To monitor soil chemistry in the mangrove sites SRS4, SRS5, SRS6, and SRS7, and TS/Ph6b, TS/Ph7b and TS/Ph8, porewater concentrations of sulfide, PO4, NH4, NO2 and NO3 have been analyzed. Monthly water balance data for southern Taylor Slough Watershed (FCE LTER) from January 2001 to December 2011

The following abstract is from Sandoval (2013). The purpose of this research was to investigate the water balance, flushing time, and water chemistry of Taylor Slough; one of the main natural waterways of the coastal Everglades, during its early stages of restoration. Watershed flushing times were estimated as the surface water volume divided by the total water outputs. Both the water balance and water residence times were calculated on monthly from 2001 – 2011. Flushing times varied between 3 and 78 days, with the highest values occurring in December and the lowest in May. Flushing times were negatively correlated with evapotranspiration (ET), but were longer when surface water volume exceeded ET and shorter when ET exceeded water volume.

FCE LTER Taylor Slough/Panhandle-7 Site Scrub Red Mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) Leaf Gas Exchange Data, Florida, USA from January-December 2019

Rates of leaf gas exchange were measured monthly during the 2019 calendar year in a scrub Red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle (L.) L.) forest site (TS/Ph-7) near the mouth of Taylor River in southeastern Florida Everglades. Sampling of green mature leaves was designed to target scrub mangrove tree branches growing on slightly higher elevation mangrove island centers versus permanently inundated island edge habitats. Concurrent measurements of water depth and surface and porewater salinity were collected at each of the mangrove island habitats, with the research objective of assessing the effect of physicochemical variables on rates of leaf gas exchange (i.e., assimilation and stomatal conductance). Leaf gas exchange data were collected using the Li-6800 portable photosynthesis system (Li-COR, Lincoln, NE). Additional data on leaf functional traits and nutrient concentrations and environmental data from the site are included. Data are presented in five datasets (.csv).

Major Ion Concentrations in Surface Water Collected from Taylor Slough, Everglades National Park (FCE LTER), Florida, USA, December 2003 – December 2015

This package includes data of concentrations of sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, chloride, and sulfate in surface water samples collected from Florida Coastal Everglades Long Term Ecological Research (FCE-LTER) Program sites in Taylor Slough. These sites are TS/Ph1a (2003-2013), TS/Ph2 (2003-2012), and TS/Ph3 (2004-2015). Analyzed samples include composite samples, rainfall samples, and grab samples. Composite samples represent water collected over the course of 3 days by autosamplers programmed to draw 250 mL every 18 hours. Rainfall samples represent water collected by the autosamplers when a threshold of = 2.5 cm of rain per hour is passed. A 500 mL sample is collected 30 minutes after meeting the threshold. Composite and rainfall samples are retrieved every 3-4 weeks and returned to the Florida International University (FIU) Modesto A. Maidique campus. A grab sample is collected at each site during these visits. Cation and anion analysis were completed using ion chromatography on a Dionex DX-120. Sample preparation and analysis for major ions were completed in the Hydrogeology laboratory at FIU. This dataset is completed.

December 2002 surface water bacterial productivity at ten Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER sampling sites

Surface water samples were collected during low tide survays near ten Georgia Coastal Ecosystem LTER sampling sites in December, 2002. The incorporation of tritiated leucine in unfiltered samples during one hour incubations was measured using a standard microcentrifuge method to estimate bacterial productivity in each sample. This study was part of the GCE-LTER hydrographic monitoring program, and will be repeated quarterly.

December 2002 surface water phytoplankton productivity for 10 Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER sampling sites

Water samples were collected by Niskin bottle or by hand from just beneath the surface during low tide surveys at or near 10 GCE-LTER sampling sites in December 2002. The incorporation of radiolabelled bicarbonate in response to varying levels of illumination was measured using a photosynthetron apparatus. Photosynthesis-irradiance (P-I) curves constructed from these measurements will be used in conjunction with algal biomass and PAR versus depth measurements to estimate instantaneous gross primary production in the water at each GCE sampling site. This study was part of the GCE-LTER hydrographic monitoring program, and will be repeated quarterly.

December 2002 surface water bacterial abundance at ten Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER sampling sites

Surface water samples were collected during low tide surveys near ten Georgia Coastal Ecosystem LTER sampling sites in December, 2002. Unfiltered subsamples were immediately preserved with buffered formalin and refrigerated for transport to the laboratory. The abundance of bacteria in each sample was determined using an epifluorescence microscope by counting DAPI-stained cells retained on a 0.2µm polycarbonate filter. This study was part of the GCE-LTER hydrographic monitoring program, and will be repeated quarterly.

December 2002 surface water dissolved organic carbon concentrations at ten Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER sampling sites

Water samples were collected by Niskin bottle from just beneath the surface during tidal surveys at ten GCE-LTER sampling sites in December, 2002. Water samples were immediately filtered through ashed Whatman GF/F filters and three replicate samples were acidified, refrigerated and transported to the laboratory for analysis. Concentrations of dissolved organic carbon were measured in each sample by high temperature combustion and chromatographic analysis using a Shimadzu TOC analyzer. This study was part of the GCE-LTER hydrographic monitoring program, and will be repeated quarterly.
