Data for: Understanding consumers to inform market interventions for Singapore's shark fin trade
<ol> <li>Sharks, rays and their cartilaginous relatives (Class Chondricthyes, herein 'sharks') are amongst the world's most threatened species groups, primarily due to overfishing, which in turn is driven by complex market forces including demand for fins. Understanding the high-value shark fin market is a global priority for conserving shark and rays, yet the preferences of shark fin consumers are not well understood. This gap hinders the design of evidence-based consumer-focused conservation interventions. </li> <li>Using an online discrete choice experiment, we explored preferences for price, quality, size, menu types (as a proxy for exclusivity) and source of fins (with varying degrees of sustainability) among 300 shark fin consumers in Singapore: a global entrepot for shark fin trade. </li> <li>Overall, consumers preferred lower-priuced fins sourced from responsible fisheries or produced using novel lab-cultured techniques. We also identified four consumer segments, each with distinct psychographics characteristics and consumption behaviors. </li> <li>These preferences and profiles could be leveraged to inform new regulatory and market-based interventions regarding the sale and consumption of shark fins, and incentivize responsible fisheries and lab-cultured innovation for delivering conservation and sustainability goals. </li> <li>In addition, message framing around health benefits, shark endangerment and counterfeiting could reinforce existing beliefs amongst consumers in Singapore and drive behavioral shifts to ensure that market demand remains within the limits of sustainable supply. </li> </ol> <p>This dataset includes all the responses collected from the online discrete choice experiment which was implemented by a market survey company, as well as the goodness-of-fit chi-square analyses. These data were also used to plot the figures in the manuscript and the Supplemental Information. Password for excel sheet titled 'Final CEOE data' is 35433. On the use of a consumer-grade 360-degree camera as a radiometer for scientific applications: calibration dataset
<p>Studying the geometric distribution of the light field in terms of absolute radiometry required expensive and complex instruments. New types of compact 360-degree cameras have recently appeared on the consumer technology market. Some of these allow users to access raw imagery, offering sensor-level data that can be directly exploited for absolute light quantification. This paves the way for easy-to-use, inexpensive and accessible radiance cameras that can be operated in a wide range of natural environments. </p> <p>This dataset presents raw format images captured with the camera Insta360 ONE for its calibration and characterization. These experiments include geometric calibration, relative illumination evaluation, spectral response determination, absolute spectral radiance calibration, as well as linearity and dark frame analysis. In addition, we are providing data from a calibration validation experiment based on co-located measurements of the sky's downward radiance using a 360-degree calibrated camera and a scientific radiometer: the Compact Optical Profiling System (C-OPS, Biospherical Instruments Inc.).</p> <p>This repository contains raw files as taken by the camera's imaging sensor. In most cases, no data processing has been carried out. The entire data set is contained in a .zip file which includes the following sub-folders (in alphabetical order):</p> <ul> <li><strong>absolute-radiance</strong>: data (.dng, .tsv , .hdf5) acquired for <em>absolute spectral radiance</em> calibration</li> <li><strong>darkframe: </strong>DNG raw images taken for <em>dark frame</em> analysis</li> <li><strong>geometric: </strong>DNG images used for the <em>geometric calibration</em></li> <li><strong>immersion-factor: </strong>DNG images for the calculation of the immersion factor</li> <li><strong>linearity:</strong> DNG images for <em>linearity</em> assessment (gain and exposure time)</li> <li><strong>relative-illumination: </strong>DNG images for <em>roll-off (relative illumination) </em>characterization</li> <li><strong>relative-spectral-response: </strong>data (.asc, .dng) taken for relative spectral response characterization</li> <li><strong>verification&validation: </strong>time series data (.tsv, .dng) of the calibration validation experiment </li> </ul> <p>Each folder contains a <strong>README </strong>file explaining the additional subfolders and their files. As you may notice, some of the subfolders are named "lensclose" or "lensfar". They refers to the data acquired with the fish-eye optic assembly that is closer or farther from the top of the 360-degree camera respectively. Some calibrations were performed both in water and in air (geometric calibration, relative-illumination). In that regard, the images were placed in folders refering to "air" and "water". The routines (coded in python) for the data processing can be found in the following <a href="https://github.com/RaphaelLarouche/radiance_camera_insta360/tree/master_v01">Github repository</a> (master_v01) or the <a href="../records/4660994">Zenodo stored version</a>. The useful scripts are located in the <em>calibration</em> directory, and the<strong> README</strong> for each folder points to the revelant code for analysis of the files they contain. For additional information, all the methodologies are described in the <a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2305.07103">arXiv preprint</a>. </p>
