The EcoTrends project was established in 2004 by Dr. Debra Peters (Jornada Basin LTER, USDA-ARS Jornada Experimental Range) and Dr. Ariel Lugo (Luquillo LTER, USDA-FS Luquillo Experimental Forest) to support the collection and analysis of long-term ecological datasets. The project is a large synthesis effort focused on improving the accessibility and use of long-term data. At present, there are ~50 state and federally funded research sites that are participating and contributing to the EcoTrends project, including all 26 Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites and sites funded by the USDA Agriculture Research Service (ARS), USDA Forest Service, US Department of Energy, US Geological Survey (USGS) and numerous universities. Data from the EcoTrends project are available through an exploratory web portal (http://www.ecotrends.info). This web portal enables the continuation of data compilation and accessibility by users through an interactive web application. Ongoing data compilation is updated through both manual and automatic processing as part of the LTER Provenance Aware Synthesis Tracking Architecture (PASTA). The web portal is a collaboration between the Jornada LTER and the LTER Network Office. The following dataset from Shortgrass Steppe (SGS) contains animal abundance of Athene cunicularia measurements in numberPerSightingEffort units and were aggregated to a yearly timescale.

This data set contains measurements of air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, wind direction, total rainfall, and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) from an open site located at Whitehall Forest, Athens, GA. Air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and PAR density are measured every 60 seconds with average, minimum and maximum values saved to the output data table every hour. Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia) nest phenology influenced by drought on nonbreeding grounds

<p>Migratory birds are demonstrating changes in phenology linked to climate change. Understanding these changes requires connecting events that occur over the multiple regions occupied during their annual cycle.  The Burrowing Owl (<i>Athene cunicularia</i>) is a species of concern in North America, with pronounced declines in regions of the Great Plains.  Using a dataset that spanned ten breeding sites from South Dakota to northern Mexico in various years during 1989-2017, we observed both advances and delays in nesting along with increasing variation in nest initiation dates.  We examined the effects of a large-scale climate system (El Niño Southern Oscillation), drought, and local weather patterns throughout the annual cycle as potential predictors of early and late nesting.  Moisture conditions during the winter and spring migratory period had the greatest influence on nest phenology.  Years with more intense drought on winter and migratory grounds increased the probability of nests initiating late relative to early.  Correspondingly, wet conditions were associated with an increased probability of early nest initiation.  Drought likely has cascading ecological effects that negatively influence food abundance for Burrowing Owls, resulting in delays in the ability of individuals to meet energetic demands required for migration.  How climate change will impact Burrowing Owl phenology is important considering a projected increase in magnitude and frequency of drought and declining owl population trends. </p>

CRONUS Functional Prototype 1 - Athens, Greece

<p>Functional Prototype 1 (FP1): Capture and Utilisation of CO2 from a biofuels biorefinery that include biomass combustion, ethanolic fermentation and anaerobic digestion via autotrophic algae growth. This prototype aims to valorise the carbon dioxide produced from three separate streams of an integrated biorefinery. This biorefinery constructed in the framework of Life CircforBio, is situated in NTUA&rsquo;s Lavrion Culture and Technological Park (LCTP), Attica, Greece and treats several types of biowaste such as source separated food waste, brewery spent grains, spent coffee grounds, potato processing industry waste, orange juice industry waste etc. It has a daily capacity of 1tn wet feedstock. The main products are oil (raw material for biodiesel), bioethanol, biogas and digestate. Geographic variation in dispersal of western burrowing owl (Athene cunicularia hypugaea) populations

<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Dispersal is one of the key elements of species' metapopulation dynamics<i> </i>and, hence, influences global conservation status. Furthermore, determining the geographic variation in magnitude and direction of dispersal throughout a species' distribution may expand our understanding of the causes of population declines in species of conservation concern. For instance, western burrowing owl (<i>Athene cunicularia hypugaea</i>) populations have declined at the northern and eastern edge of their breeding distribution during the 20<sup>th</sup> century. In the same period, large areas of thornscrub that did not support breeding owls were converted to irrigated agriculture in the southern edge of the subspecies' breeding distribution in northwestern Mexico. These farmlands now support some of the highest breeding densities of owls. We tested the hypothesis that owls that colonized this recently created habitat originated from declining migratory populations from the northern portion of the subspecies' range. We used stable isotopes <sup>2</sup>H, <sup>13</sup>C, and <sup>15</sup>N in owl feathers to infer breeding dispersal patterns throughout the subspecies' breeding range. Populations near the northern edge of the subspecies' breeding range had immigrants that dispersed over larger distances than immigrants at low and mid latitude populations. However, agricultural populations in northwestern Mexico disrupted this latitudinal pattern, attracting owls from more distant locations. We also found immigrants originated from further distances in declining populations than increasing populations. Stable isotopes provided no evidence of contemporaneous breeding dispersal from Canadian populations to northwestern Mexico but suggest that agricultural areas in the southern edge of the subspecies' distribution have altered the continental dispersal pattern.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

Sewer mining modular unit at the Athens Urban Tree Nursery

<p>The Athens Urban Tree Nursery is part of the Goudi Park, an area in the process of redevelopment and regeneration to become the key metropolitan park of the capital. The area, which lies in the heart of Athens, is a mixed-use area, comprising of urban green and urban agriculture spaces as well as administration and residential uses. The regeneration is an effort to boost both the local economy and improve quality of life for the 4.000.000 citizens of the Attica Region.</p> <p>The nursery comprises 4 ha of vegetation, supplys all urban parks and green spaces of Athens with plant material and uses potable water from Athens&rsquo;s Water Supply and Sewerage Company (EYDAP) for its irrigation. The city is seeking alternative water sources leveraging circular economy solutions to achieve environmental, social and financial benefits for the city.</p> <p>The installation of a sewer mining modular unit for urban green irrigation at the point of demand would be of direct benefit for the sustainability of the new metropolitan park. Additionally, compost-based eco-engineered growing media products will be reused as an onsite fertilizer, as part of a portfolio of autonomous, decentralized water, energy and materials circular solutions for cities in water scarce area. Finally, thermal energy recovery schemes will be investigated to minimize the pilot&rsquo;s environmental footprint.</p>
