Data from: Effects of species diversity on fine root productivity increase with stand development and associated mechanisms in a boreal forest
There is a growing interest in understanding the relationship between diversity and below-ground productivity due to the critical contribution of below-ground systems to overall terrestrial productivity. Yet, the temporal (seasonal and developmental) changes in diversity effects on below-ground productivity and their underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We hypothesized that (i) diversity effects on fine root productivity increase with stand development, and (ii) increased diversity effects associated with stand development result from augmented horizontal soil space utilization, increased forest floor depth for rooting, enhanced effects in nutrient-poor soil layers and/or foraging towards high nutrient availability. We investigated the effects of tree species diversity on fine root productivity by sampling 18 stands dominated by single species and their mixtures in post-fire boreal forests of two stand ages (8 and 34 years following stand-replacing fire). Species evenness was significantly higher in species mixtures than in single-species-dominated stands at both age classes, while species richness did not differ across stand types and age classes. We found that the annual fine root production was higher in mixtures than the mean of single-species-dominated stands in both stand ages, with a significantly higher magnitude of effects in the 34-year-old than 8-year-old stands. Mixtures had higher horizontal soil volume filling than single-species-dominated stands with a more pronounced increase in the 34-year-old than 8-year-old stands. Compared with the 8-year-old stands, the 34-year-old stands had increased forest floor depth and greater overyielding with soil depth, and their fine root productivity was more responsive to the vertical variation in soil phosphorus concentrations among soil layers. Synthesis. Our results provide evidence for increasing positive diversity effects on fine root productivity with stand development in heterogeneous natural forests. Moreover, our results indicate that the increased positive diversity effects with stand development was the result of multiple mechanisms, including higher horizontal soil volume filling, a thicker forest floor layer for rooting, a higher magnitude of complementarity in nutrient-poor deep soil layers and stronger nutrient foraging towards soil layers with high nutrient concentrations in older than younger stands.

Impact of water resources development on connectivity and primary productivity across a tropical river floodplain
<p>1. Floodplain wetlands provide an important subsidy for riverine food webs as sites of high algal production. However, this subsidy depends on the degree of landscape connectivity during flood pulses, which provides the opportunity for movement of higher order consumers between rivers and floodplains to access these productive habitats. Changes in floodplain inundation extent and duration, due to variable wet season flows or water resources development (WRD), can impact landscape connectivity and ultimately the magnitude of the food web subsidy.</p> <p>2. We explored landscape connectivity using graph theory and derived four new metrics to measure how different flow scenarios can affect connectivity and algal production. We considered a historic scenario with the present level of water resource development in our study area, the Mitchell River, and a WRD scenario with the inclusion of three new dams in the catchment. We generated 240 unique daily spatial graphs, using surface water inundation maps across 40-day flood events to compare a dry year (2006), an average flow year (2001), and a wet year (2009) with and without a WRD scenario.</p> <p>3. Drier years and WRD scenario resulted in floodplain fragmentation, potentially constraining the movement of higher order consumers. Changes in connectivity due to WRD resulted in predicted reductions of up to 26% of algal production on the floodplain that was otherwise connected to the main river channels.</p> <p>4. Synthesis and applications. The approach developed in this study provides new metrics to identify how changes in floodplain surface water extent due to water resource development and climatic variation may impact ecosystem function such as connectivity that facilitates access of higher order consumers to primary production in floodplain wetlands. With a direct link to river flow alteration, these metrics can inform catchment planning and management to ensure that the conservation of floodplain ecosystem functions is adequately considered in water resource management decisions.</p>