Bilingual Dataset of Multinational Brand Posts and Consumer Replies from Platform X (Turkish and English)
<div> <div> <div> <div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div> <p>This dataset consists of posts and consumer replies from a curated selection of Fortune 500 companies from 2021 that actively maintained Platform X accounts in both English and Turkish. The sample includes 33 multinational brands spanning various industries: fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), fast food, technology, automotive, apparel, retail, finance, and logistics.</p> <p>All Platform X messages posted by these brands, along with corresponding consumer responses, were collected over a five-year period, from June 2016 to June 2021. The dataset initially contained a total of 8,101,034 English and 735,459 Turkish messages. Among these, the English dataset includes 2,708,874 brand posts and 5,392,160 consumer replies, while the Turkish dataset comprises 245,422 brand posts and 490,037 consumer replies.</p> <p>All files are in GZIP compressed parquet format.</p> </div>

EU Insights study on consumers and dietary sugars (Dataset)
<p>In 2017, EFSA received a mandate for a scientific opinion on the Tolerable Upper Intake Level of dietary sugars following a request by five national competent authorities (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden) on EFSA’s Advisory Forum.</p> <p>Social research was required to examine the views of the general public through a consumer survey, and the perspectives of relevant professional categories through qualitative interviews. Through these methods EFSA’s intention was to collect evidence on: i) public attitudes towards dietary sugars; ii) perceptions of the related risks of the dietary intake of sugars; iii) the most trusted and frequently used information sources for learning about sugars and other nutrition-related topics; and iv) other factors that influence food choice and eating behaviour. The results were intended for use by EFSA and its national competent authority partners in the EU Member States, Norway and Iceland.</p> <p>The survey was conducted among 7,469 citizens (aged between 18 and 76) across all EU27 member states plus Norway and Iceland. Data collection ran between 14<sup>th</sup> October 2020 and 11<sup>th</sup> November 2020. In most countries, at least 250 questionnaires were completed, except for the smaller countries Cyprus, Iceland, Malta, and Luxembourg, where the target was 150 due to scarcity of sample. This ensures a 95% confidence interval of roughly 8 percentage points. These sample sizes provide robust results and ensure that responses are representative in each of the countries to be surveyed.</p> <p>The sample was nationally representative with respect to age, gender and socio-economic grouping. Other demographic information collected was level of education and employment status. Respondents were also asked if they were parents so that comparisons could be made about the knowledge and opinions of parents compared to non-parents.</p> <p> </p>

Fig. 1. Wasp feeding arenas constructed from plastic snap caps (length 5 cm, diameter 3 cm). Each snap cap held a single wasp (Polistes dominula), which had exclusive access to a pear ester feeding solution. The solution was administered via a 77.86 microliter glass capillary tube (length 75 mm, inner distance 1.1-1.2 mm) heated over a flame and bent into a j-shape. The glass capillary tube was held in place by a firm cotton plug stopper with a slit cut into one side.
Growth, nutrient uptake, blood metabolites and bone properties in broilers consuming feed with mineral-enriched whole black soldier fly larvae
<p>Recycling critical minerals like phosphorus is essential for future circular agriculture. This study explored adding mineral-enriched black soldier fly larvae (BSFL), grown on substrates with sewage sludge recyclates (SSR), to broiler feed to reintroduce minerals from restricted waste streams into the nutrient cycle. Results showed that including 15% mineral-enriched BSFL in broiler diets for 42 days had no adverse effects on growth, nutrient intake, or bone condition, and maintained acceptable levels of heavy metals.</p>
