Ethylene glycol assisted 3D floral evolution of BiFeO3-based nanostructures with effective magneto-electric response

<p>Controlled growth of nanostructures plays a vital role in tuning the physical and chemical properties of functional materials for advanced energy and memory storage devices. Herein, we synthesized hierarchical micro-sized flowers, built by the self-assembly of highly crystalline, 2-dimensional nanoplates of Co and Ni doped BiFeO3, using a simple ethylene glycol mediated solvothermal method. Pure BiFeO3 attained scattered one-dimensional nanorods-type morphology having diameter nearly 60 nm. Co-doping of Co and Ni at Fe-site in BiFeO3 does not destabilize the morphology; rather it generates 3-dimensinal floral patterns of self-assembled nanoplates. Unsaturated polarization loops obtained for BiFeO3 confirmed the leakage behavior of these rhombohedrally distorted cubic perovskites. These loops were then utilized to determine the energy density of the BiFeO3 perovskites. Enhanced ferromagnetic behavior with high coercivity and remanence was observed for these nanoplates. A detailed discussion about the origin of ferromagnetic behavior based on Goodenough-Kanamori's rule is also a part of this paper. Impedance spectroscopy revealed a true Warburg capacitive behavior of the synthesized nanoplates. High magneto-electric coefficient of 27 mV/cm.Oe at a bias field of -0.2 Oe was observed which confirmed the existence of magneto-electric coupling in these nanoplates.</p>

Data from: Pd/MCM-41 catalyst for acetylene hydrogenation to ethylene

This study aims to produce ethylene using the calcium carbide route, acetylene from calcium carbide and then selective hydrogenation of the high-concentration acetylene to ethylene. A series of catalysts with different supports, such as Al2O3, SiO2 and MCM-41, were prepared using the ethylene glycol reduction method and their catalytic properties for high-concentration acetylene hydrogenation of calcium carbide to ethylene were studied by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction and thermogravimetry, among others. The results show that the small particle size and uniform dispersion of Pd particles in the Pd/MCM-41 catalyst produced the highest ethylene yield of 62.09%. Then the conditions for the basic reaction, such as reaction temperature and space velocity, were optimized using MCM-41 as a support. The yield of ethylene after condition optimization was as high as 82.87%, while the loading of Pd was 0.1.

Data from: Small RNAs in rat sperm are a predictive and sensitive biomarker of exposure to the testicular toxicant ethylene glycol monomethyl ether.

Testicular histology and semen parameters are considered the gold standards when determining male reproductive toxicity. Ethylene glycol monomethyl ether (EGME) is a testicular toxicant with well-described effects on histopathology and sperm parameters. To compare the predictivity and sensitivity of molecular biomarkers of testicular toxicity to the traditional endpoints, small RNAs in the sperm were analyzed by next generation RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq). Adult rats were exposed to 0, 50, 60, or 75 mg/kg EGME by oral gavage for 5 consecutive days. Testis histology, epididymal sperm motility and sperm small RNAs, including microRNAs (miRNAs), mRNA fragments, piwi-associated RNAs (piRNAs), and tRNA fragments (tRFs), were analyzed 5 weeks after cessation of exposure. Testicular histology showed a significant dose-dependent increase in retained spermatid heads (RSH), while sperm motility declined with increasing dose. RNA-seq of sperm small RNAs was used to identify significant dose-dependent changes in percent mRNA fragments (of total reads), percent miRNAs (of total reads), average tRF length, average piRNA length, and piRNA and tRF length-distributions. Discriminant analysis showed relatively low predictivity of treatment based on RSH or motility compared to the average read length of all aligned RNAs. Benchmark dose (BMD) modeling resulted in a BMD of 62 mg/kg using RSH, whereas average read length of all aligned RNAs resulted in a BMD of 47 mg/kg. These results showed that sperm small RNAs are sensitive and predictive biomarkers of EGME-induced male reproductive toxicity.

Data from: The effect of ethylene glycol on pore arrangement of anodic aluminum oxide prepared by hard anodization

The influence of ethylene glycol (EG) addition on pore self-ordering process in anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membranes prepared by hard anodization (HA) was investigated. It was illustrated that EG has a substantial effect on the pore arrangement of AAO, which revealed that a smaller pore size can be obtained as EG concentration reaching 20 wt% in aqueous electrolyte. The number of estimated defects of AAO increase significantly with additive EG concentration at 50 wt%. Excellent ordering pore was realized when the samples were anodized in the 30 wt%-EG-containing aqueous electrolyte.electrolyte. The number of estimated defects of AAO increases significantly upon the added EG concentration reaching 50wt%. Excellent ordering pore was achieved when the samples were anodized in a 30wt%-EG-containing aqueous electrolyte.

Data from: BNPd single-atom catalysts for selective hydrogenation of acetylene to ethylene: a density functional theory study

The mechanisms of selective hydrogenation of acetylene to ethylene on B11N12Pd single-atom catalyst (SAC) was investigated through the density functional theory by using 6-31++G basis set. We studied the adsorption characteristics of H2 and C2H2, and simulated the reaction mechanism. We have discovered that H2 absolutely dissociative chemisorption on single atom Pd and formed the B11N12Pd(2H) dihydride complex and then proceed the hydrogenation reaction with C2H2. The hydrogenation reaction of acetylene onto the B11N12Pd complies with the Horiuti-Polanyi mechanism, and the energy barrier as low as 26.55 kcal mol-1. The low desorption energy of ethylene, high ethylene hydrogenation activation energy can ensure the B11N12Pd SAC has high selectivity. Meanwhile it also has a higher selectivity than many bimetallic alloy single-atom catalyst.
