To achieve this, a viable pathway to reduce the iridium loading in proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) is explored. Herein, we present a scalable synthesis method based on a photodeposition process for a&nbsp;TiO<sub>2</sub>@IrO<sub>x</sub> core-shell catalyst with a reduced iridium content as low as 40 wt%. Using this synthesis route, we obtain titania support particles homogeneously coated with a thin iridium oxide shell of only 2.1 &plusmn; 0.4 nm. The catalyst exhibits not only high ex situ activity, but also decent stability compared to commercially available catalysts. Furthermore, the unique core-shell structure provides a threefold increased electrical powder conductivity compared to structures without the shell. In addition, the low iridium content facilitates the fabrication of sufficiently thick catalyst layers at decreased iridium loadings mitigating the impact of crack formation in the catalyst layer during PEMWE operation. We demonstrate that the novel TiO<sub>2</sub>@IrO<sub>x</sub> core-shell catalyst clearly outperforms the commercial reference in single-cell tests with an iridium loading below 0.3&nbsp;mg<sub>Ir</sub>&nbsp;cm<sup>‑2&nbsp;</sup>exhibiting a superior iridium-specific power density of 17.9 kW g<sub>Ir</sub><sup>-1&nbsp;</sup>compared to 10.4 kW g<sub>Ir</sub><sup>-1&nbsp;</sup>for the commercial reference.</p>

Data from: Human atlastin-3 is a constitutive ER fusion catalyst (lipid mixing data)

<p>Homotypic membrane fusion catalyzed by the atlastin (ATL) GTPase sustains the branched endoplasmic reticulum (ER) network in metazoans. Our recent discovery that two of three human ATL paralogs (ATL1/2) are C-terminally autoinhibited implied that relief of autoinhibition would be integral to the ATL fusion mechanism. An alternative hypothesis is that the third paralog ATL3 promotes constitutive ER fusion with relief of ATL1/2 autoinhibition used conditionally. However, published studies suggest ATL3 is a weak fusogen at best. Contrary to expectations, we demonstrate here that purified human ATL3 catalyzes efficient membrane fusion in vitro and is sufficient to sustain the ER network in triple knockout cells. Strikingly, ATL3 lacks any detectable C-terminal autoinhibition, like the invertebrate <em>Drosophila</em> ATL orthologue. Phylogenetic analysis of ATL C-termini indicates that C-terminal autoinhibition is a recent evolutionary innovation. We suggest that ATL3 is a constitutive ER fusion catalyst and that ATL1/2 autoinhibition likely evolved in vertebrates as a means of upregulating ER fusion activity on demand.</p>

Methoxycyclization of 1,5-Enynes by Coinage Metal Catalysts: Is Gold Always Superior?

<p>Au(I) catalysts promote the intramolecular cycloisomerization of 1,<em>n</em>-enynes, as well as facilitate reactions with alcohols, characteristics that have led to their wide-spread in the synthesis of complex natural products. Literature reports of Cu and Ag species catalyzing the same or similar reactions are much less common. Here, we utilize molecular volcano plots to assess the activity of 45 coinage metal phosphine/phosphite catalysts possessing a variety of stereoelectronic properties for the methoxycyclization reaction of a prototypical 1,5-enyne. Our analysis reveals that the intrinsic properties of gold allow it to be coupled with a wide range of ligands, all of which exhibit high catalytic activity. On the other hand, the coupling of silver and copper with more traditional phosphines, such as triphenylphosphine, leads to catalysts with diminished catalytic ability. The activity of Ag and Cu species, however, can be enhanced by appending ligands with strong &pi;-accepting character, which shifts these species closer to the volcano peak.</p>

Here, there utility is demonstrated by examining competing carboamination/cyclopropanation reactions catalyzed by Group 9 catalysts featuring cyclopentadienyl ligands, which reveals an interesting energetic interplay involving the role of the solvent and of the catalyst.</p>
