<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>A HYDRINS Inertial Navigation System (INS) was installed on the R/V Akademik Tryoshnikov during the austral summer of 2016/2017 as it circumnavigated Antarctica as part of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE).</p> <p>This dataset is uncorrected and as-was recorded and covers the period from November 2016 – April 2017. Data files are provided in text format which can be used in many software packages. <p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>A Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) recorded the route undertaken by the R/V Akademik Tryoshnikov during a circumnavigation of the Antarctic as part of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) in the austral summer of 2016/2017.</p> <p>The data provided in this dataset are raw NMEA strings containing date, time, latitude and longitude, with other NMEA variables allowing the accuracy of the location to be ascertained with one-second resolution. Quality-checked, one-minute resolution cruise track of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) undertaken during the austral summer of 2016/2017.
<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>The Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE), undertaken in the austral summer of 2016/2017 recorded the cruise track using two independent geo-location instruments: one using GLobal NAvigation Satellite Systems (GLONASS; hereafter referred to as GLONASS) and another primarily using the Global Positioning System (GPS; hereafter referred to as the Trimble GPS). Daily log files were recorded in real-time from both instruments during the expedition and added to MySQL database tables. Following the expedition, quality-checking work has been undertaken to provide a one-second resolution set of positions for the cruise track. Here we present the final quality-checked dataset aggregated to a resolution of one minute. Soil invertebrate surveys from the Shackleton Glacier region of Antarctica during the 2017-2018 austral summer
During the 2017-2018 austral summer, a survey of soil invertebrate diversity and abundance was conducted throughout the Shackleton Glacier region of Antarctica to investigate whether habitat suitability, taxonomic diversity, and community composition follow predictable temporal patterns after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Soil samples were collected along elevation transects from twelve ice-free areas to capture maximum variation in soil properties, geochemistry, and surface exposure age. This data package includes invertebrate abundances (nematodes, tardigrades, rotifers) for each sample categorized by species, sex, and maturity (juvenile, adult).
Ash-free dry mass data from drift net experiments in glacial-melt streams of Fryxell Basin, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, during the 2022-2023 austral summer
During the 2022-2023 austral summer, 12 drift net experiments were conducted in four glacial-melt streams—Aiken Creek, Green Creek, Lost Seal Stream, and Von Guerard Stream—to quantify particulate organic matter (POM) flux from streams to downstream lakes. Streams are located in Fryxell Basin, within Taylor Valley in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica. Drift nets were deployed near the mouth of each stream and sampled every 4 to 12 hours to collect POM. Collected as part of the McMurdo Dry Valleys LTER project, these data provide insight into the temporal variability of organic material transport in polar desert ecosystems.
Raw meteorological dataset from the Southern Ocean collected on board the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) during the austral summer of 2016/2017.
<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>A Vaisala MAWS240 meteorological station was installed on the R/V Akademik Tryoshnikov during a circumnavigation of Antarctica in the austral summer season of 2016/2017. This dataset contains the raw text files of meteorology data collected in the Southern Ocean and Atlantic Ocean as part of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE). Data coverage is from 17th November 2016 until 11th April 2016.</p> <p>Data files have undergone no processing or quality-checking and are as-recorded, directly from the instrumentation.</p> <p>Wind speed and direction parameters were recorded with a resolution of three seconds. Air temperature, relative humidity, dew point, solar radiation, ultraviolet radiation, cloud level and sky cover were recorded with a resolution of 30 seconds.</p> <p>Time of the measurement should be used with the TIMEDIFF to convert it to UTC. Latitude and longitude recorded are not corrected. Five-minute average cruise track and ship velocity of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) undertaken during the austral summer of 2016/2017.
<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>The ship's cruise track, velocity, course over ground and heading at one-minute resolution for all five legs of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) are derived from a combination of:<br> - the latitude/longitude record of the Quality-checked, one-second cruise track for 21.12.2016 to 11.04.2017.<br> - the latitude/longitude record of the Uncorrected inertial navigation dataset (one-second resolution) for 27.11.2016 to 21.12.2016<br> - the latitude/longitude record of the raw meteorological data (30-second resolution) from 17.11.2016 to 27.11.2016<br> - where no latitude/longitude record at one-second resolution is available and the ship's velocity was above 2 meters per second, the three-second resolution record of the true and relative wind speed and direction, as well as the heading are used to re-calculate the ship's velocity under the assumption that the course of the ship equalled the heading.</p> <p>Basic filtering are applied to remove erroneous observations before the data are averaged to a one-minute resolution (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.3752667).<br> The one-minute time series are averaged to five-minute resolution, whereby the vector averaging is used for the platform velocity and orientation.<br> For the latitude and longitude coordinates a simple average is calcualted, i.e., ignoring the curvature of the Earth.<br> Short stretches of missing coordinates are filled with linear interpolation between neighbouring observations.</p> <p><strong>Dataset contents</strong></p> <ul> <li>cruise-track-5min-legs0-4.csv, data file, comma-separated values</li> <li>data_file_header, metadata, text format</li> <li>README.txt, metadata, text format</li> <li>ace-cruise-track-5min-legs0-4-change-log.txt, metadata, text format</li> </ul> <p><strong>Change log</strong></p> <p><strong>v1.1</strong> - Added additional data coverage from 2016-11-17 - 2016-11-22 inclusive. Water temperature measurements collected during austral summer 2017/2018 on lakes located in the Schirmacher oasis, East Antarctica.
