land of Israel before he died and was buried in the mountain valley by God in Deuteronomy 34. 2nd Maccabees 2 also tell that this mountain is the hidden resting place of the Ark of the Covenant and the Tabernacle, placed there and sealed by the prophet Jeremiah just prior to the fall of Jerusalem by the Babylonians in 586 BC. The moutain remains one of archaeological interest. On top of the mountain are the remains of a Byzantine church and monastery which were discovered in 1933. The Moses memorial may be seen on top of the hill today, which overlooks the Jordan River valley and the traditional site of the baptism of Jesus at Bethany Beyond the Jordan. -Nate Loper Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab

Gatlin Archaeological Site

The Gatlin Site is an archaeological site in Gila Bend, Arizona. The site preserves one of the few documented Hohokam platform mounds. Associated with the mound are pit houses, ball courts, middens, and prehistoric canals. Between AD 800 and 1200 it was an important Hohokam settlement at the great bend of the Gila River. The Hohokam people were the first farmers in southern Arizona, where the permanent Salt and Gila Rivers flowing through the hot Sonoran Desert made the irrigation strategy possible. The site is the largest in the area and was home to over 500 people. Its importance is indicated by the presence of two ceremonial ball courts and one of the earliest platform mounds known. The mound is notable as being one of only few excavated and documented Sedentary Period platform mounds still relatively intact. Data from: Mapping Tasmania's cultural landscapes: using habitat suitability modelling of archaeological sites as a landscape history tool

Aim: Understanding past distributions of people across the landscape is key to understanding how people used, affected and related to the natural environment. Here we use habitat suitability modelling to represent the landscape distribution of Tasmanian Aboriginal archaeological sites and assess the implications for patterns of past human activity. Location: Tasmania, Australia Methods: We developed a RandomForest 'habitat suitability' model of site records in the Tasmanian Aboriginal Heritage Register. We applied a best-effort bias correction, considered 31 predictor variables relating to climate, topography and resource proximity, and used a variable selection procedure to optimise the final model. Model uncertainty was assessed via bootstrapping and we ran an analogous MAXENT model as a cross-validation exercise. Results: The results from the RandomForest and MAXENT models are highly congruent. The strongest environmental predictors of site occurrence include distance to coast, elevation, soil clay content, topographic roughness and distance to inland water. The highest habitat suitability scores are distributed across a wide range of environments in central, northern and eastern Tasmania, including coastal areas, inland water body margins, and forests and savannas in the drier parts of Tasmania. With the exception of coastal areas much of western Tasmania has low habitat suitability scores, consistent with theories of low-density Holocene Tasmanian Aboriginal settlement in this region. Main conclusions: Our modelling suggests Tasmanian Aboriginal people occupied a heterogeneity of habitats but targeted coastal areas around the whole island, and drier, less steep, and/or open forest and savanna environments in the central lowlands. The western interior was identified as being rarely used by Aboriginal people in the Holocene, with the exception of isolated pockets of habitat; yet whether this is a true reflection of Aboriginal resource use demands increased archaeological surveys, particularly in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.
