Calponin-Homology Domain mediated bending of membrane associated actin filaments

This dataset contains data from experiments described in 'Palani S, Ghosh S, Ivorra-Molla E, Clarke S, Suchenko A, Balasubramanian MK, Köster DV. 2021. Calponin-homology domain mediated bending of membrane associated actin filaments. Elife 10. doi:10.7554/eLife.61078'. This dataset consists of fluorescence microscopy images obtained by total internal reflection fluorescence (TIRF) microscopy. Using an in vitro approach, we studied the effect of the IQGAP protein fragment Rng2(1-189) on the geometry of actin filaments when tethered to supported lipid bilayers all reconstituted from purified proteins. The main findings are that Rng2(1-189) bends actin filaments into tight rings when tethered to supported lipid bilayers.

Inorganic nutrient dynamics in the lower Indian Bend Wash watershed: period 2002-2003

This survey set was designed to evaluate the degree to which the various stream and lake segments in the lower portion of Indian Bend Wash acted as sources or sinks for dissolved inorganic nutrients ( SRP, NO3, and NH4 . Complete surveys of the study reach were conducted on 23 dates in 2002 and 19 dates in 2003. Surveys were approximately monthly during winter and more frequent during summer, with survey frequency increasing directly after floods. In addition to complete surveys, a subset of points was also sampled during 6 flood events. Sample locations included inlets and outlets of all lakes between the outlet of L-1 and the outlet of L-8, plus additional inlet and outlet sites for other hydrologic inputs and off-channel components of the system.

Bending moments in swimming fish

Most fish swim with body undulations that result from fluid-structure interactions between the fish's internal tissues and the surrounding water. Gaining insight into these complex fluid structure interactions is essential to understand how fish swim. To this end, we developed a dedicated experimental-numerical inverse dynamics approach to calculate the lateral bending moment distributions for a large-amplitude undulatory swimmer that moves freely in 3D space. We combined automated motion tracking from multiple synchronised high-speed video sequences, computation of fluid-dynamic stresses on the swimmer's body from computational fluid dynamics, and bending-moment calculations using these stresses as input for a novel beam model of the body. The bending moment, which represent the system's net actuation, varies over time and along the fish's central axis due to muscle actions, passive tissues, inertia, and fluid dynamics. Our 3D analysis of 113 swimming events of zebrafish larvae ranging in age from 3 to 12 days after fertilisation shows that these bending moment patterns are not only relatively simple but also strikingly similar throughout early development, and from fast starts to periodic swimming. This suggests that fish larvae may produce and adjust swimming movements relatively simply, yet effectively, while restructuring their neuromuscular control system throughout their rapid development.

Supplementary data for "Reducing the risk of rostral bending failure"

Supplementary data for "Reducing the risk of rostral bending failure" Author summary: Weevils are among the most diverse and evolutionarily successful animal lineages on Earth. Their success is driven in part by a structure called the rostrum, which gives weevil heads a characteristic "snout-like" appearance. Nut weevils in the genus Curculio use the rostrum to drill holes into developing fruits and nuts, into which they deposit their eggs. During oviposition this exceedingly slender structure is bent into a straightened configuration - in some species up to 90° - but does not suffer any damage during this process. Using finite element models of the rostra of three morphologically distinct species, we show that the Curculio rostrum is only able to withstand repeated, extreme bending because of modifications to the composite structure of the cuticle in the rostral apex. This is the first time that the laminate profile, orthotropic behavior, and functional gradation of the cuticle have been incorporated into a three-dimensional finite element model of an insect cuticular structure. Our models highlight the significance of biomechanical constraint - i.e., avoidance of catastrophic structural failure - on the evolution of insect morphology. Finite element models of Curculio rostra. FE model databases, job files, and output databases containing imported part geometries, meshes, and fully-specified material models of the head and rostrum for each species; full dataset available here. File names indicate species, mesh size (s02 is the finest model scale), load condition (either in mg for validation models or bending for prescribed displacement models), and which modifications have been removed from the layup (i.e., layer thicknesses or orientation angles - or both - are set equal to those of the head capsule). Files for a single species should all be placed into a single folder after unzipping. The abaqus plugins folder (with material definitions) and the .cae/.jnl files (.cae is used to open all the models in Abaqus CAE) should be in the same folder with the rest of the model files. The sulcatulus folder shows this organization, the models for other species had to be separated due to file size constraints. X-ray tomography data. JPEG image stack and 3D reconstruction from µ-CT scan of female Curculio caryae; full dataset available here.