<p>Lakes’ water temperature are measured on lakes of three types (epiglacial, epishelf and land-locked) located in the Schirmacher oasis, East Antarctica. The temporal hydrological network is equipped by 11 temperature sensors, which are measured both surface and bottom water temperature of lakes. The surface temperature is recorded with the temperature loggers iButton DS1922L/DS1922T (https://www.maximintegrated.com/en/datasheet/index.mvp/id/4088) on 8 lakes. The sensors are deployed within a distance of 1–3 m from a lake’s coast, on a depth of 0.02 m. The lake’s surface temperature is also measured on two lakes with the temperature sensors by HOBO Water Level U20L (https://www.onsetcomp.com/products/data-loggers/u20l-01), which are deployed on the depth of 0.2 m. One HOBO sensor is installed to be attached to a lake’s ground on a depth approximately 0.5 m. The measurements cover the period of over 12–36 days depending on a lake. The data set includes the field campaign’s report of 63 RAE in the Schirmacher oasis (a text, in Russian) as a pdf-file, the metadata for the measurements (name, elevation, lon/lat of the temperature sensors deployed; name of the lakes; period with measurements; comments) as a shp-file, and the tables with water temperature measured for each lakes (as files of CSV format). Also, the deployment of the temperature sensor on the Lake Pomornik is presented in the jpg-file.</p> <p> </p>
3D wind speed and CO2/H20 concentration measurements collected during austral summer 2017/2018 over an ice free surface of a shallow lake located in the Schirmacher oasis, East Antarctica.
<p>The data set includes measurements collected by the integrated CO2 and H2O open-path gas analyzer and 3-D sonic anemometer (Irgason by Campbell Scientific with serial number 1243, https://www.campbellsci.com/irgason). The instrument was operated from 01.01.2018 to 07.02.2018. It was deployed on the north-west shore of the Lake Zub/Priyadarshini (S70° 45′ 41.5″, E011° 44′ 16.6″) on the distance of 10 m from the coast. The instrument was placed on the aluminum tripod on the height of 2 m, and directed to south-eastwards (137 SE). Six metal guidelines were linked to anchors, and the boom was fixed on the tripod. Two rechargeable batteries (12V/33Ah) were used in additional to two solar panels to power supply of the instrument (irgason_deployment.jpg). The format of the output files is given in Irgason_output.pdf. The raw data are packed into the *.dat files (one per day) and then compressed (bz2). The calibration of the Irgason was done 21.08.2017 in the lab of the Finnish Meteorological Institute with standard zero-and-span procedure, and then the instrument is adjusted accordingly.</p>
Aerosol particles observed onboard the research vessel Mirai over the Southern Ocean in the austral summer of 2017
<p>We have compiled a dataset of field observations to measure aerosol particle size distributions and to collect the aerosols for the following laboratory analyses to quantify the chemical composition and ice nucleating properties of aerosols over the Southern Ocean in the austral summer of 2017 as a part of the research cruise of Japanese research vessel (R/V) Mirai (Cruise number of MR16-09 leg3). The particle size distributions (PSDs) of the submicron aerosols (14–737 nm in the electrical mobility diameter) were measured using a scanning mobility particle sizer, SMPS, which is composed of a differential mobility analyzer, DMA (model 3081, TSI Inc., Minnesota, USA) and a condensation particle counter, CPC (model 3010, TSI Inc.). Since a custom-made inlet system was installed in front of the SMPS, the PSDs of total and non-volatile aerosols upon heating at the 300°C were alternatively measured every 5 min. The PSDs of the coarse fluorescent and non-fluorescent particles (700–3000 nm in the optical diameter) were measured using a waveband integrated bioaerosol sensor, WIBS (type 4A, Droplet Measurement Technologies Ltd., Colorado, USA). Hourly averaged PSDs for the diameter range of 14–3000 nm were analyzed in the associated paper in order to relate the wave breaking state derived from the hourly observations of significant wave height on the R/V. Chemical compositions were derived from the collected samples with the following techniques at the laboratory, ion chromatography for water soluble ions (chloride, nitrate, sulfate, ammonium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium ions), thermal optical transmittance technique for carbonaceous aerosols (organic and elemental carbons), and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry for aluminum (Al). Ice nucleating properties of the aerosol particles were analyzed using a droplet freezing method (Cryogenic Refrigerator Applied to Freezing Test, CRAFT) at National Institute of Polar Research (Tobo, 2016 <a href="https://doi.org/10.1038/srep32930">https://doi.org/10.1038/srep32930</a>). All the data indicating the concentrations were reported at standard temperature and pressure (0°C and 1 atm).</p> <p>We prepared five files (comma-separated values) in total, which are hourly aerosol concentrations measured using the SMPS and WIBS, Particle size distributions measured using the SMPS, Particle size distributions measured using the WIBS, Aerosol chemical compositions, and Ice nucleating particle concentrations during the research cruise of MR16-09 leg3. Each file includes the header part to describe the aerosol data including the date and time in UTC, and the positions of the R/V.</p> <p>The associated paper discusses some aspects of data treatment and questions regarding to the methods employed in this study.</p>