Changes in the direction of the diversity-productivity relationship over fifteen years of stand development in a planted temperate forest
<p>Experiments manipulating diversity in both forests and grasslands have often observed a positive diversity-productivity relationship (DPR) which tends to strengthen during plant community development. This pattern is generally attributed to an increase in niche complementarity or facilitation. Most analyses do not examine species dominance and density, which also change over time. Moreover, how neighbourhood scale interactions among tree species affect the DPR is not well understood.</p> <p>We analysed growth and mortality data from the Simplex experiment, a part of the BIOTREE tree diversity experiment. Simplex consists of 36 plots each planted with four common and commercially important tree species to create a gradient of tree species evenness at two tree densities (6667 and 3556 trees ha<sup>-1</sup>). We test whether: i) the effect of evenness on total aboveground biomass productivity increase with stand development (year), ii) the effect of evenness on productivity is stronger in dense plots; iii) intra-specific competition from neighbours negatively affect the growth of dominant species more strongly compared to co-dominant species, and whether this negative effect is stronger in denser plots.</p> <p>The direction of DPR was initially negative because the fast-growing long-lived pioneer Douglas fir (<em>Pseudotsuga menziesii</em> (Mirb.) Franco) dominated. However, with time, shade tolerant Norway spruce (<em>Picea abies </em>(L.) Karst.) and European beech (<em>Fagus sylvatica </em>L.) increased in abundance (by biomass), and the relationship between evenness and biomass increment changed from negative to positive in high-density plots. Neighbourhood analyses revealed that for Douglas fir and Norway spruce, conspecifics reduced individual growth rates across density levels and years.</p> <p>Synthesis: We observed a shift in the diversity-productivity relationship over 15 years in our experiment. Over time, increasing intraspecific competition limited the increment of the abundant Douglas fir in uneven plots, and a persistent increase in the abundance (by biomass) of shade tolerant Norway spruce and European beech in even plots led to a higher community biomass increment, which led to a positive DPR. Emergence of a positive DPR in temperate forest plantations requires significant time and is importantly promoted by diversity at the neighbourhood scale (intimate mixtures) as well as higher density planting.</p>

Development of medicinal beer production technology / Gyógysör gyártástechnológiai kidolgozása
<p>A projekt összetett folyamatot fed le. A kezdeti elméleti kidolgozást követően a fél-üzemi megvalósítás, majd az üzemi léptékre emelés egymástól jól elkülönülő fázisairól beszélhetünk, tehát több cél és több eredmény is született. <br>Az elméleti rész és a fél-üzemi rész sikeresen, a megfogalmazott céloknak megfelelő eredménnyel záródott. <br>Az üzemi léptékre emelés a projekt zárás pillanatában nem érte el a célzott eredményt, hiszen a magas hozzáadott értékű Kismama gyógy-tápsört, mint piackész terméket nem sikerült előállítanunk. Ugyanis a mintaként szolgáló 1960-80 években a Kőbányai sörgyár által előállított Nektár Gyógy-tápsör (mint kismamáknak szánt tejserkentő és energizáló magas ásványianyag és vitamintartalmú ital) is tartalmazott alkoholt, amit az akkori szabályok engedélyeztek is, de mi a jelenlegi tudományos ismereteknek és az érvényben lévő jövedéki szabályozásnak megfelelően az alkoholmentes funkcionális sör előállítását céloztuk. </p> <p>A szakmai összefoglaló 6. pontjában a két szakértő, kutató-fejlesztő munkatárs az alábbi következtetés, javaslatot fogalmazta meg az üzemi próbafőzéseket követően:<br>’A nektársör gyártási technológiáját sikerült adaptálni az üzemi körülmények közé. Az elvégzett tesztfőzések egyértelmű válaszokat adtak az üzem és ezzel együtt a benne lévő technológia erősségeire, illetve esetleges hiányosságaira. Egy termék léptéknövelése üzemi körülmények közé egy szisztematikusan felépített feladatsorozatot igényel, amelynek vannak egyértelműen sikeres részei és vannak olyanok, amelyeket a sok munka ellenére még finomítani kell, hogy a kialakított termék az elképzelt minőségben és reprodukálhatóan gyártható legyen. <br>A főzőházi folyamatok részletes dokumentálása