Data from: How do baleen whales stow their filter? A comparative biomechanical analysis of baleen bending

Bowhead and right whale (balaenid) baleen filtering plates, longer in vertical dimension (3-4+ m) than the closed mouth, presumably bend during gape closure. This has not been observed in live whales, even with scrutiny of videorecorded feeding sequences. To determine what happens to baleen as gape closes, we conducted an integrative, multifactorial study including materials testing, functional (flow tank and kinematic) testing, and histological examination. We measured baleen bending properties along the dorsoventral length of plates and anteroposterior location within a rack of plates via mechanical (axial bending, composite flexure, compression, and tension) tests of hydrated and air-dried tissue samples from balaenid and other whale baleen. Balaenid baleen is remarkably strong yet pliable, with ductile fringes and low stiffness and high elasticity when wet; it likely bends in the closed mouth when not used for filtration. Calculation of flexural modulus from stress/strain experiments shows baleen is slightly more flexible where it emerges from the gums and at its ventral terminus, but kinematic analysis indicates plates bend evenly along their whole length. Fin and humpback whale baleen has similar material properties but less flexibility, with no dorsoventral variation. Internal horn tubes have greater external and hollow luminal diameter but lower density in lateral relative to medial baleen of bowhead and fin whales, suggesting greater capacity for lateral bending. Baleen bending has major consequences not only for feeding morphology and energetics but also conservation given that entanglement in fishing gear is a leading cause of whale mortality.

Stiffness of Fluid and Gel Phase Lipid Nanovesicles: Weighting the Contributions of Membrane Bending Modulus and Luminal Pressurization

In the manuscript, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) is employed for characterizing the mechanical response of nanosized lipid vesicles presenting membranes with different physical state. Results suggest that the mechanical response of lipid vesicles can be ascribed to two main contributions, i) the luminal pressure and ii) the intrinsic membrane rigidity. By developing a spring-based model, authors were able to rationalize the apparent disagrement between the two most commonly employed models for describing vesicle mechanics.

Security Fences: Stainless Steel Mesh is Very Strong and Will Not Bend.

Stainless steel mesh is the greatest material for security fences since it is long-lasting and dependable. While more traditional options such as chain-link or wrought iron receive more attention, stainless steel mesh exemplifies how far modern engineering has progressed and how much individuals want to keep their houses secure.

Keeping People Safe with Strength: Security Fences

Security fences are today's unsung heroes, quietly guarding homes, businesses, and key structures. Among the several materials used to construct them, stainless steel mesh is the strongest and most lasting.

Stainless steel mesh may not appear impressive at first glance, but its composition tells a different story. This mesh is made of fine stainless steel wire that has been expertly woven into a grid-like shape, making it highly robust while remaining elegant and unobtrusive.

Stainless steel mesh is quite valuable since it may be utilized in a variety of applications. Whether employed in factories, government buildings, or private places, it provides a great combination of protection and aesthetic appeal. Its open structure allows you to keep an eye on things and let air flow through, but it also prevents people from entering.

Unlike conventional fence materials, which rust and degrade over time, stainless steel mesh resists the elements. Because it does not rust naturally, it will last a long time and cost you less in the long run. Furthermore, advances in manufacturing techniques have improved its ability to withstand harsh weather conditions ranging from extremely hot to extremely cold.

Forging the Backbone: Companies That Make Steel Wire

Steel wire manufacturers are responsible for the production of stainless steel mesh. Their expertise and inventiveness influence the field of security fencing. These industry pioneers harness steel's raw force to create a flexible material capable of withstanding high stress and pressure.

Steel wire manufacturers utilize cutting-edge tools and procedures to produce stainless steel wire that is stronger and more consistent than any other wire available on the market. Each strand is thoroughly tested to ensure that it satisfies strict quality standards. This ensures that the final product is trustworthy.

It's not just about strength, though. Steel wire manufacturers understand the importance of being able to adapt their goods to satisfy their customers' diverse needs. They work hard to develop solutions that meet specific security requirements, whether that means modifying the wire thickness or weave pattern.

Furthermore, everything they do is based on environmental sustainability. Steel wire manufacturers limit their environmental effect without losing quality or performance by optimizing resource utilization and implementing eco-friendly methods. This commitment to sustainability benefits the environment while also making stainless steel mesh appear to be a more responsible option for security fences.

Use Concrete Reinforcing Mesh to Strengthen Foundations

Concrete reinforced mesh is an essential component of construction because it strengthens structures against natural pressures. It is composed of meticulously placed stainless steel wires in a grid pattern. This offers modern infrastructure the necessary strength to withstand the strains of modern living.

Reinforcing mesh for concrete is the foundation of concrete structures. It distributes loads evenly and reduces the possibility of cracks and structural collapse. Its high tensile strength and rust resistance ensure that buildings, bridges, and roads last a long period while remaining structurally sound.

However, concrete reinforcing mesh has a purpose other than strengthening; it also speeds up and reduces the cost of construction. It reduces the need for excessive concrete and accelerates the construction process, decreasing costs and project timeframes without sacrificing quality.

Furthermore, concrete reinforcing mesh is an excellent example of how effectively stainless steel and concrete function together. Steel is strong, but concrete is flexible, therefore they function well together. Together, they can create long-lasting structures.
