EVIDENT H2020 – EVIDENT Serious Games Dataset
<p>The EVIDENT serious game explores consumer behaviour in response to a malfunctioning home appliance. Specifically, it examines how consumers approach decisions to repair or replace a broken home appliance and the impact of behavioural biases on these decisions. There are two key aims addressed within the EVIDENT serious game. 1) Determine the impact of socio-demographic factors, environmental literacy, and financial literacy on consumer willingness to pay for the repair of home appliances. 2) Determine the impact of information and education mediated through a serious game on consumer in-game and real-world repair/replace decision-making.</p> <p>The serious game itself is a life-simulation game in which users are tasked with maintaining their virtual home while ensuring their avatar remains comfortable (i.e. basic needs such as hunger, warmth and hygiene are met) while monitoring their financial and energy consumption. Within this game, users learn that an appliance has malfunctioned, and a repairperson is called. Users must then determine how best to proceed by entering a negotiation with the repairperson.</p> <p>The experiment consists of the following sections: 1) demographic information; 2) financial literacy; 3) environmental literacy; 4) serious game. The game receives as input the replies of the participant on the demographics information section to provide a personalized gameplay experience. Replies regarding participant's age ("What is your age?"), role ("Which of the following apply to you?"), income ("What is your household's annual income?"), gender ("Which character would you like to play with?") and family status ("How many people live in your home (including you) - Children") will be used to adjust players' avatar, starting amount of money, size of the house, age of the player and the negotiation process with the repair person.</p> <p>The negotiation process differs based on the participants' role ("Which of the following apply to you?"). In this question, the participant can choose one of the following replies: 1) I am a homeowner, 2) I am a tenant (i.e. I pay someone to rent my accommodation), 3) I am a landlord (i.e. I receive payment for accommodation from someone else). Participants who rent (2) or are landlords (3) will be assigned to an additional in-game scenario to explore the unique context in which their energy decisions are made. <p>This database is an addendum to the article "<strong>Privacy Perceptions in Digital Games: A Study with Information Technology (IT) Undergraduates</strong>" to provide information regarding the anonymously collected data.</p><p><strong>Abstract of the article</strong></p><p>This study explores the perceptions and practices of undergraduates in Information Technology (IT) regarding privacy issues in digital games. This topic becomes relevant in the current scenario where artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly integrated into digital games, providing an enhanced experience for players. However, this integration poses security and privacy challenges, the understanding of which is crucial for both players and developers.<br>The primary objective of this research is to comprehend the participants' perceptions and understandings of privacy in digital games. We employed a qualitative and quantitative methodology to address our research inquiries. Through an online form of data collection, we obtained 61 responses. Among the obtained information, we observed that 40\% of the students are interested in pursuing a career in game development, and 49.18% would consider this possibility. Noteworthy among the identified issues is the necessity for companies to devise more effective means of communicating their privacy policies to players/users, adapting the language to their target audience. Participants reported attacks related to online multiplayer games and expressed concerns about the security of personal data.</p>
The name of the game: Palaeoproteomics and radiocarbon dates further refine the presence and dispersal of caprines in Eastern and Southern Africa
<p><span>We report the first large-scale palaeoproteomics research on eastern and southern African zooarchaeological samples, thereby refining our understanding of early caprine (sheep and goat) pastoralism in Africa. Assessing caprine introductions is a complicated task because of their skeletal similarity to endemic wild bovid species and the sparse and fragmentary state of relevant archaeological remains. Palaeoproteomics has previously proved effective in clarifying species attributions in African zooarchaeological materials, but few comparative protein sequences of wild bovid species have been available. Using newly generated collagen type I sequences for wild species, as well as previously published sequences, we assess species attributions for elements originally identified as caprine or "unidentifiable bovid" from seventeen eastern and southern African sites that span seven millennia. We identified over 70% of the archaeological remains and the direct radiocarbon dating of domesticate specimens allows refinement of the chronology of caprine presence in both African regions. These results thus confirm earlier occurrences in eastern Africa and the systematic association of domesticated caprines with wild bovids at all archaeological sites. The combined biomolecular approach highlights repeatability and accuracy of the methods for conclusive contribution in species attribution of archaeological remains in dry African environments.</span></p>

Data from: Winter game crop plots for gamebirds retain hedgerow breeding songbirds in an improved grassland landscape
<p>The cause of recent population declines in some farmland / hedgerow breeding bird species in the UK is related to a lack of cover and food resources in winter. In improved grassland areas some of those declines have been particularly acute and some have been shown to be related to the availability of grass and weed seed in winter. The provision of seed-bearing crops as part of AES options has been shown to benefit some of these birds. Game crop plots sown on shooting estates for holding and driving gamebirds in autumn and winter have been shown to hold relatively high densities of farmland and wood-edge birds during the winter.</p> <p>We studied breeding songbirds in hedges in a primarily improved grassland area in the SW of England where there are some large shooting estates that sow relatively large game crop plots (1 - 5 ha) in the landscape. In this study we found that otherwise similar hedges in terms of size and density near to those winter game crop plots, had between 1.5 and 2 times as many breeding resident songbirds per unit length the following spring compared to hedges further away from game crop plots. This was despite game management in these plots being wound down during February and in many cases, the crops themselves being removed by mid-March. Hedges within approximately 350m from game crop plots had more breeding birds. We discuss possible mechanisms and suggest that some passerines preferentially establish breeding territories in hedges near to game crops in late winter. We suggest how to distribute game crop plots to maximise any benefit in an improved grassland landscape.</p>