alátámasztja, hogy olyan alapreceptet sikerült összeállítani, amely megfelel egy nektársör elvárásainak. Az erjesztés folyamatát sikerült úgy optimálni, hogy szigorú technológiai fegyelem mellett, valamint a sörkezelés (szűrés, pasztőrözés) és fejtés rendelkezésre állása mellett alkoholszegény nektársör előállítható. A piaci trendek igényei viszont egy alkoholmentes nektársör előállítását teszik szükségessé, amely üzemszerű gyártásához további optimálások szükségesek az erjesztési oldalon. Mindenképpen szükséges a hőrétegződés kialakulásának eliminálása a hidegerjesztési szakaszban, ugyanis a hidegerjesztés kezdetén a minimális széndioxid termelődés miatt nincs meg a megfelelő körforgás (önkeveredés) a tartályban. Továbbá szükséges az erjedő sörből az élesztő elvételének pontos idejét meghatározni, amely lépés történhet a rendelkezésre álló szűrési technikával. Továbbá javasoljuk az alkoholtartalom alakulásának egzakt, gyors nyomon követéséhez egy alkoholmérésre alkalmas berendezés beszerzését.’</p> <p>A projekt szakmai összefoglaló jelentéséből kiolvasható következtetések alapján, a termékkel érdemes a jövőben tovább foglalkozni, hiszen a cél elérhető, de ahhoz a technológia további fejlesztése szükséges. Az alkohol mérésére szolgáló berendezés (előzetes felmérés alapján 12- 15.000.000.- Ft), míg a hőrétegződés kiküszöbölésére szolgáló berendezés további tervezői egyeztetést igényel. A szükséges fejlesztést a társaság az anyagi helyzetének, a piaci viszonyok helyreállása után tervezett formában kívánja végrehajtani. A jelenlegi Covid’19 által okozott globális – piaci, életviteli, stb. – nehézségek normalizálódásának időpontja és módja nem tervezhető, következményei kiszámíthatatlanok, ezért a szükséges beruházásokról a társaság később tud dönteni.</p> <p> A megszerzett tapasztalatok bizonyítják, hogy a know-how működőképes (hiszen az egyetemi fél-üzemi kísérletek alatt el lehetett érni a >0,5 m/m % alkoholtartalmat, ezért a jövőben a feltárt hiányosságok javítása után folytatnunk kell a megkezdett munkát. Az elkészült termékek bevezetését megelőző tesztelést, kóstoltatást, palackozási, kiszerelési kísérleteket, tárolási próbákat el tudtuk végezni, ami szintén pozitívum, hiszen így megszereztük azt a tapasztalatot, amivel a majdani gyárthatóság garantált. </p>

Process development and analyses for the co-production of 2-methyltetrahydrofuran and 1,4-pentanediol from lignocellulosic biomass
<p>The development of technologies for utilizing biomass has attracted attention because biomass can be produced sustainably worldwide. Biomass-derived 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (MTHF), which is a promising alternative to gasoline, has great market potential and a growing demand. However, in conventional biomass conversion processes, the minimum selling price (MSP) of biochemicals is not economically acceptable. Co-production of biochemicals can increase the economics of biomass utilization. Herein, we developed a process for coproducing MTHF and 1,4-pentanediol (1,4-PDO) from lignocellulosic biomass. After biomass fractionation, cellulose and hemicellulose were converted to levulinic acid (LA), and lignin was used for heat and electricity generation. LA was then converted to γ-valerolactone (GVL). As a platform material for co-production, GVL was converted into MTHF and 1,4-PDO in each subsystem. The split ratio of GVL was controlled to efficiently produce MTHF and 1,4-PDO according to market conditions. Additionally, we performed a techno-economic and life-cycle assessment (TEA and LCA, respectively) for the developed process. The MSP of MTHF was calculated based on the TEA results, and the environmental impacts were quantitatively calculated based on the LCA results. We performed heat integration using pinch analysis and then reduced the energy requirement of the proposed process. The key cost drivers and environmental factors of the proposed process were identified via sensitivity analyses. Consequently, during the processing of 2,000 ton/day of corn stover (raw material of lignocellulose), the MSP of MTHF was calculated as $2.64/GGE (gasoline equivalent), and representative environmental impacts such as climate change and fossil depletion were calculated as -0.296 kg CO2 eq and -0.056 kg oil eq, respectively. <a name="_Hlk131691308"></a>As a result, we can increase the economics of commercial production of MTHF and 1,4-PDO with environmental sustainability. The proposed process can serve as a potential solution to the growing demand for the need for more sustainable biomass utilization.</p>
