Demographic census data for four perennial plants under experimental pollination treatments

These demographic data were collected to measure the effects of manipulated pollination treatments on the population dynamics of four iteroparous perennial plant species: Delphinium nuttallianum (Ranunculaceae), Hydrophyllum fendleri (Boraginaceae [Hydrophyllaceae]), Erigeron speciosus (Asteraceae), and Potentilla pulcherrima (Roseaceae). The pollination treatments consisted of Control corresponding to ambient pollination, Reduced for which 50% of open flowers on each individual were enclosed in mesh to exclude pollinators, Supplemented for which all receptive flowers were hand pollinated with outcross pollen, and Variable for which individuals received the Reduced treatment in ca. 50% of years. The full life cycle was characterized from at least four annual demographic censuses of tagged plants between 2017-2022, germination rates estimated in seed addition plots, and soil seed bank survival estimated from buried seed bags.

Air Quality Index (AQI) data from PurpleAir sensor at H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest LTER

This dataset contains hourly air quality and meteorological measurements collected from a PurpleAir sensor deployed at the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) site. The data includes four variables: timestamp (in Pacific Time), relative humidity (%), temperature (°C), and particulate matter concentrations (PM2.5 in µg/m³ using the CF=1 correction factor). The sensor provides continuous monitoring of local air quality conditions, with particular focus on fine particulate matter that can impact ecosystem health and visibility. Experimental treatments at each site included factorial nitrogenXphosphorus, greenhouse and shade house and were begun in 1985 (Sag site) or in 1988 (Toolik sites). Fluxes were measured on quadrats that were later sampled for biomass and leaf area.

Above ground plant and below ground stem biomass and their carbon and nitrogen content was measured in the Arctic LTER moist acidic tussock tundra experimental plots(MAT89). Treatments included control, nitrogen plus phosphorus amended plots for either 6 or 13 years and vole exclosure plots with or without amends of nitrogen and phosphorus. Note: The added Carbon and Nitrogen values were incorrectly added to the data sheet. A block of data was repeated for all treatments. In version 14 the values were corrected.

Air temperature and humidity, and soil temperature data from the Arctic LTER Moist Non-acidic Tussock Experimental plots (MNT97), Toolik Lake Field Station, Alaska, 1999-2025.

In 1999, a Campbell CR10x data logger was installed in block 2 of the Arctic LTER Toolik Moist Non-acidic Tussock Experimental plots(MNT97). The plots are located on a hillside near Toolik Lake (68 38' N, 149 36'W). Air temperature and relative humidity were measured at 3 meters (control), and inside the greenhouse, and fertilized greenhouse. Soil temperatures were measured with thermocouples placed in control, fertilized, greenhouse, and fertilized-greenhouse plots.

Late season thaw depth was measured in the Arctic Long Term Ecological Research (ARC LTER) experimental plots (1981 Moist Acidic Tussock, 1989 Moist Acidic Tussock, 2006 Low Fertilization Moist Acidic Tussock, 1989 Moist Non-acidic Tussock, 1989 Moist Non-acidic Non-tussock and 1989 Wet Sedge tundra) at Toolik Lake, Alaska using a steel thaw probe. Note: for 2017-2018 only 1989 Moist Non-Acidic Tussock Tundra and 2006 Low fertilization Moist Acidic Tussock Tundra were measured. For other sites it has become difficult to distinguish rocks from frozen soil with a steel thaw probe. Starting in 2023 weekly thaw depth measurements were made throughout the growing season in the 2006 Low fertilization Moist Acidic Tussock Tundra experiment.

Bonanza Creek LTER: Shrub, Seedling and Sapling Density from 1975 to Present in the Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest near Fairbanks, Alaska

This study is a survey of the density of tall shrubs, saplings, and seedlings at Bonanza Creek LTER Control Plots. Densities have been measured at some sites since 1975 while others began in the mid 1980's. In 2006 methodology was changed in attempt to better capture the spatial variability of shrub and tree species within the research sites. The current method, presented here, uses a 2 meter wide transect along two site boundaries covering 220m2. All seedlings, saplings, and tall shrubs >1m (regardless of species) are counted by species and size class along the transect. The previous method used 4m2 circular plots at 20 points on a 10mx10m grid within the control plot for an area of 80m2. The circular method measured all seedlings, saplings, and a certain set of "tall shrubs", regardless of height. The height requirement creates an issue when comparing the old and new methods for early successional stands. For Alnus and Salix this is likely only a problem in the FP0 sites as they are the only sites with a high density of shrubs shorter than 1m. Shrub community changes at these early successional sites should be analyzed using percent cover data. At the later successional sites most Alnus and Salix shrubs are greater than 1m so the transect method likely does not underrepresent density. Critical slowing down: vegetation height, cover and composition assess resilience of tidal fresh, brackish and salt marshes following experimental disturbance at twelve sites across the estuarine landscape

We investigated the relative recovery rates of vegetation cover, vegetation height and community composition over a period of >10 years after experimental disturbance in 12 tidal marshes (two oligohaline, three mesohaline and seven polyhaline sites) across the estuarine landscape on the coast of Georgia, USA. Vegetation was removed from three by three meter plots (four per site) with herbicide in 2006 followed by repeated clipping through 2009. Vegetation height, cover and composition was assessed in experimental and control plots (4 of each per site) from 2010 to 2020. The goal of the study was to assess how quickly the sites recovered from disturbance, how this varied in different types of marshes, and how results varied depending on whether recovery was assessed by vegetation height, cover or composition.

These data are monthly fluxes of solutes in stream water measured in watersheds of the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest and are a part of the Hubbard Brook Watershed Ecosystem Record (HBWatER), which is a long-term record of stream and precipitation chemistry and volume. The solute fluxes in stream water are calculated as the product of the volume of stream water and solute concentrations. There are nine gaged watersheds at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, some of which have been subjected to experimental manipulations. The calculation of fluxes is currently supervised by John Campbell (US Forest Service). The long-term stream water record is collected and maintained by the US Forest Service. The collection and management of the long-term stream and precipitation chemistry record was initiated in 1963 by Gene E. Likens, F. Herbert Bormann, Robert S. Pierce, and Noye M. Johnson. HBWatER is currently sustained by Tammy Wooster (Cary IES) and Jeff Merriam (USFS) and the dataset is curated and maintained by a team of researchers: Chris Solomon (Cary IES), Emma Rosi (Cary IES), Emily Bernhardt (Duke), Lindsey Rustad (USFS), John Campbell (USFS), Bill McDowell (UNH), Charley Driscoll (Syracuse U.), Mark Green (Case Western), and Scott Bailey (USFS). Current Financial Support for HBWatER is provided by NSF LTREB # 1907683 and the USDA Forest Service Northern Research Station. Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Daily Precipitation Rain Gage Measurements, 1956 - present

Precipitation has been measured at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest using rain gauges located in or around each watershed since 1956. Three types of rain gauges have been used: standard, mechanical weight recording, and electronic weight recording. Between 1956 and 2014, precipitation was measured weekly at standard gages located at 24 stations in or near gauged watersheds and at the headquarters building. Weight-recording gauges were located at 7 of the 24 stations and capture a continuous strip-chart record. Weekly totals were prorated using daily totals from the nearest recording gauges. Beginning in 2011, electronic weighing rain gauges were implemented to measure 15-minute precipitation. The number of precipitation stations was reduced to 10, when each station was fully converted to an electronic gauge for measuring 15-minute and daily precipitation beginning in 2015. These data were gathered at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in Woodstock, NH, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.
